Summary: Stunning contemporary work
Review: I just finished Between Lovers, Eric Jerome Dickey, which I bought on an impulse. Have never even heard of the writer until I got the book. I was just looking for a novel of contemporary theme. Though published since June of 2001, if I saw it then I probably would not have bought it because I was reading historical romance then.
The writing is fast paced, is a story of three upwardly mobile people, all experts in their chosen professions, but interlocked in a seemingly unsolvable modern love triangle. The dialogue, tongue-in-cheek, is passionate about their beliefs and ideals that none of them did not want to compromise. In fact, it was this reluctance to relent on these ideals that drove the story. To describe a love scene in a 10-page chapter takes a master writer and Eric Jerome Dickey crafted passionate, sensuous love scenes with expert touch that makes a reader wonders: can love making between a couple can be this good?
The contemporary icons mentioned were not overwhelming either, carefully sprinkled are strategic mention of laptops, cell phones, modern writers, a couple of actors and music from jazz to hip-hop to reggae. This is a must read book for all. While it is now available in mass-market paperback I opted for the hardcover and loved every page.

Summary: Dangling Deliciously
Review: The sex is hot enough to melt leather. The tension is sharp enough to draw blood. And I haven't even started talking about the best part of the book yet, the real heart of the book, the reason why you feel compelled to read on and read on. I'm talking about the romance between the unnamed narrator and Ayanna, not Nicole. What the narrator feels for Nicole is typical of romance novels: she is his soulmate, his perfect love, blah blah blah. We tolerate their obligatory love scene as another par for the course.

What he feels for Nicole's lesbian lover Ayanna, however, whom he claims to hate and whom he tries to destroy, is much more interesting. She is his rival, true, but O How Your heart did pray for them to make love, dear reader. Tell the truth. You were begging for it as EJD dangled it deliciously in front of your face. Will they or won't they? Isn't that the best way to prove who is more suited for Nicole? Go for it, unnamed narrator. Go for yours!

In fact, from the first time they got together in the bar and had that nasty little fight scene, you began to feel it. If these two people didn't hate each other so much, they would make a great couple. Such passion is the real substance of a romance! You kept flipping pages. You wanted her as much as the unnamed narrator did. And the way that EJD finally consummated THAT relationship (I'm not telling what it is--go buy the book)--the way he finally consummated that relationship is what makes this book so satisfying and so much better than most of the "typical" books we are reading today. You are the man, EJD!

Summary: I Approve
Review: I have read all of EJD's books and have regarded the lot of them, with the exception of Milk in My Coffee, as light entertainment. His stories are always amusing; his writing is sufficient to the task, but not exceptional. This book, a tale of three grown up preacher's children in a lesbian/straight love triangle, strives for something greater and achieves it. There is artistry here and passion for the subject matter and affection for each of the principle characters. The book is sensuous and lusty. In short, it is hot without being a "dirty" book. Now I am a fan. I am re-reading his earlier books to see if I misjudged him, and I am on my out the door to buy his latest, Thieves Paradise.

Summary: Taking Chances
Review: Between Lovers is a story that one either loves or hates; definitely no gray areas with Dickey's last novel. In Between Lovers, Dickey introduces us to three individuals intertwined in a troublesome threesome. No Name wants Nicole. Ayanna wants Nicole. And Nicole wants BOTH of them. Between Lovers is told primarily from the standpoint of the male narrator, who the reader quickly realizes has no name, so we simply refer to him as "narrator, no name, or him." His presence and personality is so strong and felt so immensely throughout the book that quite honestly he needs No Name because without him there wouldn't be a story.

Between Lovers greatest strength is its character development of primary as well as secondary characters. These are characters that you feel and as such you laugh with them, cry with them, shout at them, scream at them, talk about them and just plain want to slap them sometimes...okay maybe a lot of times.

Between Lovers might easily be Dickey's most complex and ambitious storyline to date. When I initially read the first few chapters I wasn't drawn into the story. In fact, I set the book aside, for a couple of weeks, before I picked it up again. I'm glad I gave it a second chance. The more engrossed I became with the storyline the more compelling and alive the story became for me. The tension and competitiveness of the storyline was so realistic and believable that I felt as thought I was right there living in the midst of the characters.

Between Lovers probably isn't for everyone. But for those who like a refreshing reading or a change of pace from Eric Jerome Dickey then this is a book to add to your reading list.

