Summary: Great mix of humor and romance
Review: Tell Me Lies led me to go out and get my hands on every Jennifer Crusie book I could find. It was the first one I read and remains one of my favorite re-reads.

I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud while reading Tell Me Lies. While particularly appealing to those with small town backgrounds (myself included), there's something here for everyone. The overbearing mother, the old flame who still makes your heart pitter patter, a best friend who brings you chocolate - these are characters we all can relate to. Add in a dash of romance, a murder mystery, secrets from the past, a fast paced plot, and lots of chuckles and this makes for a great read. I loved Maddie's quest to redefine herself and the funny, yet poignant answers she found. On top of that, Crusie does a great job of keeping you guessing "whodunit" and then nicely wraps all the loose ends. A terrific read!

Summary: NOT MY CUP OF TEA
Review: I found the story to be too silly, sarcastic, unrealistic, and contrived. Life's too short to waste it reading dumb books.

Summary: Mystery & Romance All In One
Review: ...
If you like mysteries and romances you get both in this book.
I thought the book started slow but picked up as it went.
Maddie (the main character) learns that honesty is better than lies.
This is a good book and will keep you turning the pages.

Summary: Mediocre Suspense and Humor...Quirky Tale-3 1/2 stars...
Review: I was recommended this book for something funny and dashed with some suspense. It was okay, definately quirky. It was very slow at the beginning, but it did pick up near the middle enough to keep me reading. The humor was good and well done, but just didn't get me going like I thought it would. I can't put my finger on the problem. The suspense was okay, but not really convincing. All in all it was a satisfying read and I did pick up her other book to try her again, but this one just didn't grab me as I thought it would, considering the reviews.

~Maddie Faraday's life would be perfect, if it weren't for a few minor problems ... her cheating husband was cheating AGAIN ... her suspicious daughter was listening on her phone conversations...her mother was the town gossip...her best friend of 30 or more years was keeping something secret and now the guy she had lost her virginity to almost 20 years ago has come blazing into town again.

The tiny town of Frog Point, a quiet, quaint and nosey small town in rural Ohio had the normal gossip, but now a shocking murder has happened and the town's is buzzing! Can Maddie's life get any worse? Yes, she could be accused of the murder for one thing, she can run out of chocolate and her first love from 20 years ago can come knocking! How had her 'normal' life gone so wrong in just 3 weeks?

A fun tale of how a woman betrayed finds love and laughter again and the bonding of two women are everything. Maddie needs to drop the 'goodgirl' facade and find her 'badgirl' lurking inside, can the old flame help her find it and also help her straighten out her messy life in the process? Or will brownies do the trick? There are many laugh-out-loud moments, but I found the story too thin. I can't put my finger on where exactly I lost interest, but it started near the beginning. Ms. Crusie did a great job and it shows, it just wasn't what I expected, but certainly an entertaining book.

Summary: good book, fun to read
Review: Tell me lies was a fun book to read. I enjoyed it a lot. The characters were very real and entertaining.

Summary: Amusing and Unchallenging
Review: Poor Maddie Faraday. She finds some obscene underwear in her husband's car and backs up to divorce him -- and then her whole life hits the fan as the town's tongues begin wagging. First, there's that mysterious money in their safe-deposit box, then his erratic, alcoholic, and uncharacteristically violent behavior at home... and her former high school paramour returns with hormones raging. And suddenly (though not totally unexpectedly), the husband turns up dead. Who killed him? What was he up to? Where did that money come from? The town is abuzz, and poor Maddie is suspect number one.

Okay, the story isn't totally original, and the author's not inconsequential efforts to populate Frog Point with charming eccentrics at times fade into into predictable caricatures, this story still does several things well. First, the author realizes that "real people" require a simple and uncomplicated writing style, which she's nails perfectly. Also, Maddie herself is believable and earns my compassion, even if the boyfriend (a surprisingly articulate though occasionally brooding modern day Heathcliff without the issues) does, at times, seem rather too good to be true.

Also, I really like Maddie's best friend Treva and her family, as well as the depiction of young Emily Farraday, the blameless innocent daughter amidst all the chaos. Maddie's mother and grandmother, while valuable for the insight and challenge that they present to our heroine, do teeter off the cliff of believability at times in spite of their authentic homespun good sense and inclination to gossip.

Basically, this book is entertaining. Beyond that, it's not much. But for a book to entertain is an accomplishment, so I would recommend this to someone who enjoys a good laugh and has the time to indulge in occasionally witty if unchallenging fare.

Summary: What a fun book!
Review: A few weeks ago, my mom lent me "Welcome to Tempation" - I've read through that and three other books (as soon as I can get my hands on them). Crusie writes the perfect Summer Read - funny, sassy, great characters, with the occasional suspense or mystery thrown in. I think Maddie and CL may be my favorite characters yet - Maddie's life is a mess, but she's pulls it out like a trooper. CL is the typical Crusie hero - big, strong, very (very!) ..., but funny and vulnerable too. He's the one who has been carrying the torch, not Maddie - a very nice twist on the typical book. Of course there are parts of the book that are just so out there (the Drake farm incident on the grass) but that just adds to the fun.

Summary: Murder, Greed and Lust -- Small Town Style
Review: "Tell Me Lies" is a tale of murder, greed and lust, small town style. Maddie has been the town sweetheart for nearly 40 years, but after finding a pair of black lace panties in her husband's car, she decides it's time to shake things up, and the results are hilarious! .... Jennifer Crusie's novels are quick witted, hilarious and down to earth romantic. If you enjoy "Tell Me Lies" try "Fast Women".

Summary: Tedious Reading(blah!)
Review: I thank God that I am not, nor do I know anyone, like the main character, Maddie. She was more immature than her 8yo daughter Emily, a bad example to mothers and wives everywhere, and an uninteresting character as a whole. This entire story revolves around the "what will the neighbors think?" mentality. Maddie lives in unreasonable fear of what her mother will say about what she does and is in such denial of her entire life... Even C.L.'s unbelievable claim of hopeful love couldn't save this book. The one star was for Jennifer Crusie's effort and actually getting this book published.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A slightly flawed but still fun effort from Crusie
Review: There's no such thing as a bad Jennifer Crusie novel. All of the Crusie trademarks are here in spades - witty dialouge, great leading characters, love scenes that manage to be both steamy and hilarious at the same time. No one combines humor and romance better than Crusie. No doubt about it, you will enjoy this book. However, I must admit that as enjoyable as "Tell Me Lies" is, I think it is the weakest of Crusie's books. The female lead's life is so out of control - Maddie thinks her husband is cheating on her and preparing to kidnap their child - that I found it a more than a little difficult to believe that she was able to start a romance with her long-lost high school fling. I don't demand absolute plausibility in my romance novels, but this was just too much. The secret of this book is engaging in a little willing suspension of disbelief and just appreciate the humor in watching Maddie cope with her increasing bizarre and frequently funny life.
