Summary: disappointing rehash of 2 films & beneath author's ability
Review: From one of my very favorite authors, a real dud. Kleypas does nothing original with the same plot as "The Return of Martin Guerre" and "Sommersby", the films. The hero and heroine are unbelievably perfect whereas all villains are undiluted evil. The heroine grated on my nerves and at every turn made a decision that made no sense and was against her best interests (until the very end where it should be too late and isn't, making the resolution highly unbelievable). Perhaps the most unbelievable legal proceeding imaginable (I am a lawyer). I cannot believe that this came from the same author who created Derek Craven, Logan Scott and Lawless Lily. Buy and collect this author's backlist as all of her other titles are outstanding! I have kept them all.

Summary: Sommersby Revisited - This Time Happily Ever After
Review: Lisa Kleypas did her revision on the movie Sommersby (which itself is based on a book which title I forgot) in this happily-ever-after book. It is an easy read, detailing a woman's confusion after her supposedly-dead husband showed up on her doorstep, new and improved.

Anyone who remembered the original book or Sommersby will find this book very familiar as most of this story remains faithful to the original.

However halfway through the story I really get annoyed with the heroine's constant "Don't-touch-me-I-hate-sex-but-hey-he-surely-looks-good" attitude. It gets very tiring when she kept this attitude up to the two-third of the book. And I find the other characters unworthy of Ms Kleypas' talent - surely she can do better than these stereotypical characters? i.e. the abusive and evil husband of poor sister-in-law, abused woman who refuses to leave abusive hubby because "she loves him" (give me a break), and two meanest characters to ever play Evil Stepmummy and Stepdaddy to our heroine. I wish Ms Kleypas has created more three-dimensional characters.

As it is, I'd give this book three and a half-stars.

Summary: A great romance!
Review: I was lucky enough to be asked by Lisa's editor to quote this book and loved it. The story is very compelling, the characters truly sympathetic and the plot was just great--with lots twists and turns and surprises. Just wonderful!

Summary: Kleypas will one day be a superstar
Review: Hunter never expected to be treated as a pariah by his own family when he allegedly returned from the dead. Over a year ago, Hunter, Lord Hawksworth was supposed to have died off of the coast of India in a vicious shipwreck. Now, a man has returned to England claiming to be Hunter. Lara, Hunter's spouse, is unhappy to lose her freedom and loathed to return to an iceberg of a marriage. She enjoys her idyll life in the countryside, helping orphans. The present Lord Hawksworth, Haunter's Uncle Arthur and his wife Janet do not want to give up the wealth and social position they have gained with Hunter's death.

When the man claiming to be Hunter finally meets Lara, he informs her that he plans top make her his wife again. He also knwos secrets that only Hunter would know and has birthmarks in the right places. However, the Hunter Lara despises is not this warm passionate man. Still, even as she falls in love with him, she wonders if he is a con man pulling off an elaborate hoax?

Regency England is never in better hands than when Lisa Kleypas takes the reader there. In her latest novel, a brilliant retelling of THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE, readers and the novel's other characters will struggle with the question of who Hunter truly is. The story line is well written and the lead protagonists come across as well as (if not better than) the original tale, play, or even the Gepardieu movie. Even though her romances are memorable and totally unique, what makes Ms. Kleypas one of the best historical romance authors in the genre today is her ability to bring to life the era that she is describing. The proof is in the books, STRANGER IN MY ARMS, BECAUSE YOUR MINE, or THEN CAME YOU.

Summary: Better than "sommersby".
Review: When I started this book and realize its plot I thought of fore-going it but for some reason it held me and I continued to read it. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is must better........and although the beginning premise of whether Hunter is really her husband or an imposter is not unique, the twists by LK make this story unique. How anyone can see the "heroine" as manipulative, using sex, etc.. is beyond me as nothing could be farther from the truth. Her motives are very clear cut all the way through and "Hunter" acknowledges her honesty. The "pull" of the book for me was Hunter, a tormented man who deserves the peace he evolves into.

Summary: Don't Read the End First
Review: I know, we all like to glance back there, even when we know it is a happy ending, just to reassure ourselves it all work out. Well although by the reviews you may have guessed the answer, just let the author get you there. This book is well worth the read - it's fun, intriguing and you end up pulling for two versions of the same hero! The heroine is a little too unsure of herself considering she ends up as a strong independent woman, but it's not so misdrawn that it'll annoy you.

Summary: Average Read
Review: I love all types of books. Mystery Suspense Horror, etc., and I am also a sucker for romances. Now when I read romance I do not expect the plot to be as believable as a mystery or suspense story but I do expect good romance. This novel was none of the above. Lara's husband is dead, and she has been relegated to a windy beatup cabin on the property by the selfish snotty relatives who took over the family money after her husband's death. Surprise her husband is alive and back in the picture. The rest of the story involves is he or is he not her husband? Can she trust him? Can she love him? Also, when she has doubts, does she confront her husband the man she loves, no she turns to the mean selfish snooty relatives that she lived with before and then is in shock when they treat her shabbily. Also she doesn't want to have sex with her husband and at every opportunity tries to throw his mistress at him but when she finally gets them together gets upset. This heroine is very annoying in this story. Her actions are silly and its hard to have any sympathy for her. I like Lisa Kleypas's novels, but this is definitely not one of her best.
