Rating: Summary: A classic romance to treasure always. Review: Whitney, My Love is the best romance novel I have ever read. I read this years ago, and reread it so many times that I wore out the paperback copy. My husband bought me the hardcover addition which had a surprising new ending. Each of Judith McNaught's books are a treasure, and I always look forward to her latest work. But this one has always been my favorite.
Rating: Summary: A great read Review: Being an avid romance reader, I would rank Whitney, My Love on my top five list. This book gives the reader the full story--from early life until well past the usual marriage. Most historical romance books end right around the marriage, but this one extends beyond, so the reader can find out about 'happily ever after'. A perfect part of her trilogy (Kingdom of Dreams, Whitney, My Love, and Until You). A great, fulfilling read!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I have read this book so many times my first edition fell apart and I had to by the hardback version. I love Whitney and Clayton's story. Judith knows how to tell a story. I laughed, and cried. Always a sign of a great book. If you love Judith Mcnaught, you will without a doubt love this book.
Rating: Summary: no longer skeptical Review: When a friend of mine first introduced this book to me I was extremely skeptical. I mean, what's so great about a sappy romance/ bodice ripper? They're just lame right? I almost expected to see Fabio with some scantily clad woman on the cover. Little did I know that this book would actually contain parts that made my heart ache. Especially the part where they see each other at Elizabeth's wedding and he tells her "Miss Stone, I adore you." Sigh. It's a real page-turner...while we were studying for our midterms in the college library I kept stealing reads from W,ML!! Whitney's spunk and flair reminds me of Scarlett Mitchell's Gone With the Wind, one of my favorite heroines. If only everyone had their own Clayton (minus the sometimes-abuse), the world might just be a happier place.
Rating: Summary: I fell in love with Judith McNaught books! Review: This is the first Judith McNaught book I ever bought and I loved it so much, I searched far and wide until I had bought all her books. This, along with Almost Heaven and Paradise are some of my favorite romance novels ever! I re-read it every year.
Rating: Summary: Whitney, get out of there!! Review: I can't help but notice that this book seems to be rated very highly by McNaught fans, both in its own right and in comparison with her other books. For me, though, it's a non-starter. I can't rate Judith McNaught as a writer of Regencies and other English historicals: her work, in terms of plotting, characterisation and attention to accuracy, pales in comparison to Mary Balogh, Mary Jo Putney, Jo Beverley and others. In this book, I could never even begin to like Clayton, and I can't see why McNaught imagines him as a romantic hero. In other books, he would be the villain of the piece, from whom the hero would come and rescue the heroine. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with a book in which the aim is to rehabilitate the sometime-villainous anti-hero: Mary Jo Putney did this to very good effect in The Diabolical Baron/The Rake. However, the Duke of Claymore is by no means redeemed in my eyes by the end of the book. I simply cannot understand why anyone would have stayed with him willingly; but then, I didn't end up having much admiration for Whitney either. The most disturbing part of this book, as other reviewers have noted, was the rape scene. Frankly, I was shocked and appalled. I am not arguing that writers should not write about rape; but the context in which the rape happens, and the aftermath of the rape, make it all appear completely unforgiveable to me. This is a man who is continually violent to his wife, the rape aside. Are we expected to believe that he will change his ways? I can't accept that. Nor can I accept that a man who rapes his wife in that manner - regardless of the customs of the time, which dictated that a woman is the property of the man in her life (father or husband, or, when widowed, son) - can be viewed as a romantic hero. I can't recommend this book, and - considering my poor opinion of McNaught's Something Wonderful in addition - I will not be reading anything else by this writer.
Rating: Summary: The Best! Review: This is Judith McNaught's best book. Recommended to me by a friend several years ago and remains my favorite romance book. If someone can read this and finish with dry eyes they have a hard heart! I do not like the fact that Clayton rapes Whitney, but once you get past that, this is the romantic novel to read.
Rating: Summary: A real disappointment!! Review: Judith McNaught is one of my favorite authors. However, I do not recommend this book to anyone. What I don't understand is why there are so many people that love this book. The central character "Clayton" is a spoiled, selfish man. I didn't care for the relationship between the two central characters. Not to mention that Clayton rapes Whitney. Skip this book. Any of McNaught's other books are far superior to this one.
Rating: Summary: terrifically tender! Review: I'm a choosy romance reader who always try the newest McNaught, as she is one the most skilled writers on the market. This along with Almost Heaven is my favorite of hers. McNaught is tender without being sappy, witty, savvy, and erotic in all the right places. Unlike many novels, this one takes time to develop the characters and to show them growing before one another, creating ongoing and evolving tension between the lovers themselves as the key to the suspense. Whitney is headstrong and naive in love, only realizing a good thing when it's just out of her reach, while Clayton is the rogue who borders on the cruel rake but whose genuine desire for her atones for any behavior some oversensitive readers might find objectionable. In short, they are believable characters, which makes their coming together off and on all the more intriguing, exciting, and poignant. McNaught is especially good at drawing out minute and intense emotions from the readers as her lovers zigzag toward one another. She is genuinely funny in places and the dialogue is reminiscent of Restoration drama repartee--intelligent and literate readers will love this. One of my very few keepers!
Rating: Summary: Whitney My Love Review: BY FAR, THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ! THE DETAILING IS EXTRAORDINARY. THE CHARACTERS COME ALIVE IN YOUR MIND. I FOUND IT EXTREMELY HARD TO PUT DOWN. YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THE CHARACTERS FROM THE START AND FIND YOURSELF WISHING THE BOOK WOULD NEVER END! NOW, I AM IN SEARCH OF MORE BOOKS BY JUDITH MCNAUGHT. I JUST KNOW THEY WILL KEEP ME SPELLBOUND THE SAME AS THIS ONE DID.
