Rating: Summary: this is no bridget jones Review: i bought this book b/c it got such high reviews from other readers on amazon, but i couldn't even get through it. i would definitely not recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Is chick-lit legit? Review: Tracey Spadolini is an overweight cigarette-smoking 24- year old from upper upstate New York (so far upstate it's the Midwest) in a lousy job in Manhattan trying to get her selfish, narcissistic actor boy friend to make a commitment. I suppose by now we should stop grumbling about similarities to Bridget Jones (and, after all, there are plenty more avatars and predecessors) and accept that chick-lit is an established genre, or category, or whatever, and that some writers choose to write in it, just as they might choose to write mysteries or science fiction. It is a lowly category (as far as the TLS and NYRB crowd are concerned) just one notch above romance and glitz. This contains some wonderful passages like "I focus on my beverage, attempting to stir the sweetened foam into the darker liquid below. It refuses to harmonize, clinging in wispy clumps to the wooden stirrer like the cottony clumps of maely bugs on my sickly philodendron at home." Trying-to-lose-weight jokes have become a cliche (remember "Sheena Levine is Dead and Living in New York") s but there's a twist here - she succeeeds. The descriptions of nine hour bus rides and of her home town ring absolutely true and are often poignant and hilarious. The plot is simple but compelling. She almost had me wanting to get into the book and scream "dump the guy." It was a pleasant surprise to pick up a book by an author unknown to me(do I sound patronizing? good) in a humble literary sub-species, and find such great entertainment.
Rating: Summary: Honestly, loved it! Review: First of all, I have to say Thank you to Wendy for finally getting the rent situation in New York to a realistic amount in your book. On Friends I can handle the apartmenst they live in, becasue they never actually say how little they are paying, but I am sick of seeing movies and reading books where these poor struggling people afford these great places! That in itself deserves 5 stars in my book! Ths story was a little predictable, but I still loved it. I felt her pain when she didn't see things coming. I loved the ending! and I even wanted more! This book is very funny! I can't wait for the sequel!
Rating: Summary: Quick weekend read. Review: Good story of picking oneself up after a major dumping and starting new.
Rating: Summary: Fast Read Review: I liked the book, but I felt it lacked much of an ending. I thought there should have been another chapter that explained more about how she changed, got more confidence, etc..
Rating: Summary: Cute story. Review: A quick one day read, totally Bridget Jones Diaryesque but I love BJD. Althought, I enjoyed this book I wish it had ended differently.
Rating: Summary: Slightly Stupid Review: I started reading this book hoping the main character would actually progress. However, despite ensuing tribulations and experiences she doesn't seem to accept the lessons life gives her and stubbornly clings to her obsession. At some point, I just felt like slapping her. I believe she took a couple of positive steps in the right direction but never really got the point. Jemima J is way better.
Rating: Summary: Loved It! Review: This was a really great book, I couldn't put iy down! If you like girly reads, then this book is a must!
Rating: Summary: Slightly interesting Review: Tracey Spadolini is spending the summer in New York City without her boyfriend of three years, Will. He's going off to do summer stock in upstate New York and she's not sure what to do with herself. Before he leaves, she senses that something is just not right in the relationship - heck, it's never been quite right. But Tracey is sure that if she embarks on a self-improvement campaign over the summer - lose weight, save money, read some classic literature - Will will return from summer stock and fall in love all over again with the brand new Tracey. This was my first Red Dress Ink book and I will be reading more. Though not "classic" chick lit, per se, it was a good read and I think Ms. Markham (Wendy Corsi Staub using a pen name) has an excellent writing style.
Rating: Summary: Bridget Jonesesque Chick Lit 4 1/2 Stars! Very Funny! Review: Too many authors lately are taking the plunge into writing 'chick lit' and coming up short since the hysterical book 'The Bridget Jones Diary' hit the screen. Not many have captured that witty, funny and touching dialog that made Bridget so popular, but alas, this one has. Full of funny scenes enough to make you smirk and outright laugh with enough of a balance in it to make you ponder her problems seriously and hope for the best. The 'perfect' chick lit to me is a funny yet touching account of a woman's life while she is in the middle of some sort of crossroads. Throw in a guy that she doesn't think is interested in her and another that she swoons over but lacks any potential and leave open for a happy or satisfying ending and I am a happy camper. 'Slightly Single' more than meets this mark... ~A horrible heat wave has struck Manhattan and Tracey Spadolini, a 24-year-old New York transplant is trying to get through the summer without her 'slightly significant other'. By that she means, her 'boyfriend' of 3 long years, but not officially. Will is doing summer stock upstate and will return in September and they can pick up where they left off, or will he? See, the problem is, Will, a struggling actor, with looks to kill and a body to drool over doesn't seem to see things the same way Tracey does. Vowing to change her life while he is gone and therefore entice Will and keep him hooked, Tracey tackles her un-airconditioned East Village apartment(barely East Village...closer to Jersey in fact), her deadend job, her nasty boss and her weight. With some help from her best friends(all very funny secondary characters)and a very attentive guy she practically ignores, she tackles becoming a new woman...all she has to do now is find out why Will hasn't called.
