Rating: Summary: Amazing... Review: I LOVE LYNN KURLAND!!! I just got this book today and I finished it in a marathon 3.5 hour sitting. It was amazing and for Kurland fans, it will be well worth the expense.Patrick MacLeod is 35 and at a point in his life where love means something to him, but women don't. His normal, cheerful demeanor was shattered after his first wife, Lisa, dies and so does the baby she was carrying. Since then, he's been hounded by his former father-in-law, Gideon (who hates him, to put it mildly), and his brother Jamie (from A Dance Through Time) and cousin Ian (from Love Came Just in Time/Veils of Time). Jamie and Ian are worried that he may never fall in love again or get married. They are even more worried that Patrick may never act normally again. Madelyn Phillips has other issues. Her life's dream was to visit Scotland and now she has all the time in the world. Of course, that's because her toad of an ex-fiancée has the nerve to get her sacked from her job and pretty much kills her employment chances in her hometown. Then he has the nerve to show up in Scotland, steal her reservations at the B&B and her luggage, have her credit cards frozen, and steal her violin (the final straw). Bentley's motive, of course, is to make Madelyn reliant on him for the whole of her vacation so he can worm his way back into her heart and carry out the rest of his carefully thought-out plan. Madelyn, of course, spends much of her time ducking him and trying to get some control back over her life while trying to convince him to leave. Patrick and Madelyn finally meet at Culloden, where Madelyn pays her respects to a stone marker she finds at her feet, one marked "MacLeod." Patrick is touched by this and eventually figures out where she's staying (with Roddy from A Dance Through Time). He begins showing Madelyn the best of Scotland, both to get her away from Bentley (the ex-fiancée) and to spend more time with her. Eventually, Madelyn ends up back in time trying to avoid Bentley. In fact, she ends up in the 14th century, at the Fergusson keep (remember, MacLeods and Fergussons are sworn enemies) and only Patrick can come save her. In attempting to save her, Patrick has to let go of some of his demons in order to get the time travel gate to work properly. HE ends up at the MacLeod Keep with Malcolm, Angus, and Grudach (from My Heart Stood Still) and for those who've read "My Heart Stood Still," you know what that means. Eventually he concocts a daring escape for Madelyn and takes her back to the future, where an even more disturbing enemy awaits them..... Whew! I cannot begin to say how much I love this book. This is certainly better than some of her more recent attempts (From This Moment On was good but could've been better) and brings you back into the fold of the MacLeods. Almost every character from the previous MacLeod books show up (Jamie, Elizabeth, Jane, Ian, Alex, Ambrose) and the rest are mentioned frequently. The family tree in the back informs the loyal that a new book is on the way (Victoria MacKinnon and Connor MacDougal!), but what I really want to know is this: When are we going to return to the de Piagets?!?!?!?
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: I love the way Lynn writes. I have been waiting for the story of Patrick to show up and it finally has and I loved it! You cannot help but love the family that she writes about. Alex is my favorite, but Patrick is not so bad...If you haven't read Lynn's other books check them out, you will not be disappointed. Happy reading!
Rating: Summary: Another favorite!!!! Review: I think I have found my another book to add to my all-time-favorite book list. I absolutely LOVED this book!!! I liked the fact that it just sucked me into the storyline and kept me there until I was sad to see the story end. If you are looking for a romance book that has explicit sexual text, this one isn't for you. If you are someone who is looking for a good heart-tugging romance, this is a good read. It was alittle hard to believe all the bad luck the heroine experienced but I found myself day-dreaming about Patrick quite a bit. :)
Rating: Summary: Applause, Applause...Pt.II Review: I would like to add as PS to the review I just wrote about this book: Kurland proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that an excellent romance novel can be written with no sex scenes. It is done by good dialogue, some description, well developed characters a good story, humor, the development of a love relationship...and no sex! It takes time and work but it can be done. Thank-you Lynn!
