Rating: Summary: Boring & Trite - Lose the Bible Quotes! Review: I tried but could not get through this book and quit about halfway through - as much as I like Lisa Kleypas normally, I just couldn't get into the heroine in this book. She's very religious and quotes the bible regularly throughout the novel - not something you expect from an Avon Romance. I think Kleypas tried to make her character reflect the background in which she was brought up - she portrays the culture of Russia at the time as very religious and devout - but it just turned me off. Maybe she comes around and loses the religious piety, but I didn't have the patience to find out. I also was annoyed by the "borrowed" plotline at the beginning where she fakes her death by taking a poison that gives her the appearance of death - right out of Romeo and Juliet. I'd try some of her other good novels like 'Dreaming of You' and not waste your time or money on this one.
Rating: Summary: Sweet, tender romance Review: I was surprised when I saw some of the negative reviews of this book. It remains one of my all time favorites. The heroine is a young woman with a terrible secret, afraid to trust anyone and desperately in need of a hero. The hero is strong and very lonely - he desperately needs someone to be a hero for. As each of them learns to trust and to love, a really sweet romance develops. Their relationship (for me) embodies everything that I read romances for - a deep, committed, mutually respectful relationship, with a dash of irresistable sexual attraction, and a sense of a special, timeless love.
Rating: Summary: Midnight Angel Review: Ms. Kleypas is a superb writer, but I didn't like the characters she created very much. Luke was too closed up for a huge part of the book and Tasia was just too impulsive for her own good. The back cover blurb reads: "A noblewoman of frail beauty and exotic mystery fakes her own death to escape the gallows. And now she must flee. In disguise and under a false identity, she finds unexpected sanctuary in the arms of a handsome and arrogant yet gallant British lord--who must defy society to keep her safe...and overcome a tragic past to claim her as his own." Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: Ms. Kleypas writes so well, it's almost frightening! I'm slowly working my way through all of her books and I will be disappointed when I have read everything that she has written. This particular book, "Midnight Angel", is so stunningly well-conceived, well-written, and well-plotted that you will fly through the pages in no time flat! The author mixes outrageous situations, lovable characters, a fascinating setting, and a sprinkle of dark magic with a deft and skillful hand. The characters seem so real that you might swear to yourself that you have actually met them when all is said and done! In addition, Ms. Kleypas' dedication to lively and unique historical details is just plain fun. This book is more than just a page-turner -- it's a remarkable achievement. Don't miss it, or you'll miss out!
Rating: Summary: Hook meets Star Wars? Review: O.k., so what is up with the hook?! I mean I felt like I was re-living Empire Strikes Back, only this time it was another Luke who was losing his hand. Coincidence? Creepy, forced, and a little over-the-top. If you like Kleypas, I would recommend you read 'Someone to Watch Over Me,' or 'Dreaming of You.'
Rating: Summary: The worst Lisa Kleypas novel I've read yet! Review: The first Lisa Kleypas novel I read was 'Suddenly You' and that was absolutely wonderful. 'Dreaming of You' was great too. But Midnight Angel was horrible. I strongly advise anyone thinking of reading this book to borrow it from a friend or the library, because it isn't worth paying for. Lisa Kleypas has incrediable talent, but this book did not do her any justice.
Rating: Summary: One of the most romantic love-stories ever !!! Review: The only thing that's missing here is Luke's left hand (I guess It's just me, wanting to see a perfect hero). Other than that, there's really nothing to complain about. The love scenes are wonderful, the plot is interesting, and the ending is satisfactory. I've read it several times and still adore it.
Rating: Summary: Kleypas' worst novel Review: The potential was there, but it never happened. I actually struggled at times to finish it. Why? It was boring...deadly dull. Kleypas writes as though she's trying to cram in everything she's learned about Russia and somehow manage a novel out of it. The characters never really come alive -- the secondary characters, the hero's daughter and the heroine's dangerous cousin, are more engaging than the romantic leads. Plus, I never bought into their feelings for each other. It was a mish-mash that lacked heart and emotional pull. I found myself mentally rolling my eyes or grumbling in annoyance as I'd reread the same phrases over and over throughout the book. And the love scenes? Clinical and uninspiring; worse, they seem to be in there just to be there--they do not flow from the story. Considering there's an overabundance of them, that's very damning. Avoid this book and get one of Lisa's other books; most are excellent, but this one's a dud.
Rating: Summary: Started Out Interesting, Then Got Boring Review: The premise sounds interesting but the execution doesn't work. Tasia is accused of murdering her fiancee and,to avoid the hangman's noose, fakes her own death and flees Russia. With the help of her friends, she establishes herself as a governess in the home of a handsome widowed nobleman, Luke Stokehurst. First of all, I really didn't care much for Tasia or Luke. Tasia is touted as being very religious and sheltered. Yet she lets Luke into her bed just a little to easily (they aren't married) and then he has to fight her tooth and nail to get her to marry him. She ddoes a lot of other things that contradict her basic personality too. Luke is the standard issue Mr. Noncommitment arrogant nobleman. The only thing that makes him diffirent from every other arrogant nobleman is that he is an amputee (missing his left hand) My Favorite character was Emma, the sweet natured, awkard daughter of Luke and his first wife. That is how lack-luster the main couple is. Their relationship happens way to fast. Luke and Tasia maybe have one honest conversation between them where they aren't shouting and really bonding and suddenly they're in love and sleeping together. The rest of the time, Tasia is argueing with him or trying to guard her secrets. And an EVIL MISTRESS(TM) is thrown in there for extra measure. Eventually Tasia finds herself back in Russian costody, and Luke must find the real killer. I finished this book but I was so bored by the end, I really can't remember how the day is saved.
Rating: Summary: Lisa Kleypass is wonderful!!!!! Review: This book is definately one of my top 10 favorites. I could not put it down from the very beginning. I would certainly like to see more of Ms. Kleypas's work. The sequel to this is "Prince of Dreams", it is also a must read.
