Rating: Summary: No Maybe about it. Review: There is absolutely no "maybe" about it. Jane Green and her perpetually flawed heroine have done it again. Both have taken the romantic comedy/chicklit type of book and elevated it to a whole new level. This is an incredibly frothy and absorbing read that you not only can, but will want to read at one sitting. The characters sparkle, the dialogue as always is very witty. Jane Green has really carved a niche for herself in this genre, she is not to be missed!!Mr. Maybe tells the story of 27-year old Libby Mason who is tired of looking for Mr, Right for right now. She wants to settle down with a great guy like her best friend, Jules and permanently remove herself from the pain in the search of romance and everlasting love. The problem is that Libby has always thought that her perfect mate will have to be extremely rich to keep her in the style in which she wants to become more accustomed. Libby wants to become one of the "ladies who lunch", get their hair done once a week, and indulge in plenty of retail therapy. And she's not going to get there with her struggling writer/boyfriend, Nick. He may have the beautiful body, the ability to make Libby laugh and plenty of sexual prowess, but he just doesn't have the bankroll. Enter Ed, one of London's most eligible, weathiest, albeit stodgiest bachelor's. Libby must decide if the money is enough, if the money is what's going to keep her happy for the rest of her life because Ed is severly lacking in all the areas where Nick excelled. We are drawn in to Libby's life and are forced to just hold on for the duration of this widly entertaing, wickedly funny ride! Jane Green can't write fast enough for me. I love her style and her wit. For those who have not yet discovered Jane Green, they are in for a huge treat with each and every novel and I envy them, what with all the wonderful reading experiences they have before them. I was going to wait for Jane Green's "Babyville" to come out in paperback, but I don't think I can.
Rating: Summary: LOVED IT!!! Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The first few chapters were tough to get through because I was sure I knew how the rest of the book was going to play out, but I was pleasantly surprised by the plot twists. Okay, sure, you know what the sequence of events will ultimately be, but the reasons for the changes were what surprised me.... I know this isn't the most articulate review, but I don't want to give anything away. Read it for yourself, then you'll see what I mean!
Rating: Summary: LOOKING FOR A BEACH BOOK - THIS IS IT! Review: This is such a great beach book - its fun and a quick read! Libby is looking for Mr. Right, but her past relationships have been all Mr. Wrongs. What is causing this? Is it she looking for the "too" perfect man? Well that depends on what your idea what Mr. Right should be. Libby also seems to have a bit a problem of who she is as well - as it is put in the book by her good friend Jules (who Libby thinks has the perfect marriage), she is a bit of a chameleon herself! Libby tends to convert the way she acts/dresses to whom she dates throughout the book. On her quest for Mr. Right she does come across of few possible Mr. Maybes - You'll have to get the book to see what happens, no secrets from me!
Rating: Summary: Maybe Not Review: This book is a knockoff of Bridget Jones' Diary...and not nearly as good. The heroine, Libby, is so shallow and mercenary that even though she recognizes her shallowness near the end of the book, one can't quite forgive her. It is utterly impossible to like her. Although there are humorous moments, there are just as many moments that are almost embarrassing to read. Libby's sometimes crude thoughts, about her lover and about her mother in particular, are probably meant to portray her as endearingly honest, but instead she comes off as meanspirited. The sex scenes, obligatory in this chick-lit genre, strike me as a bit clinical. Libby provides us with a post-coital report card every time, which gets very old, very fast, but we have Sex and The City to thank for that, I guess. Still, when Libby berates her lover to his face for his awkward, juvenile lovemaking and premature ejaculation, she doesn't exactly inspire sympathy in THIS reader. Ms. Green is a competent enough writer that I'm willing to pick up one of her other books and give it a try, but Mr. Maybe was a disappointment, no maybe about it.
Rating: Summary: It's really funny Review: I was looking for some book that lighten my heart. I wanted to read a book that makes me laugh a lot. This book was great! I couldn't stop reading it.