Summary: The True Message and Worthiness of "Between Lovers"
Review: After reading "Between Lovers," by Eric Jerome Dickey, I came to the conclusion that it is one of the most entertaining, daring and intensifying novels that I have ever read. Although the novel is fictional and depicted obvious fantasy in several scenes, Dickey was still able to expose his audience to a part of life's reality through the relationship between the characters who were directly affected and involved in a triangle of love. While using this approach, Dickey forced the reader to visualize within his or her own encircled world and identify with real people that may be in the same type of situation as the character, Nicole. In the past, more so than now, people would frown and look down upon lesbian relationships and the idea of three people being involved in an intimate and sexual relationship. Dickey portrayed flexibility, an open-mind, and judgmental qualities when he skillfully and cleverly addressed the controversial issue of two women being in love, or a woman synergistically being in love with a man and another woman. He also correlates it with an opinionated view from a religious aspect, causing judgement to be cast upon another, giving the reader something more to think about and ultimately leading them to a profound and internal psychological decision. So in reality, the plots presented in "Between Lovers," also served as a euphemism that the author used to take an indirect stance on the acceptance of homosexual relationships from a moral and personal point view. Radiating surreptitiously and in a subdued way, the author brought his creativity to a new level by being able to reach his readership through his ability to hold their attention and keep them entertained through the anticipation of what would or would not happen next.
Adjoined with real issues and the exercising of his ability to be comprehensive and expressive at the same time, the author conceived an excellent creation when introduced and gifted "Between Lovers," to his readership.

Summary: I commend you for accepting the challenge.
Review: You are an awesome writer, Eric, and I am your biggest fan.

I found this particular book, like the rest, to be well-written. EJD has a talent for crafting words into artistic paintings. I admit, the subject matter was difficult for me to grasp, but in the end I appreciated it because of its authenticity. Somewhere, this is someone's story, and I think that you did an excellent job in sharing another couple's agony.

This stuff happens everyday, and EJD is to be commended for accepting the challenge of writing about it. I know he has been criticized highly for it.

I am a real fan EJD. I support it all.

Summary: ... REVIEWS
Review: Between Lovers is the newest novel by the author of the popular bestsellers: Milk in My Coffee and Cheaters. Dickey's novel tells the tale of a successful romance novelist who in the midst of a book signing tour travels to Oakland, CA to spend time with his beautiful, long time love interest Nicole. Narrated by the love struck writer, Between Lovers details Nicole's inner struggle between a man who's feelings for her have withstood many hardships surrounding their relationship and Ayanna, an attractive, successful attorney that has captured Nicole's heart through her sensual nature. The writer, aware of his part in this competition deals with his pain through his writing thus making his novels anonymous autobiographies of his life.

Author Eric Dickey has a true talent for vividly recreating intimate scenes between his characters. Whether the illustration is anger, sadness or a sexual nature Dickey can provide a realistic enough account to where the reader feels like they are in the room during the interaction. It is unfortunate however that I felt no attachment to any of these characters because by jumping right into the love episodes, the author failed to develop the players in the story. Dickey did make a valiant effort to get readers more intimately involved in a character life by stirring up major drama in Nicole's life in the latter part of the book but by this time I did not care enough about her to need to see the conflict resolved. Without a whole lot of direction, the storyline seemed to drag on without a plausible end in sight.

I have great respect for Eric Jerome Dickey as a writer and I have enjoyed many of his previous novels but I felt that Between Lovers did not have the strength behind it's story to keep me enthusiastically turning those pages.

Summary: A Journey into the Unknown
Review: Eric Jerome Dickey's novel, "Between Lovers," was an eye-opener. It tells the story of a man, who is never named, who is desperate to regain the love of his ex-fiance. This part isn't too disturbing until the reader finds that the narrator's old flame is in the arms of another woman. The roller coaster ride begins here as a man and a woman go into an unrestrained battle to win over the woman of their dreams.

I have to say that I find the novel to be interesting because it goes into a world that I know nothing about and it explores the taboo subjects of homosexuality and bisexuality that most modern critics are still too scared to touch. Even though the main plot of the story is controversial, the fact that this novel is a love story cannot be disregarded. It may not be the kind of love that most readers are used to seeing in fiction or everyday life for that matter but the elements are there. And really, what kind of a person hates a love story?

For the most part, though, I do recommend this book to readers who are mature, not only in age but also in life, and to those who are willing to be shocked. I would also recommend that readers set some "me-time" aside because once you pick up the novel, you will not want to put it down.
