Rating: Summary: A fast-paced exciting read, BUT... Review: ... I just couldn't get past the fact that Webb and Roanna were second cousins. To me, the relationship always seemed vaguely incestuous. I have second cousins that I am not even particularly close to (much less grew up with!) and I can't even imagine beginning a sexual relationship with my male second cousin. The very idea repels me.Given that I can't help but see Roanna's and Webb's relationship as incestuous, I can't fathom why their baby caused such joy while another child of incest in the story was deemed an "abomination." The incest is the abomination, NEVER the child. Like another reviewer, I was also turned off by the execution of the villain by Webb, with Roanna's approval. I find it hard to believe that real-life cops would have turned a blind eye to it like the cops in this story. That said, this novel was fast-paced, exciting, and engrossing. I never even suspected Jessie's killer. Be prepared to stomach a great deal, but if you don't have anything else to read, go ahead and try SHADES OF TWILIGHT.
Rating: Summary: Linda Howard knows what romance readers want! Review: A story of such passion and heartache you won't want to put it down! Howard combines love, romance, and thrilling suspense to create a powerful tale of intertwining lives that you enter from page one. Don't miss this one and all her many other passionate books.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable read, but incestuous relationships are disturbing. Review: As a romance novel, this is enjoyable. However, the relationships between the cousins, as well as the father and daughter, make the story less "comfortable." It is more disturbing that the novel presents an atmosphere of approval for the romance between the cousins. However, even more disturbing is that some readers apparently feel this type of relationship is characteristic of the South. As a born and raised Southern, I can assure you that I have never known this to be normal or accepted behavior in the modern South. Though I have enjoyed Linda Howard novels, I was somewhat surprised, and a little insulted, to find this incestuous relationship so openly accepted and celebrated in this particular novel.
Rating: Summary: Howard is great, but her other works are better. Review: Even though "Shades of Twilight" is less than perfect, it will still be a welcome read for Linda Howard fans. Howard continues to do what she does best - deliver intense, steamy modern romances with a hint of mystery to keep the plot moving along. The core romance is strong, and as usual, the hero is an appealing combination of tender caring and strong masculinity. My biggest problem with this book was that the heroine was just too passive - not the spunky, independent modern woman you'd expect in a Linda Howard novel. I also wasn't crazy about the cliche Southern family all living together under one big roof with distant cousins pairing up. That doesn't really work in a contemporary novel, but Howard comes close to pulling it off. Despite my complaints, I did enjoy the book, and you will too if you have enjoyed other Linda Howard novels. However, if you aren't familiar with Howard's work, better to start with one of her better novels. "After the Night", "Dream Man" or any of the MacKenzie saga would be great choices.
Rating: Summary: teriffic, heartbreaking, sultry and imposible not to love. Review: Every time I buy a Linda Howard I make sure to prepare myself for a GREAT LOVE STORY! This book was no exeption.Rhoanna is a wonderfull, deep character whom I truly felt for. And as usual I fell madly in love with the books hero.{ I do it every time }. If you don't love this book. Then you need help.
Rating: Summary: Steamy, sexy intrigue Review: For a reason I cannot put my finger on, this is my favourite of all the Linda Howard novels I have read (I've read most, and as a warning to all others who are only just beginning to read Linda Howard, STAY AWAY from the ones she wrote in the early 80s - all her best books begin with Lady of the West and the time period following). In Shades of Twilight, we have a real heroine and hero with real problems. It is a joy to see Roanna find her strength, and not just from Wade, but from within. Granted, this is not your usual romance, and the incest scenes are not for the faint-hearted, but this book glows with the glory of two people finding that they are meant to be together.
Rating: Summary: Riveting suspense and scorching passion Review: Hailed by many as one of her most audacious romance novels, Shades of Twilight is indubitably Linda Howard's most ambitious attempt in creating a chilling mystery that will keep you riveted. Roanna Davenport struggles with her budding yearning for her cousin Webb Tallant - and when her sister and his soon-to-be wife Jessie dies - Roanna is plagued with guilt while Webb becomes a suspect in the foul play. The tragedy has muted the vivacious Roanna and sculpt her into a vulnerable soul while Webb leaves his desired Alabama estate in cold disgrace, becoming a hard man. Ten years later on the account of her grandmother, Roanna finds Webb and brings him back to helm over the management. Yet the killer remains scot-free and no doubt will take this reunion to silence and frame Webb all over again. Shades of Twilight is a lacerating experience that will keep you riveted through webs of deceit, incest and mystery. The resuscitation of Roanna's lost spirits through Webb's love will tear you asunder with its poignancy. Ms. Howard creates scorching passion that triumphs with tender emotions and developed characters. Shades of Twilight has established Ms. Howard as a master of suspense and romance.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book. Review: I am not a crier. It's not the way I react, but I cried at this book. The charcters emotions are wrenching. Linda Howard makes you feel what her creations feel. It is unbeliveable. A must read.
Rating: Summary: ANOTHER WINNER FOR LINDA HOWARD Review: I can't believe that I almost didn't buy this book. What a loss that would've been. 'Shades of Twilight' is another good book by LH. With its combination of Love, passion, mystery and scandal you have one great book. The climax at the end of the story will floor you with shock. The romance between Roanna and Webb will make you believe that good things do come to those who wait. Sit down, grab a glass of iced tea and get ready for one roller coaster ride that you will never forget! Two other books by Linda Howard you will have to read is 'Dream Man' and 'After the Night'.Keep the oxygen tank handy.
Rating: Summary: All in the Family Review: I grew up in the south, but I had a real problem with the second cousins marrying. Yuk! Two people who had gradmothers who were sisters and grew up in the same house, growin up and falling in love is gross. If I grew up with a cousin in the same house, they would be like a brother to me, not a love interest! I thought the book had way too many incestuous relationships and was disturbing. Family is family and you don't marry each other!