Rating: Summary: A delightful story Review: Law partner Bentley Taylor III ended his engagement to attorney Madelyn Phillips in order to marry someone else. He also left her with no job and no place to live. Still, Madelyn always dreamed of leaving the United States to tour the Highlands of Scotland so she goes on her honeymoon sans her husband. Bentley follows her and makes life miserable by using his contacts to cut off her credit and steals her clothing. Still Madelyn refuses to have anything to do with her former suitor. Instead she is attracted to Patrick Macleod, who hates life ever since he lost his cuckolding wife and child six years ago. Everyone except perhaps his brother and sister-in-law thinks he killed his spouse. Especially blaming him is his in-laws, who want him dead. In this environs, he does not want to fall in love, but he cannot resist Madelyn. Fans of contemporary romances starring two delightful lead characters and containing a touch of the supernatural and a degree of mystery will enjoy A GARDEN IN THE RAIN. The story line is fast-paced, but the behavior of Bentley does not become clear until late in the book, a major turn-off as he is a key player who makes no sense until deep into what is otherwise a delightful story. Still the cast is strong and the different sub-genre elements blend nicely together so that the audience receives a fabulous novel. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Time Travel and Ghosties Too! Review: Madelyn Phillips was pretty much a walking disaster. She had been engaged then dumped by her fiancé, Bentley Douglas Taylor III, a couple of weeks before the wedding; this same fiancé who then arranged, quite vindictively, to have her fired from her job. With not much else left other than a mountain of debt from student loans and canceled un-refundable wedding deposits, she managed to keep her pre-paid ticket and reservations for her life-long dreamed for, and planned honeymoon tour of Scotland. Unfortunately, her totally obnoxious ex-fiance, has a change of heart (did I say change of heart - he had no heart) but was determined to win her back through whatever devious means he could - such as, canceling her credit cards, reservations, stealing her luggage, passport, etc. in effect, trying his best to leave her no alternative other than to crawl back to him for aid. Patrick MacLeod, was haunted by a past he couldn't have controlled yet blamed himself for. After the death of his wife and child, he wanted no part of love ever again and was not ready to run to the aid of the Yank who couldn't drive and had tangled herself up with such an obnoxious character like Bentley. Unfortunately, the past would rear it's head back again and he felt the connection that would find himself inexplicably pulled in to come to Madelyn's aid. He would be uneasy in discovering the measure of peace and hope just being in her presence would bring. There was just something that emanated from this woman that set him into wanting to hope but would he have the courage to open his heart again, and possibly risk her life to the vengeance his ex-father-in-law was intent on delivering? I've read all of Kurland's books and she does write a splendid tale as she continues the saga of the MacLeod clan. While it is always a treat to re-visit other members from the previous tales of the MacLeod clan, it is even more fun to discover new ones! The stories are always great entertainment and yet I sensed a bit of a change here in the romance aspect. If you are looking for the lusty, squirm in your seat seductions in the previous books, you will not find it here. There are virtually no big seductions, or sexual encounters between the two central protagonists. Rather, we are treated to two adults getting to know one another as Patrick initially plays the good samaritan. While both feel the power of their attraction to each other, neither acts on it. I also had trouble with Patrick's laid back attitude and almost passive way he had in his treatment of the obnoxious Bentley Douglas Taylor III. Knowing that he was a transplanted medieval highlander, it just didn't seem in character that he would be so passive in allowing Bentley to continue his torment of Madelyn. In spite of the non-sexual content, the paranormal aspects are fabulous and I truly did enjoy this latest addition to the MacLeod saga.
Rating: Summary: Kurland does it again! Review: Mmmm! Delightful! Wonderful! Yummy! Lynn Kurland Is my favorite romance author and she did not let me down this time either. This is in the same tradition of romance and humor that she laces all her books with.Once again she has a normal girl we can relate to, who is in the middle of her anything that could go wrong has gone wrong circumstances. But here comes her reluctant Knight in shining armour or black jeans in this case. The book has it's time travel portions as well as action scenes(so don't worry). But most of all it has a love story that will pull you in and have you laughing, hoping and rooting for that love we all find so magical. The story brings other Kurland novel charactors back to life by keeping the family tree alive. I couldn't stop reading and then passed it on to a friend who stayed up 'til 3:00 in the morning cheering on Patrick and his lady. The only other book I loved this much was a Dance through time, also by Kurland. Buy it, read it and you'll see what I am talking about.
Rating: Summary: Applause, Applause.... Review: Ms. Kurland has written a worthy addition to her collection. She does as she always does. The characters are well developed and thought out, very believeable people in a time-travel setting. The book was not written in a rush but carefully plotted and well written. Humor is one of Kurland's stronger draws and this book does not disappoint the reader. Reading this book is like a having family reunion with the opportunity to catch up on the characters she has written about in her previous novels and novellas. I can only wonder where Kurland's ideas and inspiration come from.... I am already wondering who will be the lead characters in her next novel and how long will it be before I can get my hands on it. Rating: Summary: The magic keeps coming. Review: Simply put: Don't miss this one. A Garden in the Rain is a wonderful, delightful book. One that you will love to add to your keeper collection. When I heard this book was coming out, I went to the bookstore everyday till they had it. I read it in two days. Ms. Kurland doesn't disappoint. I love the stories on the MacLeod clan. This one brings us Patrick, who you hear about in the other books, but not too much. I still think my favorite MacLeod is Jaime, and he's here too as well as Ian and the rest of the MacLeod lot. The dueling section where they stand around and watch Patrick is quite humorous in the way they banter with each other. You will get some new insights as well into the Fergusson/MacLeod relationship through time-travel and magic. If you haven't read any of the MacLeod stories, please do so. You won't be disappointed. I have read them over and over again and I never get tired of them.
Rating: Summary: A must read for Historical romance... Review: This book is definately a must read for any historical romance fan, especially if you love Lynn Kurland. I have been eating up her books, and can't get enough. This book started out a bit slow, but it is anything but.
