Rating: Summary: Light, Fun Read Review: I will agree with other reviews which state this book is predictable and not a "literary masterpiece", but I am rating it 5 stars. When I picked up the book I knew it was going to be light and fun, and that's exactly what I wanted! I wanted a book to get my mind off of things, and that's exactly what this book offered. If you are looking for a novel which will make you think, this is not for you. If you are looking for something to take to the beach, or if you are looking for a book which will take your mind off everyday details, this is it!
Rating: Summary: What Fun!! Review: What a fun week lounging by the pool with two great books! The Bachelor is serious fun, a warm romance with a great story that sometimes turns very HOT! Steamed up those sunglasses and called for a dip in the water. The second novel and a perfect companion was Shade of the Maple, a very poetic, deeply moving timeless love story that left me weeping behind those sunglasses. A better week one could not have!
Rating: Summary: Good Summer Read Review: I chose this book because is was recommended by Kelly Ripa as part of her book club. As you will notice with all the books she has chosen, they are not literary classics but they are a good, fun read. There is a preview to the next book in this series "The Playboy", which focuses on the same characters. It will hit the stands in December. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted something fun and entertaining, but nothing too serious. I would probably read the next book in the series.
Rating: Summary: The Bachelor is a surefire crowd-pleaser Review: The latest romantic romp from seasoned Harlequin author Carly Philips looks all set to usher out the popular Winston Brothers and propel her trio - the Chandler brothers of Yorkshire to equal stellar status. The Bachelor, the first book of a trilogy features globe-trotting journalist Roman Chandler who rushes back to hometown when his mother Raina is hospitalized. What better timing to withhold her medical status and feign fatal cardiac arrest so as to push her sons to bestow her a grandson! The reluctant Roman is the fated "sacrificial lamb" through a coin toss between the brothers. His wife-hunt begins inauspiciously with unsuitable candidates and to worsen situations - a panty thief is on the loose and the town suspects him - the women fascinated by his kinky predilections hounds him. His interest lies in his high-school ex-crush Charlotte Bronson who opens the local lingerie shop. However Charlotte swears anathema to him for fear of the nomadic Roman following her father's footstep in abandoning her. Can love blossom between the polarized couple despite their sexual chemistry? With warmth and snappy humour, Carly Philips wows the readers to the hum of the thriving small-town through memorable characters and hilarious encounters, knitting fraternity with a sub-romance plot seamlessly. However it is the explosive chemistry and shimmering passion between heartfelt characters Roman and Charlotte that makes The Bachelor dashing for the altars - and the bestseller list simultaneously.
Rating: Summary: Put A Smile On My Face Review: I have to say for a "Summer" read this was an enjoyable book. The premise is about three bachelor brothers. This particular book focuses on Roman. Their busy body, but good natured mother, is ready for them to settle down, get married and give her a grandchild. She fakes heart trouble to get them to feel her days are numbered. The book is written in such an uplifting fun manner. Even though there is some deception is the book it is done in a manner that doesn't hurt anyone. There is sex in this book but it's not overly explicit. There is also a "panty thief" sago that is entertaining even if it is pretty obvious who is doing it. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick, romantic enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.
Rating: Summary: Winner of the WordWeaving Award for Excellence Review: Raina Chandler rushes to the hospital with the symptoms of a heart attack. Relieved to learn it is only acute indigestion, Raina decides to turn the situation to her advantage. None of her three sons have married. On one hand, she wants her sons married and she wants grandchildren. On the other hand, her sons believe the word bachelor is sacred. Only a life-or-death emergency will convince her sons of the necessity to get married. The younger two brothers excuse oldest brother Chase on the basis of his sacrificing his life to the family business and flip a coin. Roman becomes the first of the Chandler bachelors to sacrifice his freedom. He savors his freedom and intends to maintain his job as a correspondent to the Associated Press. His future wife will just have to accept his frequent absences. Then he learns that the only girl he could never forget has returned to town. Charlotte Bronson felt the allure of Roman years ago; on their only date she also learned of his plans to depart their small hometown as soon as the opportunity arose. Her mother's example proved the heartache of such an arrangement, so she walked away, but her heart never forgot. Now she is back in Yorkshire Falls and so is Ramon Chandler. It has been ten years, and one look still turns her into a hormonal teenager. But she refuses involvement with a guy who will not be sticking around. The struggle between stability and the need for freedom come head to head in Carly Phillips' THE BACHELOR. Phillips' gift for writing brazenly sensual romance founded on strong emotional connections makes THE BACHELOR a keeper. As Charlotte and Roman struggle with her need for roots and his wanderlust, they both must confront the truth of their own motivations and desires. Add to that a subplot of a panty pilferer who targets only purchases made at Charlotte's lingerie shop, and the result is absolutely terrific. Tender, searing, and amusing, THE BACHELOR earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence. Readers will be pleased to learn the next part of the trilogy, THE PLAYBOY, will be available in December 2002, with the concluding segment, THE LONER, available in May 2003.
