Rating: Summary: not McNaught's best...but a great story! Review: McNaught is my favorite author, hands down. The only reason that I don't give this book 5 stars is because of the period where Jordan is gone and Alexandra has to face British society and the reality of the nature of her husband...I was bored during this part and never have read it again...I skip it when I re-read the novel and it is a significant portion of the book.Alexandra is a great heroine. She is a strong woman with a belief that the world is a wonderful place: dirt smells nice and people are all noble and good. After saving a man's life in the woods she is thought to be compromised and forced to marry Jordan. Jordan is actually a great hero. He is a rogue in the begining of the novel, forced to marry a young girl that he feels nothing for, he won't admit he is attracted to her! Jordan goes missing for a time in this novel and Alex is forced to face the reality that the man she married is not perfect. All the time he is gone, Jordan pines for his perfectly innocent wife...by the time he makes it back safely to her arms will they be to different to fall in love? read the book to find out! As I said above, the part where Jordan is gone kind of ruins this book for me. This is amongst the shortest of McNaught's novels and they are separated for a while. On the other hand, this separation made this novel more unique than many other McNaught novels (which usually dirve the characters apart using mis-communication). This book is a refreshing change to average romance novels! McNaught is a born story teller! The end, which I would never give away, is great and always makes me cry and laugh!!
Rating: Summary: 5 stars of course... Review: What can I say? The best as usual. Jordon is the ultimate man! Watching their love grow was amazing. The love scenes were sizzling but not trashy as some can be and it was all intertwined with a beautiful and exciting love story. Alex tries so hard to fit in with London society and it is touching to read. It made me feel as though I were there watching everything unfold. Don't miss this one!
Rating: Summary: It just doesn't get any better than this... Review: I honestly believe that Judith McNaught could write a grocery list and have fully developed characters and sensuality to die for. You cannot go wrong here. Buy anything with these two words: "Judith" and "McNaught." It doesn't get any better.
Rating: Summary: A Great Romance Novel Review: Starting off with a bit of personal background, I am an English major who usually reads the likes of Faulkner, Nabokov, and Wharton. I find most romances absolutely ridculous because the men are unattractive, unappealing louts, and the women are just plain dumb; moreover the stories are bad. Anyway, one night I was stuck at my Aunt's house, and I needed something to read. Going against my better judgement, I picked up "Something Wonderful." Boy, am I glad I did. Sure the premise is unbelieveable, but isn't that the same with all fairy tales? And "Something Wonderful" is truly a fairy tale. Alexandra Lawrence is neither rich nor beautiful, but she's got a whole lot of brains and spunk. On the other hand, Jordan Townsende is a duke who is both rich and beautiful, but has a hardened, cynical heart. Is Alexandra the girl to fill Jordan's life love, laughter, and happiness? Absolutely. The story is predictable, but darling, and the characters are, surprise, surprise: likeable. (And I mean all the characters are likeable; I couldn't help but love the Dowager Duchess and the silly society gossip, Roddy, who befriends Alex.) Also, I appreciated that Jordan is initially attracted to Alexandra as a person, and not just as some overly gorgeous and glorified sex-object. I have read this book who knows how many times, and each time I read it, I feel like a little girl reading Cinderella. If you read it, you'll love it, I promise.
Rating: Summary: Another Goodie Review: I totally enjoyed this book. It grabbed me from page one and never let go. this remains on my shelf for yet another one of those book droughts I know I will have, and will sustain me until another Judith McNaught masterpiece is written.
Rating: Summary: This book is truly "Something Wonderful" Review: This book is already one of my favorites, as is every book I have read from Judith McNaught. The story is so romantic and so full of emotions that it will make you cry and laugh and fall in love with the characters. Specially Jordan! Trust McNaught to create an amazing, unforgettable, sexy and absolutely lovable hero. The only thing that bothered me a little about the book is the reception Jordan received from those he loved when he returned. They considered him dead, and mourned him for more than a year, however, when he reappears, nobody hugs him or shows any signs of joy, specially Alexandra. I know that she was dissapointed of the things she learned about him, but she should have felt happy that he was alive. My favorite scene is when he thinks that she is going to die and starts talking to her and telling her about his feelings. It brought tears to my eyes! A delicious book. You will not be able to pu it down!(at least I couldn't)
Rating: Summary: Not quite Once and Always, but . . . Review: This was a very sweet book at the beginning, but it irritated me that he would stop believing in her. . . Other then that I loved the way he courted her and his grandmother was a wonderful addition to the book. The ending was a little predictable but in a way that you really want it to end.
