Summary: From a die-hard JAK fan...
Review: I hated to give this book only 3 stars, but unfortunately, that is all it deserved. I am always ready to buy any new Jayne Ann Krentz book, but this one certainly didn't live up to expectations. While the romance and intrigue were interesting and fast-paced, for the first time I felt that the setting overshadowed the plot. I'm not a huge fan of futuristic romance, but I always read a book with an open mind. I loved her other books of this nature, Amaryllis, Zinnia..., but I just could not get past the awkwardness of the setting in After Dark. If you are an avid JAK reader, buy the book. If you are considering this book as your first introduction to Jayne Ann Krentz, I highly recommend you start with a different book so that you don't get a bad first impression.

Summary: Unsatisfied!
Review: I enjoyed the book, until the end. It was almost as if my book was missing the final chapter. I had too many unanswered questions! What really happened during the "lost weekend"? Was she set up by the ghost hunters? Will Lydia and Emmett get together for more than just a date? What happened to the cabinet?!!

I don't agree that you have to read the previous Jayne Castle books first. There is little continuity between the previous books. No mention of being professionally matched for marriage, none of the same characters, no coff-tea!

Of course I can't wait to read the next one!

Summary: Can't wait for the sequel! I hope!
Review: I enjoyed the book, it had all the key ingrediants for a good Jayne Ann Krentz/ Jayne Castle book. Independant female lead with a powerful male counterpart, mixed with good dialog and interesting background story. However, I was VERY dissappointed in the ending. I then remembered that Jayne under any name is one of the only authors who likes to make sequels to her books. For example: Gift of Fire, Gift of Gold. There are also her series of Guenivere Jones stories... that we waited for impatiently... So all I can say is: I hope there is a SEQUEL in the making...

Summary: HORRIBLY DISAPPOINTING....
Review: is all I have to say about After Dark. I have read all of Ms. Krentz's novels with great enthusiasm and am rarely disappointed. Unfortunately, After Dark broke that streak. The plot was confusing, the dialogue forced and the ending cliched. After reading Amaryllis and Orchid and some of Ms. Krentz's earlier science fiction, (Sweet Starfire is one of my favorite novels)I couldn't wait to read After Dark. I found myself struggling to finish the book, hoping each chapter would improve. Sadly, I had no such luck.

Summary: something nice and new
Review: so many people criticize jayne for being formulaic, then when she does something different, yell about it. i love jayne's books, and i love her sci-fi. i agree that there are a few too many "rez" words, but other than that, i could kiss her feet for not writing an obligatory wedding and baby ending. what's unfulfilling about people who are willing to date for more than a week before marriage?! i loved the characters, suspense, alternate setting, all of it. even if she doesn't turn this book into a sequel, i'm happy with it.

Summary: Couldn't put it down!
Review: I did not read the other Harmony books first. A friend gave me this book, it's not something I would usually read. I was hooked within the first chapter. It was virtually impossible to put down, I finished the book in two days. I highly reccomend this book. I'm ordering the other Harmony books now.

Summary: Not complete
Review: I have read all in the series for Harmony. I found this one lacking in several areas. The characters were not well developed. The overuse of the word "rez" made me want to white out all references to it. The ending was too abrupt, with no background information on the secret client. The love scenes are, in my opinion, what makes Jayne Castle's books enjoyable. This one falls short. This does not mean that I will stop purchasing her books. On the contrary, I have always enjoyed her style of writing and will continue to do so.

Summary: The saga continues....
Review: After Dark, another book written about the colonists on Harmony continues the saga of previous Jayne Castle futuristic series. For first readers, it might be to your advantage to read the preceeding novels to fully enjoy this one. I awaited this book with excitement but was disappointed to find the zesty romance scenes scaled down to two and the ending left hanging. I'm going to assume the Jayne will continue the relationship between Lydia and Emmett and hopefully, give us those sizzling sexual scenes we enjoy. There are a number of things I like about Jayne's books, one of which is that the women in her stories are not wishy-washy and not only use their brains but don't let themselves be dominated by the man all the time... the second thing I like is that she has great story lines and interesting plots, and of course, a steamy romance which really spices the whole book. It most cases these 3 items create a great romance book. After Dark fell short in the romance department and so I'm hoping she will correct this with the sequel which I'm sure is in the works now...

Summary: Another segment in the Harmony saga.
Review: After 48 hours alone in an alien cave, Lydia Smith has found her life and career ruined. She is struggling to make a comeback while working in a low-rate museum. Just as she gets a client for private investigation, she finds a ruin rat friend dead at the museum. Soon she and her client, former Guild head Emmett London, are knee deep in danger as they search for Emmett's nephew and the murderer. In between, Lydia must deal with her resentment of ghost hunters and Guild members, past and present.

This is not a stand alone book. You must read ORCHID, AMARYLLIS, and ZINNIA first. If you don't, you may be lost in the details of Harmony. However, I am surprised at the viciousness of some of the reviews. Most successful romance authors have a common theme in their books. It makes the reader comfortable. The way the author makes each book new and somehow different is what keeps us coming back. Diana Palmer, Jayne Ann Krentz, Betty Neels, they all have common themes/storylines in their books. I found AFTER DARK to be a lovely tale of life in Harmony. Okay, it is like "Seattle in 2000". So what? That makes it familiar. As the experts say, fashions come in cycles. Would I recommend this book to a new reader of Castle? No, they must start at the beginning. Would I say to a fan to buy it? Yes, I would. It might not have been as good as the previous three, but it was still a lovely tale of a bullheaded hero and a stubborn heroine.

Summary: Goodbye Jayne Ann
Review: We had a great run. I have been enjoying Krentz's work for more than 12 years, but after a series of less than exciting, less than creatve books with cookie-cutter characters and two-bit literary devices that are indifferently tossed into the same tired plot, I am calling it quits. After Dark is the bottom of a barrel of laughable "futuristic" romances that feature very little romance and a startling resemblance to the northwestern United States at the start of the 21st century. If you are looking for a great Krentz futuristic romance that harkens back to the days before she became the formidable Krentz/Quick/Castle word factory, check out Sweet Starfire. One of her early works, it has a real futuristic plot that is innovative and consistent throughout, as well as terrific characters with sharp dialogue and real chemistry. Best of all, you feel that Krentz is enjoying herself as she creates her new world. Too bad you don't get the same feeling when you read After Dark. Bye bye, Jayne. I'll miss you, but I won't take another chance on one of your books.