Rating: Summary: Both funny and charming - a great beach read Review: Reviewed by Kristie Leigh Maguire, MyShelf.com Roman Chandler, youngest of three brothers - handsome, dark hair, sexy bedroom blue eyes, wonderful physique, world traveling journalist - and definitely a confirmed bachelor. Raina Chandler, mother of three bachelor sons - widowed and lonely - who wanted grandchildren above anything else. Charlotte Bronson, eligible woman in town - beautiful, long black hair down past her shoulders, gorgeous body - with a crush on Roman that went back to high school days. Roman had no intentions of changing his carefree, globe trotting bachelor ways, even though he did lose the coin toss between the three brothers that designated him the 'loser' who had to get married to give his mother her heart's desire - grandchildren. He intended on finding a woman in Yorkshire Falls who would be content to be left behind, tending to the babies, while he went on about his life - coming home every now and then, when he felt like it. Charlotte had her chance with Roman back in high school. The chemistry between them was off the Richter scale. But Charlotte carried a lot of baggage around with her. When Roman confided in her that he wanted to pursue a career as a journalist after high school and that his heart's desire was to travel the world, Charlotte quickly doused her burning feelings for Roman. She didn't want a man like her father, who came and went in her life just as he pleased, with no thought of how much it hurt to be abandoned. But old flames burn bright. The chemistry between Roman and Charlotte still blazed high even after all these years. Carly Phillips takes the reader on a fascinating journey with Roman and Charlotte as they work their way through the muddle of emotions they find themselves in. Carly writes a story that is light, funny - and very hot! You don't want to miss this first novel in her Warner Trilogy - THE BACHELOR. It will leave you panting for the other two novels in the trilogy - THE PLAYBOY and THE LONER.
Rating: Summary: Good Fun Reading! Review: The Bachelor By Carly Phillips is the first of the Chandler Brothers Trilogy. This is one of the first contemporary novels I've read (I'm more of a historical romance person). This was a fun read. Nothing earth-shattering or profound. It's a cute story about a mother and her three grown sons. Mom wants all three sons to get married, settle down, and give her grandchildren. However, she has to feign an illness just to get the ball rolling with her three sons who have no interest in getting married at all. "The Bachelor" starts with the youngest named Roman. The second is, "The Playboy" the middle son, Rick, and ends with "The Heartbreaker" the oldest son, Chase. I am currently reading "The Playboy". So far so good. In conclusion, "The Bachelor" is a four stars. Only because there are some parts in the story that makes you want to roll your eyes...haa! haa!
Rating: Summary: Found Lacking Review: I had great anticipation going into this book, what I found, however, was disappointment. While I liked the main `heroine', Charlotte, who felt to me like she had real fears and beliefs. I found that Roman was not as likeable. He seemed flat without any realistic characteristics. Throughout the book, although there were ups, there were also downs. Their whole relationship in the book seemed based more on a physical plain than on love or substance. It never really felt like a real relationship.
As for the other characters, they were all delightful and enjoyable, especially the owners of the diner, the town vagrant, and Beth. Not to mention the Chandler brothers mother and her `beau'. I was hoping Beth would be a main character in either one of the next books in the trilogy or have her own book. It appears that won't happen, but you never know.
While it was enjoyable at times, and I'm sure others will love it, I found it lacking for me.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing. Review: I just got around to reading this book long after it was talked about by Kelly Ripa. What a disappointment! I expected more after all the hoop-la. The characters are likeable (thus the 2-stars), but there is no plot. The whole thing is shallow. I wish I had not bought the trilogy before reading the first one.
