Rating: Summary: wOnDeFuL! ;) Review: As of today, THE SHERBROOKE BRIDE, is my favorite novel by Catherine Coulter. Honestly, after I read MAD JACK, I was thinking about giving up on her books. But I remembered that I enjoyed reading THE HELLION, as well recalled that THE SHERBROOKE BRIDE is the first book in the Bride trilogy, and decided to give it a try. And you know what? I enjoyed it tremendously! Douglas Sherbrooke, Earl of Northcliffe is twenty-eight and believes it has come time for him to marry. He remembers the VERY beautiful Melissande Chambers, and believes her to be the perfect wife. However, when Douglas goes off to France and sends his cousin, Tony to marry him to Melissande by proxy, everything goes wrong from that point on. Tony decides to marry Melissande himself, and marry Douglas to Melissande's younger sister, Alexandra Chambers. Alexandra has loved Douglas for three years, since she was fifteen. When Douglas returns home to his estate, excited and hoping to see Melissande waiting for him in his bedchamber, he comes across Alexandra who is total stranger to him. He soon finds out the truth from Tony, and begins treating Alex horribly. Near the beginning of the story, Alexandra puts up with Douglas' mean insults, hoping in her heart that Douglas will come to accept her. But gearing near the middle of the story, she loses hope and tries (many times, for your information) to return home, but Douglas always manages to stop her. ;) Awwwwwww. Soon the plot thickens, when Douglas' enemies from France come to England to harass him. However that is not the main plot of the story, you only get a glimpse of that near the beginning and the end of the story. The focus of the novel is, 'How does Douglas eventually fall in love with his wife?' That is the mystery, and the only way to find out is: Read the book. =) I loved this story because of the plot, the dialogue and the characters. Alexandra is very sweet, and I was kind of disappointed in Douglas at first, because he treated her so unkindly and kept comparing her to her TOO beautiful sister. But in the end, Douglas definitely makes up for his mistakes....
Rating: Summary: The Sherbrooke Bride Review: At the tender age of fifteen, my sister, D'Ann, handed me my first romance novel. (Thank you, D'Ann!) In the past ten years, I have never read one that equals this book. It is a stimulating romance about the "ugly duckling" getting the man of her dreams. But, boy, does she have to fight him! Alex is a refreshing, funny, witty, and powerful herione who never gives up on her man. There are times I cringe for her, and times that I cheer her on. It is a book I have read several times, and that I'm sure I will read again.
Rating: Summary: Either You Love it or You Hate It... Review: But eihter way it will draw you emotional. There is just no way you can be neutral about this book. Personally I loved this book. In the begining I was a little disgusted at the heroines' charecter, but as the book went on she grew and developed into a stronger person. As far as Douglas being a jerk of coarse you would think that because he says some down right nasty things. The truth of the matter is he felt betrayed by his cousin and the heroine due to the fact that he thought they trapped him. So of coarse the reader thinks he just crawled out of a cave because we know the truth ...that Alex was acting out of love and we all knew that he was going to be Sooooo very sorry by the end of the book. If I felt as betrayed as he did of coarse I would feel angry and want to lash out, especially at the person I held responsible. If you notice over the rest of the book he realizes how wrong he has been and trys to rectify the matter. This would have been a very flat book indeed if the charecters were all perfect and there was no conflict. Romance can not always be wrapped in a nice neat little package and Catherine does a superb job of both charecter and plot developement. By the end of the book our plucky heroine knows just how to handle her man. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book for anyone who is in the mood for a tear jerking, heart racing, thought provoking, and long remembering romance novel for it will never fade.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: C. C. makes me want to meet the Sherbrooke family- just to experience firsthand how truly insane they are!
Not insane in a bad way- but very outspoken and brave to boot! This is a must have for your personal library! I also recommend "Eternal Undying Love" by Brett Keane
Rating: Summary: I couldn't Put It Down Review: Catherine Coulter is fabulous with the written word. She makes her stories seem like they could have been real in another time. Her characters are wonderful and very entertaining. I loved this book and would recomend it to everyone who likes reading historical romance with some suspense thrown in.
Rating: Summary: One of the most distasteful romance novels I've ever read Review: Don't get me wrong, usually I like Coulter novels, but I found this story to be harsh and the "hero" unsympathetic. I read the book once years ago and disliked it. I ran across it in the bookshelves and had forgotten the plot. I re-read it. . .and I still found myself concluding that the misogynist hero was unlikeable. I never got the feeling he deserved the heroine and was unsure as to why she ever forgave him for the way he had treated her. If I were choosing a Catherine Coulter novel that I enjoyed reading, I would avoid the entire "Bride" trilogy (which had a tendency to use marital rape as a plot device-- an unfortunate Coulter tendency). My favorite Coulter romance is perhaps "The Nightengale Legacy," and I enjoyed her mystery "The Maze" as well.
Rating: Summary: Funny Love Story... Review: Douglas Sherbrooke, Earl of Northcliffe, must marry and provide the prerequisite heir. His choice is Melissande, daughter of the Duke of Beresford. One look at the beautiful but shallow girl turns grown men into quivering fools. The responsible Alexandra Chambers, Melissande's sister, has loved Douglas since she was fifteen. When Douglas sends his best friend to marry him to Melissande by proxy, he ends up wedded to the wrong sister. Now the always-in-control Douglas must deal with a wife he didn't want, and the Virgin Bride ghost which makes regular appearances in the countess' bedchamber. This was my first read by Catherine Coulter and it certainly won't be my last. This is also the first installment in the Bride Trilogy which I plan to finish. My favorite type of story is a romance with a good dose of humor. A little intrigue added in doesn't hurt either. While this story has all three of those elements, the intrigue portion was my least favorite here. The rescue of the french woman at the beginning, and especially the kidnapping with subsequent rescue toward the end, seemed rather hokey. Plus, it only served to distract from the main focus of this story which was the relationship betwen Douglas and Alexandra, thrown in with all the wonderful supporting characters. The events and humor that take place while these normally level-headed people learn to deal with each other is priceless! To sum it all up- I deducted one star for the silly intrigue subplot which would've been better left out. But even at four stars, I still very much recommend this book for it's other great qualities.
Rating: Summary: my fav coulter book Review: Every book I read by Catherine Coulter, I read to finish them... This was the first one where I actually enjoyed her characters.. I even read the other books in the Bride series just to read about Douglas and Alexandra.. this one goes on my keeper shelf..
Rating: Summary: Men! Review: Goodness... I do like this one! But please how on earth can men become so useless when it comes to beautiful women.... give us some dept here. Alexandra is wonderful. Douglas is really rather irritating. His treatment of Alex and then thinks he is so wonderful when he decides to keep her around. Never even giving thought to her feelings. Well that is what makes a book a good book... when you get involved with the characters and want to yell at them yourself. Hollis the butler is on my A1 list... he is too cool!
Rating: Summary: First Time Review: I am a devoted reader of Johanna Lindsey, Jude Deveraux. And recently Andrea Kane and Julie Garwood. Since I have read almost all their books I've had to find other authors that compared to them. I now can add Coulter to my list. I've now read quite a few of her books recently, and just like any other author some of her books are great and some aren't. To me THIS ONE IS GOOD! It always depends on the reader and we get from the book. I would like to see any of us write a great outstanding book every year. If you don't like the book, find something else to read and leave the author alone.
