Rating: Summary: wonderful ("génial" in french) Review: I read this book (my third of Linda Howard) and still I can't keep it out of my mind : this book is terrific and wonderful. The relationship between Roanna and Webb is well described with passion, torment and fear... Of course, there is a story about incest but it doesn't bother me very long, and the bad guy is really a bad guy in the story. I love the end of this book and I like the love scenes between the two when they share their love with no restrain... Buy this book and like me, you'll become a Howard maniac (I bought all her books by now)... At the same level of SHADES OF TWILIGHT, I'll put AFTER THE NIGHT (always by Linda Howard)...
Rating: Summary: Beautiful. Review: I read this book when it first came out in 1996. I bought it last month, because I remembered it as a soul-touching, beautiful novel. I wasn't disappointed. I had forgotten though, the power of the characters, who draw you in, make you love them or hate them, who live in you long after you finish reading. It has the markings of a truely superb story.... it makes you want to be there, it shows you the strengths in a hero or heroine, and it makes YOU want to be more like that person. This is a novel that will touch your heart. May it find a place of honor on every bookshelf ;)
Rating: Summary: Truley a beautiful story!!! Review: I totally agree with the reader from the U.K., this is a wonderful and beautiful love story. The relationship between Webb and Roanna was not incestus as they were distant cousins. This story struck deep cords in me, I had honest reactions when reading it. Wistfulness at the love between the two of them, disgust at the relationship between Jessie and her father, and joy at the way the story ended up. This is the second Linda Howard book that I have read, the first being All the Queens Men. But this story is really staying with me. I immediatly ordered Kill and Tell, The Touch of Fire, and Now You See Her, Now You Don't. Thank You, Linda for writing such a wonderful book, you have earned your self another true fan.
Rating: Summary: Genetics issue Review: I wanted to take a moment to respond to some of the reviewers who found the idea of Roanna and Webb being cousins, even though they were lovers planning to marry, a little creepy. As someone with a little background in genetics, I can tell you that two people who share only great grandparents in common are not very closely related genetically; hardly more than two strangers. So relax; their relationship is not incestuous.
Rating: Summary: PEOPLE, PLEASE, CHILL ABOUT THE INCEST Review: I won't bother to tell the story because it's explained in a lot of the other reviews. I felt I had to review this book for one main reason. Shades of Twilight is a wonderful story, the best Linda Howard book I have read and I can't understand the fuss about Webb and Roanna being related. Incest is a relationship between parent and child, brother and sister, but nowhere at all, in no religious book or oterwise does it say a relationship between cousins is incestuous. I thought Webb and Roanna's story was beautiful because they truly love each other and by negatively judging their relationship because of a mistaken idea of who should and should not love, I think you belittle the depth of that emotion (no offence to anyone). I think the book should just be taken as a beautiful example of enduring love and not be tainted by any prejudice. Oh and for the readers who seemed to think it was an example of Southern life, I think you should try and remember that the South was the setting but it could happen anywhere.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: I've just recently started reading Linda Howard books. This one is great especially the depth of her character, Roanna Davenport. There is a good mixture of suspense and romance in this book. Nice to see that Roanna hung in there for many, many years before she got her man.
Rating: Summary: Linda Howard..... Review: If you can get past the cousin and incest thing it was a wonderful story.I could deal with the cousin thing, but the other I had a problem with,it was not necessary.
Rating: Summary: Just plain good read! Review: In this novel linda howard explores not only the intricate family and societal ties in a rural southern community but also the emotions and vulnerabilities of a young girl. Roanna the heroine in this book starts out as an insecure 7 year old who had just lost her parents. As a result she goes to live with her grandmother, and two cousines jessie and webb. As she grows she finds disaproval at every turns thus becomes a shy, akward tomboy, with a case ove hero worship/love for her older cousine Webb. Unfortunately, while he is kind to her, he is atracyted to thaeir other cousine Jessie, who is not very nice, as is revealed later. Roanna's feelings for Webb set off a series of events that result in Webb leaving for several years and jessie murdered. Because Webb left Roanna went through a change and withdrew from her family and friends, until she convinced Webb to come back. He did come back, to try and find out what had changed Roanna so much. He tried to fix his relation ship with her and the rest of his family, all the while, trying to find out who killed Jessie and was now trying to kill him and Roanna. This book is a thoroly good book. I was caught up in it from page one. The twists and turns and surprise ending earns it a place as a great mystery, but the skill with wich the characters were portrayed, add a new dimention. Aside from that my favorite part was how well Ms. Howard expressed Roanna's vulnerabilities and her complex relationship within her family and with Web. If there were a higher rating than 5 stars i would give it to this book.
Rating: Summary: it was good Review: like a many of LH books and this one was one of them. hero was very caring although he had his rough sides. The plot was great. It held you waiting for what would happen next. I like that there was a lot of focus on the hero and heroine's relationship because sometimes in a romance suspense the author forgets the romance. The only thing I didn't like is that the heroine was a little too fragile she could of fought back a little more.
Rating: Summary: Shades of Twilight Review: Linda Howard has produced an engaging story between two people who've known each other a long time. If the story just stuck to Roanna and Webb, it would have been great. However, the father/daughter incest thing was unneccessary and TRULY revolting. It could have been hinted at and everyone would have got the message--but to actually describe an incestuous sex scene goes way too far! This sort of depravity is something I can do without. I would suggest reading something else. Hopefully her other books aren't like this.
