Summary: Better than people make it out to be...
Review: I was a little surprised by the comments being made about this book. I agree that I prefer some Johanna Lindsey's older titles; however, I really enjoyed this novel and was surprised it was receiving such censure. I happen to like the romance novels where the heroine is not just absolutely, drop-dead gorgeous and the attraction is not immediate but something grows over time. That is what makes a true romance.

That said, the only complaint, which not really a complaint but an observation, was that there could have been some more anticipation leading up to the first love scene. I was actually shocked how quickly it occured and thought it a little unlikely that the heroine wouldn't put a little bit of a fight the first time our hero attempted to take liberties....but such is the case.

All in all, this is a good novel; one that I have read more than once.

Summary: 1/2* A bit dissapointed...
Review: I was looking foward to this book after reading the flap, hoping it was have more in common with her earlier works. I was a bit dissapointed in this book and read it in less than four hours.

While I really felt for Marion, I didn't understand why she felt that she had to hide herself so much. She then felt attracted to Chad, but was going to give him up to save him from her sister's clutches. She isn't a matryr (?), but she acted like all Amanda's actions were her responsibility. Then I have to say I was shocked by how sudden Marion and Chad became lovers. One minute he doesn't like her, the next he's dragging her down in the hay.

I felt that Lindsey spent too much time describing Amanda's faults, so by the end of the book when she tried to portray Amanda in a different light, I could really have cared less. I felt that she got what she deserved. There just wasn't the emotion that I normally find in Lindsey's books. If this is your first book by Lindsey, don't be dissapointed, because there are much better ones out there!

Summary: 3 1/2 stars and I'm Dissapointed
Review: I was really looking foward to this book. The plot sounded original enough.
Marian and Amanda are twins. Amanda is beautiful but nasty. Marian, might be identical to Amanda, but she hides, purposelly, behind thick glasses and ugly clothes.
Their father, which seemed to be incapable of loving two people at once, hence he prefered Amanda, dies. And the sisters are sent to Texas to their only alive relative, Aunt Red.
Enters Chad in the picture. A hunky cowboy who's helping Red with her ranch, and who happens to be the son and heir of the richest and most powerful, but extremely nice, rancher in Texas.
He ends up picking them up and immediately feels attracted to Amanda. But eventually he notices the real Amanda and the real Marian...and goes and falls in love with Marian. But one mistake leads to another and cowardice does not allow for the truth to come out. Hence, more problems arise. Until the unexpected happens and finally Chad decides to be persistant and confront Marian to fix things.
The characters were not well developed. The relationship between Chad and Marian does not seem to have a real basis. I mean there's a transition, but at the same time, it is not very palpable. There are no memorable moments or anything of the sort.
However, I did ended the book in a day and was entertained. Yes I would say read this book...if you have nothign more important to read, if you like Historicals, and dont mind lack of detail in relationship and character development.

Summary: A Man to Call My Own
Review: I was so disappointed with the content of this book. It is very shallow, no plot, no character development. A waste of time

Summary: Where was the editor?
Review: I'm a Johanna Lindsey fan. I will admit that I've enjoyed some of her novels more than others. But of all of them, this has to be the most obnoxious. The characters were extremely shallow. The plot had potential but fell flat. Amanda's behavior was so contradictory at the end that it just didn't fit. But the one thing that drove me completely batty was the incorrect use of the expression "I could not care less". That is the correct use of that expression. It signifies that the speaker feels complete indifference. Throughout the novel the expression "I could care less" was used. This is incorrect! The sentence as used in the novel implies that the speaker cares a great deal not that the speaker feels indifference, which the correct use of the expression would. This was not misused once, or even twice, but MULTIPLE times. Where was the editor? And why would the publisher print such a deplorable book in hardback for heaven's sake? I'm afraid the publisher did Ms. Lindsey a disservice by not ensuring a product of the same caliber as her prior work. I was very disappointed.

