Rating: Summary: Gripping story, bad moral Review: The one thing that bothers me about this truly suspenseful story about two very likeable characters, is the rape. Clayton sexually abuses Whitney. There is no justification for that, whether his Daddy didn't love him or his dog died. Of course one still wants them to end up together, and I think the situation is dealt with best when Clayton has to beg her forgiveness across the crowded church. I don't think it's right that he should be allowed to be angry about her behaviour afterwards, even if she acts strange for the next five years it's nothing compared to what he did.I think this novel sends the wrong message about sexual behaviour, be it in the 19th or 21st century. Historical romances rarely have their protagonists acting as they would have at the time in the past, so why start with something so horrible?
Rating: Summary: NOT ONE OF MY FAVORITES Review: I have just finished reading Whitney My Love and it was not one of my favorite books. It was good but it just could not hold my interest. After reading some of the other reviews I agree and disagree with some of what was stated. I agree that Whitney thoroughly diserved the spanking Clayton gave her, she behaved like a spoiled child who needed to be spanked but I thought how he did it was not well written. Who in their right mind would lay yourself across a man's knee to be spanked! Also, he should not have used the riding crop. As to the rape scene or "almost" rape....that stinks! Rape, near rape or whatever is wrong! Then he treats her badly and she begs him to love her.....please? I have definitely read better books!
Rating: Summary: THE MOST AMAZING ROMANCE EVER! Review: I first read Whitney My Love in it's first published edition. I have had to re-buy this book several times because it gets so worn out. I am a big fan of Judith Mcnaught just because of this book. Whitney My Love was not only capitivating, but you lost yourself in it. Time seemed to stop and before you knew it, it was 2 O'clock in the morning and you had to get up and go to work in a few hours. This book is well worth it. The characters, the story line, everything. I have read a few reviews speaking about the spanky and rape scenes in the book. Ladies, you have to understand that in that day and age the men had control and the women where puppets. I however loved the reading about the "Elizabethan Era." Women with thier own mind, such as Whitney, were regarded to being wild and independent which was not the norm in that day. She stirred things up and made things happen. I will continue to re-read this book over and over again. I think this book is a GREAT read for anyone that loves a little history, passion, fire and a really unique story . This book is tremendous and I thank Mrs. McNaught for writing it. It is a treasure.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Infuriating... Review: Okay, first of all, I understand that this book is set in a time period where women didn't have much, if any, say regarding their own lives. But I truly think this book carried it too far. How could any sane woman fall in love with an egocentric male chauvinist who originally planned to make her his mistress, spanked her like a child, proceeded to rape her, then accused her of carrying another man's baby (after they were married!)? Conflict in romance novels is to be expected and keeps the story interesting. However, throughout most of this book, I found myself despising Clayton and hoping Whitney would marry ANYONE but him. The fact that she couldn't seem to resist him, and fell in love with him despite EVERYTHING he did, totally frustrated me. I'm not sure how I even finished it, but somehow I did. Unfortunately, I think I could have really enjoyed this book if it wasn't for the horrible way Clayton treated Whitney. I would only recommend this book if you enjoy reading about abusive relationships in which the male is a violent, chauvinist, control freak and the female is a weakling who is unable to stand up for herself and demand some respect.
Rating: Summary: Funny and Exiting Review: Whitney,My Love was a very entertaining read. How can a young girl get into so much trouble! She in the end finds out the true meaning of love not just infatuation.I recommend this book to anyone who likes reading about romance in England in the time of Lords and Ladies.
Rating: Summary: Whitney My Love Review: I have read hundreds of romance novels and this one is my favorite without a doubt. It captured my attention fom the beginning and kept it until the very last word on the very last page. I could not put the book down.! I think the most touching scene is after Clayton and Whitney have split and Clayton is so devastated that he breaks down crying to his brother. To see this very masculine and proud man in tears broke my heart. How many heroes do we see this side of? This is a must read. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: How Can You Not Love It? Review: Let me start off by saying that maybe, because I'm thirteen that I'm not wise of the world yet, and I can't understand why it bugs everyone. And yes, it is disturbing to have a rape scene mixed in with a romance. I do beleive that rape is wrong, but this was written in the time period of the eighteen hundreds, and it is only a book. But, rape aside, this is a wonderful book, well worth buying. Whitney is an outlandish teen who has a crush on the neighborhood dandy. When her mischeif gets out of hand, her father ships her off to Paris with her aunt and uncle to become more "refined". In Paris, Whitney blossoms and catches the eye of the Duke of Claymore. He deals with her father, pays his debts, and "buys" Whitney. When Whitney comes home and figures this out, she is outraged. What happens, I'm not saying. Let me say, though that this is a faboluos book full of delightful characters whom you grow to love by the end of the book.
Rating: Summary: wonderful Review: In my opinion, Whitney, My Love is one of the best romance novels ever. (The other is The Windflower). When I was reading WML, I was so captivated by it. I felt each of Whitney's and Clayton's heartache and finally joy. I even shed some tears (which has only happened one other time when I have read a novel). Each scence in WML is wonderful, but the most touching was when Whitney went to Clayton to ask forgiveness and finally told him that she loved him. I was so happy that they finally were together. And when WML ended, I was so disappointed. I wanted it to go on and on. I have read some of the other reviews and they spoke of Clayton's rough treatment of Whitney regarding the spanking and rape scences. The spanking I truly believe Whitney deserved, but the rape scence left some questions but each reader will have their own opinion. I feel that Clayton was remorseful and he does beg forgiveness, but that is up to each reader. I have read WML at least 7 times that I can recall and enjoyed them as much as I did the first time. I hope anyone who has not read it does because I feel they would not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Whitney, My Love Review: I thought this book was wonderful! I almost felt sorry for the neighbor, but not enough to let Whitney go back to him! If you liked this one, then you will really enjoy Judith McNaught's other Historical Romances. I hope she writes another one as quickly as possible!
Rating: Summary: It Doesn't Get Any Better... Review: This is, by far, one of the best books I have ever read. Ittouched my Heart and my Soul. No other book has ever had a moreimpact in my life than this one. This is the kind of love and romance that is missing today. About the spanking and the rape... I honestly feel that Clayton more than punished himself over that one. He certainly was not proud of it. Very, very good book, I must have read it over 20 times, (no lie) Out of all my friends and family who have read it, only one person said it was ok, everyone else simply LOVED it. Thank you, Judith, well written and a great pleasure to have read.