Rating: Summary: Okay, but not one of McNaught's best Review: I think Something Wonderful is probably a lot better than most romance novels out there, having been written by Judith McNaught. As one of her works, this was far from being a favorite of mine though, and I think it's because I agree with what a previous reader said on how it was unbelievable that a duke* could be forced to marry a peasant during that time. I don't mean to sound callus and cynical, but the context of the situation must not be taken lightly, even if this is* a romance novel. To put it straight, it is HIGHLY improbable that it would ever happen. It would be even more believable if Jordan married Alexandra of his own freewill (and this shouldn't be difficult for him, being a JM hero...they don't care for public censure anyway) But how could someone like Felicia Lawrence force a powerful man like Jordan into an unwanted marraige? Granted that Jordan was an honorable man; He probably would've made amends in some other way...but it makes no sense that he would marry Alexandra when she wasn't even part of the world Jordan existed in. It is unbelievable that he would bind himself to a VIRTUAL STRANGER FOR LIFE (political correctness did not exist during this time, either), that he would take someone he DIDN'T* EVEN LIKE, as his Duchess. (Clayton Westmoreland at least, knew Whitney from a distance before persuing her, and Victoria Fielding was connected to Jason through his father, Charles) This was enough to darken the premise of the story for me, along with the fact that I'm also not fond of the 'tomboy transforms into a beauty' scheme which I find overused in a lot of romances. And here's another strange thing to ponder on. When Jordan last saw Alexandra before getting kidnapped, she was flat chested. Then all of a sudden, in one year she sprouts breasts??? Seriously speaking, I understand that she was a late bloomer, but even late bloomers (17* year old late bloomers), don't magically transform in one year! My arguments may sound petty to most of the readers who enjoyed this novel, but I think it's important to be objective even when it comes to ficional stories written by a favorite author. Something Wonderful was not a great book, but will always have a place in my shelf simply because I love Judith's writing style.
Rating: Summary: Aptly named -- this book IS Something Wonderful! Review: Quite possibly one of my favorite Judith McNaught books -- I know, I know, all the reviews here say that, right? But Judith McNaught really shines in Georgian England, and this book demonstrates that with a story that will make you want to flip the book right over and read it again. It's the story of Alexandra, who we can all relate to. She's a little too poor, a little too plain, and a little too smart to make it in London's ton, not that she could afford it anyways. She runs into Jordan Townsende, the jaded Duke of Hawthorne, and is immediately smitten by him (did I mention she's horribly naive?). Jordan, who is used to having ladies falling all over him, is charmed by just how different tomboyish Alex is from everyone else he knows, and he finds himself having some rather strong feelings for her, despite the fact that he's forced into marrying her. You'd think things would turn out great for these cute kids, except Fate sticks in her fickle hand, and Jordan is lost to his family for over a year, and Alexandra blossoms into a well bred beauty that is the toast of London. Jordan reappears, and they must decide what to do with themselves now that they are husband and wife again.... I feel like I could gush on and on about this book. Judith McNaught really sucks you in with the way she describes her characters. You want to reach into the pages and protect Alexandra when she's making a complete fool of herself, and cry along with her when she gets her heart broken -- she's impossible not to like. And Jordan, well, I don't think there's a woman out there that doesn't want to 'save' Jordan from his misery. This book certainly tugs on the heartstrings -- I even cried at the ending! And I've already read it four times!
Rating: Summary: Truly Wonderful! Review: I am an avid romance reader. I've read all of Judith McNaught's books, and without a doubt, this one is the best (and of course my favorite of all her books). The plot is wonderful and the characters are unforgettable - especially Alexandra and Jordan. I read this book in one night - I just couldn't put it down! This book is definitely a keeper. Other books that I found very good by the same author are: "Whitney, My Love," and "Once and Always."
