Rating: Summary: Superb and worth buying it Review: As always, Suzanne's books will entertain you with wonderful characters, humor, and interesting storyline.
Rating: Summary: Lack of spontaneity and appealing characters Review: Could it be her previous book A Matter of Scandal which was a luminous comic riot that set my expectations for THE RAKE to be higher? One thing though is certain though: Suzanne Enoch's latest romance lacks the spontaneity and the appealing characters of the former - and the plot runs predictably to muffle the laughs and wits. Lady Georgiana Halley is tenacious to teach "a lesson of love" to the notorious rake of the ton, Viscount Dare. You see - Georgiana was cheated of her virginity by Tristan six years ago when she became the pawn in his wager. Feeling bruised and humiliated when she witnessed Tristan ensnaring a new victim, Amelia Johns, she decides to collaborate with Amelia for a payback while promising Amelia that Tristan will propose to her in return. She moves in with Tristan's aunts and finds herself reserving feelings for the reformed rake especially for his love towards his brothers. Tristan sees past the belligerent Geogiana to find a woman still in love with him. When their love blossoms, they face their own doubts. Could it be a shenanigan by Tristan to ensnare her fortunes to ease his dire straits? Could Georgiana be fuelled only by revenge? Suzanne Enoch moves the comedy of love with her scintillating pace and snappy dialogues. However the plot runs on ridiculous grounds and much of the story revolves too much on revenge plotting, monetary gains and mistrust that spoils the romance. The revenge is juvenile and foolish. There is a lack of sensibility and maturity in Georgiana and Tristan - such as the recklessness of their tryst towars the end. The Rake begins well to start off the laughters in a comedy of manners and romance, but the contrived plot mutes both characters and the wits.
Rating: Summary: A Delightful, easy read with likeable characters. Review: Enough has been written about the story line so I only want to add that the initial chapter planning the "lessons" to be taught to the men reminded me of an old goergette heyer book (I never liked her style) and I nearly stopped reading it. But Once you meet Lord Dare and get into it, it's hard to put down. It tends to get better as it goes on. The dialogue was delightfully witty and the secondary characters (at least Dare's brothers) were just as interesting. I thought the heroines "girlfriends" were a bit blahsy but their impact on the story was minimal anyway. Am anxious to read the sequel about Robert. good job, SE..
Rating: Summary: entertaining escapist tale Review: Georgina Halley, Lucinda Barrett, and Evelyn Ruddick discuss the arrogance of men with money. They agree to teach a particular lord how to care for a woman. At the soiree hosted by her aunt, Georgina selects Tristan Carroway when she observes him apparently mistreating innocent heiress Amelia Johns. Six years ago Tristan broke Georgina's heart and her virginity in a wager. Now she plans to make him fall in love with her before destroying him so that he crawls back on his knees to Amelia. Georgina persuades Tristan's elderly aunts to allow her to move in as their companion. This stuns him to see her blithely sitting at the dinner table. Separately Georgina and Tristan think back to that dumb bet of his that cost both of them everything. He regrets what he did to her, but now he needs money to keep the estate and his family afloat. Georgina is wealthy, but he must stick with Amelia who is also rich. However, both begin teaching the other a lesson in love, but an abundance of pride stands in the way of a future together. An entertaining escapist tale based on a weak premise turns into a fun frolic because of the strong eccentric cast. Besides the delightful battling lead couple, his family provides amusing depth to THE RAKE, but Amelia subtracts from the triangle, as she is just a nasty work. Fans of Regency romances will enjoy Suzanne Enoch's first With This Ring tale and want to read the upcoming stories starring Lucinda and Evelyn. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Lets be honest shall we?... Review: How many people buy a ROMANCE book for anything other than the main characters and to read about their road to true love? I disagree with some of the negative reviews written about this book below. This is my first Suzanne Enoch book and I found it to be romantic, funny and page turning. Georgianna and Tristan (Lord Dare)have know each other for years. When she was a young debutante, a scandalous wager got out of hand, devastating Georgianna and causing the pair to become (adversaries). After six years had passed, Georgianna decides that Tristan needs to be taught a lesson because he is pursuing a young heiress (due to financial troubles) named Amelia and does not want the same thing to happen to another young lady as it did to her. Georgianna sets out to lure Tristan into her scheme by making him fall in love with her and then dumping him as she felt he did to her years ago. The question is, who is seducing who? This was a good book, maybe a bit far fetched at times, but good none the less. I would recommend it to anyone that loves to read romantic comedies.
