Summary: A realistic trial of faith amongst lovers and friends.
Review: "In That Camden Summer," by Lavyrle Spencer, Roberta Jewett has experienced the unfaithfulness of her husband. To rid herself of her past she moves back to her hometown of Camden, Maine. This small town in which Roberta grew up now sees her as a disgrace. A divorce in a small town is seen as a criminal offense and Roberta is the offender. Through many hardships suffered through the actions of her mother as well as the town's citizens, Roberta decides to rebuild her life for her girls and herself. Love is reintroduced to her unexpectedly and her life falls back into place as she learns to have faith in the opposite sex.

In this book irony is the most significant literary element. Roberta is criticized frequently for the divorce she had encountered only months earlier. In the latter part of the book, readers see how ironic it is for her to be criticized while other citizens of the town have the same, if not worse, faults. It also ironic how badly the townspeople treat Roberta after everything she does for others. Throughout the story she is seen as a strong female who puts her life and family back together after a terrible experience. Her fellow citizens see her as a failure creating another ironic instance.

Summary: LaVyrle has done it again!
Review: "The Endearment" was my favorite LaVyrle book until I read "That Camden Summer". I thoroughly enjoyed this book and admired the lead character's tenacity, independence, strength and outrage at injustice. As always, LaVyrle spins a tale that keeps her readers turning pages; wanting to read every last word, then feeling sorry the book has to end. This one certainly fits that category.

Summary: A Summer to Remember
Review: All I can say is what a story, the plot is well conceived and it stands out as one of the best books I have read in a long time. Each character comes to life from the pages and they take form right before your eyes, it's as if you can see them in a picture. The individuality of them makes it a diverse field. The story as a whole brings to mind the tials of life (especially for a woman) in the 1920's. The power of it makes it very hard to put down and it's kind of sad when it has to end and the dreamworld is over...

Summary: A REALLY great book!
Review: Being a LaVyrle Spencer fan, I have to say this is my favorite book out of all her books. I have never loved and hated so many characters, all in one book. Roberta was a strong(sometimes too strong) woman, and Gabe was a man that any woman would be lucky to have. I totally loved his character...such a great guy. I found this book to be totally romantic, and this book made me realize just how lucky, we as women are today. I had a hard time putting this book down, and whenever I got one free moment, I would run for this book.

Summary: Should receive higher than a 10!!!
Review: I chose Camden Summer for a free reading book for my High School Junior english class and to tell the truth I chose by looking at the cover. I was surprised at how excellent it was written. LaVyrle Spencer did a phenomanol job!!! I could never and didn't want to put it down. The book went to Florida with me on a band trip because I didn't want to put it down. The details were great. You could see everything that was happening. The detail of Roberta's house, Gabriels bedroom with Caroline's things and many other events. I would defiantly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading or even if they hate to read. I am only 17 and really loved it!!

Summary: That Campy Summer
Review: I did not like this book at all. Basically this book was about a woman named Roberta Jewett who is scorned for having gotten a divorce. And of course the reader is supposed to feel sorry for her, when I found it utterly impossible to even care. Then there is the wonderful Gabe, who is hired to paint her house or something (been so long since I read this). And their romance seemed so cliche that it is a wonder that house painters, etc. don't have a bad reputation. The situations were silly, sometimes sickening. Not recommended.

Summary: WOW!!! What a story.
Review: I had back surgery Oct 1998 and needed something to read while laying around afterwards. I went to the local Safeway and found this book, not reading the preview on the back I liked it from the start just because of the cover. What I had no idea was I would not put it down except to eat and use the facilies. Thanks L. Spencer for the wonderful heroin, Roberta Jewett, you brought to life in That Camden Summer. :) You really know how to make your readers feel part of the story. I could almost smell the roses in Gabes backyard.

Summary: Lose yourself in this book
Review: I happened to get this book from a friend when I was on vacation, and I was so glad I did. Of the six books I read, this one was the best read. It went too fast and I didn't want it to end! (Which is a good thing to me!) I liked the descriptions of the East Coast, and the turn of the century times. There were great values of family and sticking together along with the not-so-normal love story. The strong character of Roberta and the obstacles that she overcame was very uplifting. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
