Rating: Summary: Sweet Valley High! Review: I LOVE Julia Quinn, and I think she's a talented, funny writer. Having said that, I don't think I should FORCE myself to finish this book. If I didn't know the quality writing Julia is capable of, maybe I would like this... not sure. The beginning reminded me of all those Sweet Valley High books I read as a (very!) young girls (and if you read them too, you know just what I'm talking about) where the 2 main characters (twins Elizabeth and Jessica) were described in the same way, and the first chapter was the same in all 100+ books. Ms. Quinn actually includes a LOT from the prior her earlier books- it feels more like filler than background or perspective. And I have NO idea why Colin is falling in love with Penelope. It just doesn't work. But I love Julia, and I'll be back for the next book! I guess that means I should finish this one (groan- homework!)
Rating: Summary: Mixed feelings Review: After reading the first 4 pages, I was sure this was the best Julia Quinn ever - warm, witty and engaging. By the halfway point, however, I was disappointed. Although I had my suspicions about the identity of Lady Whistledown, when the revelation came, it didn't seem logical. There were too many unresolved red herrings. I did, however, enjoy the very end, and there were some fun characters throughout the book. Not a keeper, but an enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: worth the wait Review: A worthy continuation of the Bridgerton series. Offer left me rather cold, with its obvious Cinderella story, but Romancing has the gentle wit I rely on Julia Quinn to provide.
Rating: Summary: I Laughed on the First Page! Review: I buy her books sight unseen. This may not be the BEST Bridgerton story but it is still Great. I laughed on the first page and did not stop. Penelope and Colin's story is great. They both have known each other for ages and Penelope has loved him since she was 16. Now she is 28 and he is 33 and things just come together and they see each other how they really are. This was a fun story and the characters were great. You get to see all kinds of old friend and family and see how they have been changing and growing. You do not want to miss this one. And oh you get to find out who Whistledown is. I won't tell you who since that is half the fun of reading the story!
Rating: Summary: Very nice Review: This is a good read. Which take the reader on a nice romp through Regency England. I do have to say it was rather sappy when Colin kept asking Penelope when she changed and started to look so different. He just was not getting why he was finding her so attractive... He understands at the end with a nice segway into the next Bridgerton novel. Can't wait!
Rating: Summary: Lady W revealed! Review: Of all Ms Quinn's Bridgerton novels, this latest is my favorite... so far. (Although all the others are a very, very, very close 2nd! *grin*) I adored the Prologue: the descriptive way Penelope falls in love is perfect! And the book gets better from there, especially Colin's righteous anger when asking her Mother for Penelope's hand in marriage! I wanted so badly to scream, Yes! With characters like Colin and Penelope, the book can't help but be memorable. Colin is such a "nice" hero and one couldn't have picked a more deserving heroine than Penelope. I was so glad to see her return so strongly in her own book after being the ever-present, yet seldom appreciated, wall-flower/secondary character in previous Bridgerton novels. And the fact that Colin, as nice as he is, has to eat his own words in the end. Well, who could ask for more? Oh yeah, there is that mysterious sharp-tongued, yet witty, gossip known as Lady Whistledown who's been frankly cutting - although honest - toward Penelope all these years. Well, she's unveiled in this book, which makes it even more worthwhile. (So, not to spoil the surprise, if this is your 1st introduction to the Bridgertons... I'd recommend reading the other books in the series first. Just in case, the order is: The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, An Offer From A Gentleman, and then Romancing Mr Bridgerton) They keep getting better and better, which makes me anxious to see how Eloise's story will unfold!
Rating: Summary: The Best of the Bridgerton Series Review: Excellent...This book is the best of the series.
Rating: Summary: I'm a sucker for Quinn Review: I don't read to many of the romance genre books anymore, but this book has me inspired to read more if they are like this one. I appreciated how the character wasn't a complete idiot who thought to herself that a man would truly complete her. She knew who she was, had made a name for herself, had great friends and a witty repartee. Give me a saucy gal who can speak her mind against any man, and I'll be reading your books!!
Rating: Summary: I disagree...this is one of her best. Review: I have to disagree with the reviewers that said this was a disappointment. This story was unique in that Penelope wasn't a raving beauty, she was a spinster and had never been courted by a man before Colin came along. And Colin hadn't been very impressed with her years back. He was the catch of the ton and considering her circumstances, he shouldn't have given her a second glance. But he did. And that's what makes it such a beautiful love story. Everything he does and says to her will make you fall in love with him. He was the perfect hero for her and their story was one of my favorites. I've read every Julia Quinn book and they were all good. This one, however, is one of my favorites. But don't start it unless you have lots of time because you won't want to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Nothing spectacular... Review: This romance (Bk 4 in the Bridgerton series) tells us who Lady Whistledown is. I had the doubtful privilege of realizing that I had guessed correctly in Bk 1 "The Duke and I". The hero Colin Bridgerton is the third son, and he is paired up with a wallflower, and an old friend of his sisters (no spoilers here). The couple were perfectly pleasant together, and herein lies the problem. I really did not feel any sparks between them, unlike the real emotions between Simon and Daphne (Bk 1) or Anthony and Kate (Bk 2). Colin was this "lost" hero, the superfluous man, the idle aristocrat trying to find his way in life. He has spent so much of his life running away that he almost fails to notice his true match. The problem was that as cute as the little extracts from Lady Whistledown's colum were, too much was made of the need to keep her identity a secret. This part of the plot dragged on, and on and on. There seemed to be very little else to the story, beside this and the efforts of Colin to discover what he wanted for the rest of his life. I think I prefer a romance with a little more action, or more serious angst. Rating = 3.5 (B-) Breakdown = romance 3.4 (B-); writing 3.8 (B); characterization 3.4 (B-); plot development 3.2 (C+)
