Rating: Summary: So good - I could not put it down! Review: Rarely do I just sit down in one evening and read all nite but this book was just that good!! I also normally do not enjoy books from the earlier time period as much, but again Born in Sin is a total exception. I found myself totally caught up in this man's (Sin's) life of tragedy. It was just so horendous what he indured. I realize things like this certainly happened in this time period but it was just such a compelling story. For me the love of Callie was just so beautiful and I just thought it an incredible love story. I am looking forward to many more of MacGregor's books.
Rating: Summary: A Dark and Passionate Tale! Review: Sin is a tortured man with a tortured past. Held prisoner by the Saracens, he is used as an assassin on their behalf. He finds himself killing and carrying out their orders for a scrap of food, a night without a beating. Yes, it is that bad! When he is sent to assassin King Henry he sees an opportunity to escape his masters. Henry takes him up on his offer of allegiance and Sin finds himself free. Twelve years later Sin is ordered by the King to marry Caledonia MacNeely in an effort to infiltrate the Scots and weed out the infamous "Raider" causing havoc to the English. Sin, a MacAllister by birth, was shunned and discarded by his father and stepmother and rebels against this royal order. Henry, however, insists and Sin finds himself married to the beautiful Caledonia. This story really demonstrates how love can turn even the most hardened hearted back towards love. Caledonia, a warm and sweet character, finds herself falling madly in love with Sin. Sin, not knowing what love is, finds his heart thawing. BORN IN SIN is not without surprises. Indeed in one scene my jaw went slack. It's a fun and delightful surprise awaiting the reader. It might be unbelievable in some regards; it still was a delightful touch. Enjoy a wonderful escape by reading this touching story. BORN IN SIN is Book 2 of the MacAllisters if you follow the traditional series rules, however there is a tie in to Kinley MacGregor's other series The Brotherhood of the Sword. In that case, it is book 3. TAMING THE SCOTMAN, Book 3 of The MacAllisters (Ewan's story) is soon to follow!
Rating: Summary: Love for the Unlovable Review: Sin, the illegitimate son of a Scottish Laird and advisor to the King has buried his frozen heart, circumstances left him no other option. His fathers' first-born son but his mother is English and he's denied his lineage. Never told his birthday nor did he get presents for Christmas, no one even bothered to name him. When he asked why he was always called lad, his stepmother named him "Sin", telling him that could be the only name for him since he was conceived in sin, born in sin, and will die that way. He proudly accepted the name since people love sin-someone will love him, too. By the age of 14, he was being trained to become an assassin for his slave master and by the age 18, he had to kill or be killed. He's a proud warrior and the only thing he has or will ever need is his honor. King Henry needs Sin to go to Scotland and bring the Raider to justice so there will be peace. Caledonia MacNeely, charming, fearless Scotswoman is being held hostage by King Henry to keep her people at bay but has to marry Sin or else her clansmen will perish. Callie agrees and immediately begins planning another escape. Since her escape plans continue to fail she knows this marriage is the only way she will be allowed to return home. Having led a life filled with the love of her family, she does not shun Sin she wants to get to know him and soon feels Sin is a good man and is determined to make their marriage work. Though shocked to learn her husband's past, she's not afraid to show him her attraction to him, she has no idea of the hope she gives to someone whose never even been given a hug. Sin is determined to have their marriage annulled as soon as he snuffs out the Raider, he'll going back to England. Besides Callie deserves a man who can love her and he doesn't even know what the word means and he'd rather die celibate than have his child suffer in this world. He's never been loved; doesn't need love now neither does he need anyone's pity; he's used to being alone. Well, she does it again, another great MacAllister Highlander story. Callie is just perfect for Sin. She loves him inspite of his past and refuses to give up on him. Sin tries but can't resist the love she freely offers him. I anxiously wait to see where Ms. MacGregor will go from here surely Lochlan and especially the elusive Ewan deserve their stories as well.
Rating: Summary: Bad! Really Bad! Review: So trite! So many tired phases! The hero, so tried, so true, so tortured! So bad! He didn't even have a birthday- nor any Christmas presents! Never loved! NO mother! No love! So many 20th Century phrasings! So old! The usual Scottish vs English during the Plantagenet era. (Could have been the Tudor era!) I bought this book only because it promised a storm for the weekend. Will I ever buy a book from this author again? Noooooo! Even the "romantic" scenes were so tired- so trite...need I go on? Sophomoric, really.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Wow! & More Wow! Review: The moment I finished this book I wanted to pick it up and read it again. This book caught me from the very first page. Sin's story is the saddest think I have ever heard. My heart hurt so much during this book. I loved the way Sin & Callie's relationship played out. I liked Callie's sence of humor and the way she made Sin laugh. In some parts you could almost feel Sin's heart opening up to Callie. This book was truly amazing it is my favorite out of all of Kinley MacGregor books so far. If you are looking for a wonderful story this is for you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Rating: Summary: Terrific Laughs, Plenty of Drama, Great Love Scenes Review: The story line is quite basic. A knight (Sin) in the service of the English king is ordered to marry a Scottish heiress (Callie), in order to get her clan under English control. Neither the bride nor the groom wants the marriage, but they are given no choice. When they meet, they are attracted to one another, but both are independent and don't want to lose their freedom. Sin decides not to sleep with her, so that he can get an annulment later. After the forced marriage, they return to Callie's lair in Scotland. Her clan is angry that an Englishman is now moving into their land. Callie's younger brother causes problems to try and force Sin out of their home. Over time, Sin proves his bravery and selflessness by saving the lives of the Scottish people who have been shunning him. He eventually wins their respect. Callie is determined to break through Sin's hard exterior. She plans to honor her marriage vows. She lavishes Sin with praise and affection. Sin begins to soften and open up to Callie. However, he worries that he is not honorable enough to deserve Callie's devotion. Sin's brothers and childhood friends join the story about mid- way through. They are a terrific source of humor. The story as a whole can get quite dark, because Sin's childhood involved a lot of rejection and severe abuse. So the humor is a welcome break. Callie is likable, because she is strong and stubborn, but still soft- hearted and feminine. She can wield a sword with great skill, unfortunately the author only brings that skill into the story once. I would have enjoyed seeing more of Callie's strength and ability. Overall, the story is quite captivating. Not very original, but definitely well written. It kept me interested from start to finish. The love scenes are great and there is refreshing surprise involved. I would easily be giving this book 5 stars if the basic story line was more unique.
Rating: Summary: Excellent medieval romance! Review: This author's books really speak to me. I enjoy history, but when I read a romance I'm looking for characters I can care about and root for. This book definitely delivers! Sin is my favorite kind of hero. He's a big, bad warrior tortured by his past and feeling unworthy of love. But he is also misunderstood (in more than one way, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it yet). This is a wonderful romance by an author who speaks to a woman's heart.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Another Great Story Review: This is a wonderful book. Kinley MacGregor AKA-Sherrilyn Kenyon has written yet another great story. She makes the characters and story line come alive. This is yet another example of her very creative writing. Keep up the awesome work!
Rating: Summary: Five stars is not enough!! Review: This was one of the best books that I have ever read. Sin's torment was absolutley heartbreaking, and yet Callie loved him anyway. The bond between him and his brothers brought tears to my eyes! This is the first book that I have read of Kinley Macgregor's, but, after reading this book, I know I will buy more, especially the Macallister series.