Rating: Summary: Loads of Fun Review: Since I had my baby 4 months ago, I have discovered I no longer have the ability to sit and read books that require a lot of thought-feels too much like work. I've never been a fluff reader before, but I missed reading so much that I let a friend talk me into reading The Nanny Diaries and since then have become addicted to fun books, though I'm slightly embarrassed to tell people what I'm reading these days!!! Eventually I discovered Jane Green, who is a British Author of the "Bridget Jones" Genre. Eventually I made it to Mr. Maybe. I will try not to totally spoil the book for anyone who may want to read it after my review... The Plot This book is about a woman by the name of Libby Mason. Libby is a 27 year-old Public Relations Professional-successful but not amazingly so. She is deeply committed to shopping. And her friends. And her job-as it provides the funds for shopping and going out with her friends. And finding a rich husband - so she would no longer need her job to go shopping and would always have a friend around. In the beginning of the book Libby meets Nick, through a mutual friend. He is handsome, sexy, and an unpublished writer on "on the dole" (welfare for Americans). There is an instant attraction and Libby begins a "purely sexual" (as he is not rich or "smart"-British for stylish-enough for Libby) relationship with him. The first quarter of the book or so follows the sexual exploits of the couple, and Libby's attempts to not fall in love with the oh-so-sweet-and-sexy Nick---I bet you know what happens there!!! To get over Nick , Libby gets back to her partying ways, and before she knows it is in a relationship with Financial Wiz Ed McMann (isn't this a similar name to the old guy from that Blooper's show???). Ed is a little older, very rich, not awful looking-except for his moustache, nice enough-though boring, and head-over-heels-in-love with Libby. Libby convinces herself she could love and marry Ed, in-spite of his moustache and personality and bedroom deficiencies. Libby eventually needs to decide if she will settle for Ed, or look for someone with all of Nick's qualities and Ed's money. I wont tell you what happens next... Why I enjoyed this book I simply couldn't put it down. It was one of those books where I couldn't wait to see what happened-even though it was predictable and I knew along what would happen I needed to know how it happened. I read this book in 2 days and actually looked forward to early morning nursing sessions just to get back to it. I started fights with my husband so he'd leave me alone and let me read... It was a quick, fun, easy book. It did not feel like work. In spite of being quick and easy, it had some depth and the characters were well developed. Green explores Libby's history and relationships with detail, so that she is a real person and not just a shallow chick that wants someone with money. Libby's conversation with her friends and family reveal a lot about who she is. The characters were all likeable. I didn't even always know what guy I was routing for-neither of them were jerks they were just very different. I enjoy these "single-girl-looking-for-love" books. Though I am married, I was single for years and went through a lot of yucky relationships. I can relate to these women. And I can live vicariously through them and go back to my partying, hard-drinking, serial dating days!!! I read for escapism, and these kinds of books let me escape from mommy-wifedom for a while (Not that I'd really want to give it up ever!!) What I didn't like so much Green's books are all very formula. If this is the first one you read it will not be a problem-but I have read 4 of her books in the last couple months so they are all starting to feel the same. I've got one left to read, and I think I'm gonna wait a while. I won't tell you so much about the formula-as it may spoil the plot for you. Suffice to say there were several occurrences in this book (particularly with the sub-plots) that found themselves in every one of Green's books. The women in the book were all thin, pretty and nice. That always annoys me-can't they be normal women who still manage to find love?? Libby, her best friend Jules, her co-worker pal Jo, her client/friend Amanda and her friend Sal are all perfect. Not a witch in the bunch. Not a fat chick. All different types, but all pretty and relatively nice-even the one who seems like she'll be witchy isn't really. Barf. Obviously, it was not a brilliant literary masterpiece. But I didn't expect it to be, that is why I read it-I am saving those for when my daughter is about 20-then I'll be back at the Giller and Booker lists. Rating: Summary: GREAT, AWESOME, FANTASTIC READ!! Review: "Mr. Maybe" was my second Jane Green novel and it was so much better than the first. After reading "Jemima J", an okay novel, I was a little hesistant to pick up "Mr. Maybe". A friend was kind enough to let me borrow the book and I kept in my room for weeks before deciding to read a few pages. After I started, I could not stop. I read "Mr. Maybe" in one day. - no television - no nothing. There wasn't anything that could tear me away. If you are a single woman, you will definitely relate to the trials that the main character, Libby, goes through. Although the shallowness of her contemplating marrying Ed, the rich (but not so handsome) bachelor, made it a little hard to swallow. The interaction of Libby with her annoying mother was very funny. Another interesting portion of "Mr. Maybe" was Libby's bestfriend Jules who seemed to have the perfect marriage but a slight indiscretion turns that world upside down. The-grass-is-always-greener-on-the-other-side subplot was amazing. Being single you always envy your friend's who are married, but the author Jane Green made me realize that everything is not always what it seems. Saving the best for last....Libby's love (or lust) for Nick kept me glued. Although you always have an inkling how these books will turn out, I couldn't wait to see how Green would work this out for Libby and Nick. The chemistry between these two characters lept off the pages. Their comical and comfortable interaction was so true to life. Bottom line: Go out and get this book. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down... Review: I was walking around the bookstore looking for a summer read and read the description for this book. It looked interesting so I began to read it right in the bookstore. I was 4 chapters into the book before I knew it. The characters pulled me in; I felt as though I could relate to them. I found that I began to judge every decision made by Libby. I was beginning to put myself in her position and tried to think what I would do if I was her. Would I marry rich like my dream or marry for love? I kept rooting for Nick the whole book and couldn't wait to find out how it ended. The ending is how it should have been- love wins every time. Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, but this was a great book and a great love story. A very easy read and entertaining.
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Review: This book was great! I couln't put it down. Would definitely recommend to anyone. I couldn't wait to see what came next. Definitely a must-have!
Rating: Summary: Good book... Review: I just finished MR MAYBE two days ago and I found the book to be ok. I was rooting for Nick and Libby, although I was a little annoyed with the Ed storyline. It seemed to drag on and I found myself saying, "This character (ED) is so repulsive it makes me wanna throw up!" I know that Ed is an important character because it eventually leads Libby back to Nick, but it just seemed to drag on. Mr Maybe was an ok read, maybe I just expected something totally different.
