Rating: Summary: AWESOME Review: This book is awesome! The friendship of the two women (Frances Catherine and Judith "Elizabeth") from childhood to adulthood is wonderful to read. The attraction between Iain and Judith is completely understandable and realistic. A strange Englishwoman in the Highlands changes the Maitland Clan forever. The supporting characters are great too: Brodick, Isabelle, Patrick, Winslow and of course Frances Catherine. PS. The first chapter will totally capture--you meet Frances and Judith as they meet each other. It's unforgettable
Rating: Summary: :) Review: At first I hesitated to read this book. Then boredom got the best of me and the urge from a sweet boyfriend. So....I started this wonderful novel. Not only did I keep it in my hands, but it touched my heart as with all of Julie Garwood's books have done. I strongly recommend this book to everyone who loves a lovestory.
Rating: Summary: she did it again! Review: Wonderful story...and if you haven't already read it, go ahead and pick up Ransom also. Judith is a young, innocent woman who's been mistreated as most of the heroines in J.G.'s novels are, but each story has its own appeal. Her childhood friend is pregnant (this prologue isn't bad at all) and Iain Maitland is sent to pick her up. A Scottish laird, he detests the English, but he's totally captivated when he looks into her eyes. And so are two of his other warriers, Brodick and Ramsey. Their stories are told in Ransom. Judith captivates the Scots. Even the elders, who are set in their ways, warmed to her. I felt that the story lacked a big climax, even though Judith meeting her father was definitely important. However, I was hoping for a big shabang! Perhaps a gathering of the Macleans and the Maitlands. DEFINITE READ!
Rating: Summary: Breath Taking Review: When I picked this book up I was not sure if I would even be interested. You have to realize I am young married woman with a 2 year old and have not read a book since I was in early high school. I have been going through alot of phases lately and one, 'Who am I.'When I picked this book up I could not put it down I read it in 2 days. I tossed and turned that night until I woke up early the next morning to finish. I really feel like it changed something in me. I really want to find another book to read, but I do not feel anything will compare. I suggest this book to anyone who has a great love and friends in life.. It is so inspiring. It really makes you see that our world now is a make-up world. It was real back then, and you had to work hard for what you wanted and love. I just can not stop thinking about it.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read! Review: I think that this book is wonderful, I can't stop putting it down. I reccomend this book!! Frances Catherine and Judith Hampton were the best of friends before they know that they were suppose to be enemies. When they grew up they started separating, and when Frances Catherine is pregnant and she wants her best friend to accompany her, in case she dies. Too bad that her friend, Judith Hampton, is in a territorial land that's the enemy. They reasoned their way through and able to go for Judith. When Laird Ian came to pick her up to escort her into his land, it was literally love at first sight. With each day, they become closer and closer, but a secret lies within Judith hoping to see her father she's never known, the Laird Maclean. I found this book very loving and I hope that you will read too. ~
Rating: Summary: FABULOUS!!!! Review: I loved this book!! The characters came to life. This book is full of humor. I go back and read it again and again. If you like this book try "The Bride". Judith is one of the best heroines I've come across and Iain makes your heart sigh. I highly recommend this book!!
Rating: Summary: Lets You Down! Review: Start out very good. Great humor. Half way through, it becomes very simple and silly. Very unrealistic for the times. So, first half you think you have a great book and then what a let down.
Rating: Summary: --A story of friendship and love-- Review: This is the second book that I've read by Julie Garwood, and I have to say that even though the author uses a bit of a formula for her stories, I stayed interested in the plot and the characters. Judith Hampton and Frances Catherine had been friends since childhood and neither were bothered by the fact that Judith was English and Frances Catherine, Scottish. Frances Catherine's mother had died in childbirth and she had the fear that the same fate awaited her. The two friends made a pact that whenever Frances Catherine was married and ready to have a baby; Judith would be with her. Neither girl anticipated the fact that the Scottish lairds hated all things English and did not warm to the idea of having Judith visit Scotland. After a lot of debating, several Scotsman, including Laird Ian Maitland, go to England to bring Judith to her friend's assistance. Judith and Ian are immediately attracted to each other, but both fight the love and affection that seems inevitable. This is a good love story, but I also found the information about birthing and mid-wives to be interesting. The horror that women faced when dealing with childbirth in the dark ages was unbelievably barbaric and often tragic. Good read!
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: This was my 1st Julie Garwood book and I loved it. It was a easy read since I love historical romances! The characters were easy to fall in love with and the story line had enough twists in it to keep it interesting. It took a little getting used to reading how women were treated back then but a good read all the same! I'm looking forward to reading the sequel "Ransom" next.
Rating: Summary: A definite MUST for your 'Re-Read' Shelf! Review: I know I have one, and this book is definitely in the top tier. There are some books by romance authors that you can just go and read over and over again, and I find that this is one of the best. The story starts out charming and doesn't stop there. You're introduced to two little girls -- Judith and Frances Catherine, who should not be friends -- because one is English and one is Scottish. Of course, that never stopped anybody! They become best friends and maintain this bond through the years. Fast forward a bit and Scottish Frances Catherine is expecting her first baby, and wants English Judith to be at her side. The laird, Iain Maitland, figures that Judith will say no to this request, and takes 3 of his men to go get her. To everyone's surprise, Judith is not only ready, but she's practically begging to be taken away from her abusive household. Along the way, Iain and Judith fall in love, and the Secret of Judith's past threatens to tear them apart for all time. Of course, it won't because this is a romance novel, but there is still a lot of mystery and conflict surrounding the refreshingly innocent Judith. There is a ton of humor in this book -- you will laugh over what the Scottish men say when they discuss Judith. You'll laugh over Judith's actions as she worries herself into a panic. I laughed my head off at the beginning of the book, with the strange friendship between Frances Catherine and Judith. It is obvious that Julie Garwood has a love for life and loves to laugh -- it is inherent through her books. I cannot stress how much I love this book! Judith is very innocent and stubborn, and has had a hard life. You'll find yourself really cheering for her as the story goes by, and wanting everything to work out for her. She charms everyone she runs into (and charms the reader as well) Frances Catherine is a gem and I found that Iain was very easy to fall in love with. This is a story where all the characters are perfect, and fun to read about. No long, extended arguments, no long, extended seperations, none of the things that normally drive me nuts in a romance book -- Julie Garwood has made 'The Secret' into romantic perfection.