Summary: Bland, disappointing
Review: I've been a fan of Johanna Lindsey for many years, but this isn't one of her best books. The plot is weak and wanders frequently. There is a great amount of repetition, also. It's almost as if Ms. Lindsey experienced writer's block and chose repetition as a way to help her add more pages.

The characters and the dialogue were terribly dull and simplistic, as well. The book reads as if it was written by an entirely different author. What happened, Johanna?

If you must read this novel, take the advice of a previous reviewer and borrow it from the library. Don't waste your hard-earned money.

Summary: Okay, who wrote this book??
Review: Maybe JL reviewed it and made some changes, but I doubt that she wrote it. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but not "JL good." If this was any other author I probably would have given it 5 stars, but I have read all JL's book and know what she is capable of writing.

A few of the reasons I didn't give it 5 stars is as follows:

1) The stable scene -- what happened? I'm still not sure. It was so abrupt. Absolutely no sexual tension to lead up to such an interlude; 2) When Chad and Marian admitted they loved each other, I was actually in shock. When did it happen? I actually flipped back through the pages to see what I had missed; 3) Where's the dialogue? We actually got to know them through their thoughts!!

The end was very, very good. That's why I gave it 4 stars. Overall, I would recommend this book (in paperback). It was good.

Summary: Could have been a whole lot better...
Review: My review is going to be right in there with everyone elses. There have been times that I read reviews and then read the book and wondered if they read the same thing I did. But this time I have to agree with others. I did finish the book but it was just ok. The characters aren't well developed. I got tired of the twin Amanda being so hateful and whinny. Why couldn't the other characters see past Marian wearing the thick glasses for disquise and being bullied by Amanda. There was too much repetition in phrases through out the book. The story was slow moving- I skipped pages really bad just to get through it and when I did I didn't miss anything. Sorry, but I won't recommend reading it- too many other good ones out there.

Summary: A Man To Call My Own
Review: Ok so Amanda the bad whiny twin and marian the sweet good twin. So I read this on the back cover and tbink to my self here's a story with great potential aftera all its written by johanna Lidnesey. I was so wrong what ever potential this storyline had was completly skipped over. I have read plenty of shotty books befor, however i never the need or compulsion to committe on one untill this very moment. Do you know i honestly ended up liking the story line between Amanda and Spencer better than Marian and Chad. Amanda was supposed be so bad and spoiled however the worst thing she did was lie about her and chad and marian let her do that so that was marians fault. Amanda whined and through tantrums so what she hurts some guys feeling who are to dense to notice the real Amanda so i go and do what make myself look like a spenster to protect some future guys feelings. Oh yeah that made real sense. What happend to the old Johanna Lidsey who wrote stories you couldn't put down, this felt totally rushed nothing was flushed out not the storyline or the characters. I would not buy this book wait and check it out at the library if you must read it don't waist good money.

Summary: Great western romance
Review: On the train coming home from a Chicago business trip, Mortimer Laton fell between cars and died. Following the funeral in his hometown of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Mortimer's attorney Albert Bridges reads the will in which the preponderance of the estate went to his twin daughters equally. Worried about fortune hunters, Mortimer had one stipulation. To inherit, the girls must marry, but until they do his sister Kathleen will serve as their guardian and approve any groom. Amanda angrily leaves, but Marian understands that they will move to Texas to live with an unknown aunt.

Chad Kinkaid works on Kathleen's ranch though he will inherit the neighboring spread. He is attracted immediately to Marian in spite of her dotty clothing and thick spectacles. She falls in love with Chad, but Marian believes he loves Amanda because no one ever cared about her. While Amanda falls in love with someone who seems indifferent to her and Chad has trouble persuading his beloved that they belong together, a behind the scenes manipulator has other plans for the Laton cash.

Though there has been a rash of twins serving as protagonists lately, A MAN TO CALL MY OWN is an invigorating 1870s Texas romance. The plot contains an interesting major twist that will surprise the audience but also serve as a reminder of how far communication has come in under a century and a half. Though there is plenty of action, the story line focuses on the couples, more so on Marian and Chad, who readers will like. Johanna Lindsey provides an absorbing tale that her fans will appreciate.