Rating: Summary: Hysterical and yummy! Review: I am so sad that other people found this book lacking. I laughed, I almost cried, and I was thoroughly entertained. I love Suzanne Enoch's books. You never know what to expect and The Rake was a perfect example of this. Lord Dare is very yummy and once he decides that he wants Lady Georgianna for his own, nothing will stop him, even an ill-placed wager, the fact that the lady in question thinks she hates him, or a debutante set on being the next Lady Dare. Georgianna and Tristan's encounters were witty and fast-paced and exactly what you want to read during the summer or even a cold winter evening. I only wish I could find a man as enchanted with me as Tristan is with Georgianna. Suzanne Enoch's books are the best and I will continue to read them over and over.
Rating: Summary: Distasteful... Review: I have to agree with the negative reviews I've read. After finishing this story, I was left with a distasteful feeling. I know that marrying for money was and continues to be a fact of life, especially in 19th century England. However, that does not make it any more appealing (especially if it's the man who's desperate for money). In fact, it made Dare extremely UNappealing. The very fact that he is a man, and therefore more able to generate some type of money making scheme made it worse. Women who found themselves in that state in those times did not have nearly as many options available to them as men. Practically all a decent woman could do then was become a paid companion or governess. However, men had more options available for them. It seemed yukky, that Dare would so willingly marry someone for money without even trying to come up with something/anything to improve his situation (to at least try). On a different note, I found it disturbing that Dare and Georgie were groping each other while in the same room with two other people who were actively engaged in sex. That was gross, completely inappropriate, and unnecessary. If Dare had been able to control himself (at least till they made it out of the house) the entire "scandal" at the end could have been completely avoided. Why was it necessary for that to happen, except to raise an ick factor for me? I don't understand how he could unbutton her top and grope her, while at the same time knowing they needed to leave immediately in order to make good escape. It was irresponsible. My goodness, they were in the same room with two conniving blackmailing people, and listening to them engage in sexual intercourse turned them on? So much so that they are unbuttoning and groping one another? What is romantic about that? It was disgusting. Also, I felt too much time was spent on the foolish "revenge" plot which came to nothing. The entire story had an almost juvenile/immature feel to it, and again I have to say that it was distasteful. I didn't like this story.
Rating: Summary: Loved it -- Funny, Entertaining - An enjoyable read Review: I liked this -- and can't wait to read about the other 2 girls. Having read all of Suzanne Enoch's books, this was another wonderful and enjoyable story.
Rating: Summary: Actually 4+ Stars Review: I loved the commedy in this book. It is nice to see a strong woman character actually controlling the situation without having to give in. Georgina is out to teach Lord Dare a lesson. While she gave her heart to him years ago he did not return the favor, in fact she was part of a bet. Though the extent of the bet was not made public to the Ton. But, Georgie is not one to shy away from a challenge. She sets her mind on something and even if she will be unhappy in the end she sticks to her plan. I loved this character. She had strength, and a lot of humor. She used her mind to put herself in the same house as the rakish Lord Dare, but not to put her reputation further in jeopardy she also managed to charm all of her "victims" brothers without even trying. You have to love chapter 13! If you like historical romances I recommend this one!
Rating: Summary: This is the 1st book I have read by Suzanne Enoch Review: I really enjoyed it. I found it easy to get into and I liked the characters. But then again as one reviewer said if you like Patricia Cabot you would like this and I do like her. I can't wait to read the other 2 stories that should follow for Lucinda and Evelyn.
