Summary: This is NOT the Cynsters' equal.
Review: I normally really enjoy Ms. Laurens' books, but this one was lacking in several ways:

1) The premise is not credible. I can't really understand what all these men's beef is about, much less believe that they would form a group, buy a house, and refit the house just so that they could have their little club. It sounds somewhat kindergarten-ish.

2) Leonora is as dull as they come. I couldn't find a thing about this woman (aside from her being 26) attractive enough to capture Tristan's attention, much less make him decide to marry her before he has even met her. Actually, that does make sense. He'd already decided to marry her before making her acquaintance, and even though he found out how incredibly boring she is, he was too stubborn to change his mind.

3) Tristan is too vague of a character to fall for. He didn't really do it for me. No strong opinions. No witty dialogue. No outstanding characteristics. Now his relationship with Leonora makes even more sense: he found her as boring as she found him, and together they decided to living in a big, boring house and have little, boring babies.

and 4) The story takes forever to develop. Leonora and Tristan dither around lots and lots before anything interesting happens. If you like people making social calls, this is the book for you.

This book won't stop me from buying Ms. Laurens' books; however, I do hope the next story of the series gets better or I'll just have to wait the whole thing out.

Summary: Too long for a mediocre story
Review: I picked up this book expecting another fabulous historical from Stephanie Laurens, rich in characters and an intriguing plot. But the book was too long to support this plot, and the characters, especially the heroine, wore thin. One of Laurens' strengths as a romance writer is how well she writes the hero's journey to win over the heroine. And in this novel, the heroine's protestations are extremely weak and outcome is obvious from the beginning.

The Lady Chosen certainly cannot compare with any of the Cynster novels, which have distinct characters and compelling romances. I fear the Bastion Club series is going to be 7 novels of retread ground, especially if Laurens is writing 2 per year.

Summary: Don't waste your time!!
Review: I read a lot of book and have never felt so compelled to write a review. This book is awful. The characters have no redeeming value. There is NOTHING likable about either of them. The plot is weak and there is no chemistry between the main characters. Don't waste your time on this one!

Summary: WONDERFUL-but not perfect
Review: I really enjoyed the book. This was the first Stephanie Laurens book that I had read. Yes, it was long and there was some inconsistances, but this is fiction and you should be able to suspend reason just a little bit to have to fun, and this was definitely FUN! I have now read several other of Ms. Laurens works and this is still my favorite. ENJOY!!!

Summary: Off to a great start!!
Review: I've always enjoyed reading Stephanie Laurens' books on weekends. Great way to relax and unwind. The beginning of this series is just as promising as the Cynsters andd I highly recommend it.

Summary: Better then the Cynster series
Review: I've read and enjoyed all the Cynster books and can say that Ms Laurens writing has evolved over time. This was a read in a day and half book. I couldn't put it down. The characters are strong and worthwhile.

Summary: Just slightly below par
Review: My mother-in-law and I both fell in love with the Bar Cynster series this author prviously wrote. You know it must have been good if your mother-in-law calls you long distance to talk about these books. There was not enough information in the beginning of this book to make the formation of this group of men in any way plausable. For myself it was a little hard to believe that these characters fell in love. There was not enough spoken and physical interaction between the two main characters.

I have bought and read the second book in this series. It was better than this one, but not as good as the Cynster series. My mother-in-law concers.

Summary: The Lady Chosen
Review: Okay- let me be honest w/ u.... IT SUCKED. DONT READ IT. Leonora, the heroine is to submissive- she allows herself to be quieted w/ every kiss(Apparently no feminist). Usually, Stephanie Laurens is a good auther. I just didnt feel the real reason why the book was published. The story line only went on when Leonora and Tristan (the hero) decided to stop dallying w/ each other. Story line sucks; It was basically a book about sex. You couldn't turn the page without reading one more corny love scene. Another thing: The heroine inclines her damn head too much! I'm returning the book, so, If you have to, get it from the library.

Summary: Long Laborious Read
Review: Setting - London 1815 --- First, I will say that I am a BIG Fan of Stephanie Laurens and was sincerely looking forward to the start of her new series. The premise of seven very eligible bachelors of rank and title - all home from dangerous missions on the continent following the battle of Waterloo forming a club of sorts to select their own brides and not be set upon or harangued by well meaning matchmakers sounded amusing and fun. Being familiar with Ms. Laurens work this was something I looked forward to.

Tristan Wemyss, Earl of Trentham, is the first to be featured in this series. It is he who is overseeing the work being done on the home that these gentlemen were renovating as a `club' to meet and commiserate with one another. Tristan, was the recipient of an unexpected large inheritance that came both with the responsibility of supporting fourteen older female aunts and cousins along with a time stipulation that made it imperative that he marry within a year or lose quite a bit of the monies that came with it. Naturally, our hero never planned marriage and was miffed that he would be forced into it. He finds himself attracted to a very attractive spinster living in the house next to their club. Leonora Carling, is attractive, a spinster - who appears to have no interest in marriage. After a series of unsuccessful burglaries and disturbing coincidences they form a partnership to delve into the matter - while both fight a burgeoning physical attraction.

As to why I did not give this book a higher rating there were many reasons. Leonora Carling has to be one of the least likeable heroines I have ever encountered. She savors her independent lifestyle yet after about 100-200 pages she sets out to seduce Tristan, then the rest of the book has him trying to convince her to marry him as she continually refuses him. If it were not for some very typically wonderful sensual seductions on the part of Tristan I probably would not have finished this book. The mysterious burglaries and the reason for them was one of the weaker aspects of the plot and seemed to go round and round in circles where you really didn't even care to know the answer. Boring! In my opinion, this was not worthy of this authors talent as it appeared she was just filling a quota of pages - over 400 - which made this one of the more laborious reads of the year!
