Rating: Summary: Before you get too critical, think about it... Review: Reading some of the reviews here so far made me pause. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't criticize. But I thought this novel to be entertaining. I didn't find Victoria to be a spineless girl - but a girl not experienced in the ways of the world. That's why Ms. Kleypas depicted her as a loyal sheltered daughter to an aging scholarly father. Yes, the hero seduced her - but they both really believed her to be an experienced courtesan at the time of their initial 'encounter'. After that what difference did it make? The damage was done. And as for the weather - don't you people have anything else to do? I live in an area where the winters are brutal. That doesn't mean there won't be a day or two where the temps will climb to the 70's. It happens. Fiction is the suspension of disbelief after all... Write on Ms. Kleypas. I am anxious for the story on Sir Ross.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: This is the first book I have read from Lisa Kleypas. I was disappointed. The characters and the storyline did not keep my interest. I kept reading it, thinking it would get better because it had good reviews. I will give her another try, but do not think this book rates the stars given it.
Rating: Summary: Good read despite having no real sense of time Review: One reviewer wondered where the salt water in the Thames came from. I never quite figured out how the story progressed seasonally. At the beginning the characters were cold as seemed befitting the dead of winter. But when the action switched to Vivian's village, voila! Springtime! Sure, spring follows winter, but not so completely in the short space of time in which the action took place. DESPITE all that, the love story is pretty terrific. If you're tired of historical romance novels with a duke, marquess, earl, viscount or baron as the hero, you will find Grant Morgan a refreshing change. The heroine is strong and well-drawn and a perfect match for her hero.
Rating: Summary: Where did the salt water come from? Review: At the beginning of this book, when Our Heroine is fished, three quarters drowned, out of the Thames, did anyone besides me wonder where the "salt water" that she was supposed to have drowned in (and which is mentioned not once, but over and over and OVER again) came from? The Thames was many things in the nineteenth century--an open sewer, among othem--but what it was NOT was salt water.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Read !!! Another Shelf-keeper!!! Review: "Then Came You" and "Dreaming Of You" are exceptional to extraordinary historical romance books. Lisa Kleypas is still in form with "Someone To Watch Over Me". Not quite 5 stars, but certainly 4-1/2 stars, it is an excellent read!!!
Rating: Summary: After reading this book, I wanted more of her stories! Review: Lisa's stories show the heroine as much more than weak-willed women like other historical romances. They are the kind of characters you hope were around in those days. She gives them looks, brains and independence! This story is a good test of wills that leaves you feeling good about the characters and their lives.
Rating: Summary: Who cares if she'll be accepted at Almacks Review: Who cares if this book is true to the period. Who cares if Vivian is accepted by Sally Jersey at Almacks. Who cares what the ton thinks. It's a romance novel and I loved it!
Rating: Summary: Why don't authors study the period? Review: This novel is absurd on many levels and the characters are cardboard. Under no circumstances would a woman allow herself to become "soiled goods" before she was married, even if she wanted a man. The consequences were too great. A woman must marry and provide the heir before she cavorted like Lady Caroline Lamb. A woman who had been known to spend weeks in a strange man's bed without being married to him would never, ever be accepted in society, no matter how much she unselfishly wished to help poor orphans. This herione is so sickenly sweet and grateful to the man who seduces her. I wanted to yell "get a backbone!" And when her courtesan of a sister heads off to rejoin her own society while obviously pregnant, it was almost laughable. If writers insist on putting our present view of morality on characters from the past, they do their readers a great disservice. I recommend readers to check out Marion Chesney, a British writer who knows the Regency period.
Rating: Summary: Another wonderful story from Ms. Kleypas. Review: "Someone to Watch Over Me" is yet another great book from the pen of Lisa Kleypas. All her previous novels are exceptionally intelligent, written for the reader who expects more from the romance genre than silly little plots with ridiculous dialogues.
Rating: Summary: Excuse me! Review: Vivien is NOT "plump"!!!! And petite women can be beautiful, as Vivien obviously is. (For goodness sake! Vivien was the most sought-after courtesan in London! You can hardly be plain for THAT position.) Now that I have that out of the way, I want to say that "Someone to Watch Over Me" is one of the best romances that I've read recently. The characters are positively 3-D, and the storyline is unique as well. You have to give this one a try, especially if you're a Kleypas fan. I loved the book, and I hope you will, too. One more note: I loved the title!
