Rating: Summary: This romance series, especially this novel , is great Review: Fleeing his brother's wedding before he becomes the next catch of the season, Alasdair "Lucifer" Cynster goes to the countryside to visit his friend, mentor, and fellow collector Horatio Walham. In Colyton Manor, Lucifer finds someone murdered Horatio. However, Phyllida Tallent accidentally knocks over a halberd, knocking out Lucifer. On her way to get help, she happens to notice a brown hat. Phyllida's dad, the magistrate concludes Lucifer is innocent of murder. Lucifer vows to uncover the killer's identity and Phyllida agrees to help him. As they investigate, several attempts to kill Phyllida occur. As Lucifer and Phyllida fall in love, they make love. He knows he made love with her because he will marry her, while she knows she made love because she loves him. However, a killer remains free with Phyllida being the prime target because she saw something at Horatio's house that identifies the murderer. New York Times best-selling author Stephanie Laurens has written an exciting historical romantic-mystery that freshens up her popular Cynster series. Lucifer and Phyllida are a wonderful couple who readers will adore and the tidbits that allow the audience to absorb the 1820 English countryside adds value to the tale. However, it is the amateur sleuthing of the lead couple that turns ALL ABOUT LOVE into a winning regency tale. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: great! Review: How can anyone say that this book was so boring? it's the whole cynster atmosphere. i think it's great that the series can continue and you follow the lives of previous books, i can't wait for the next installment!
Rating: Summary: Very hard for me to rate Review: How to write a review that does not sound like all the others out there, that is the question. I really enjoyed Lucifer and Phyllida's story and if I had not already read the previous 5 stories, I probably would have loved this book and given it a 4 or 5 star rating. As is it stands, I would give it 3 1/2 not 3 if I were able. Most of what the other reviewers have said stands true: The stories have gotten a bit formulistic (though I do like the formula), where all the Cynaster males could substitute for each other (except perhaps Devil). Unlike some complaints, I liked the fact that we are taken outside London, and I liked the depth of the plot. The fact that there is a murder to solve and not a "simplistic" one at that, added a lot to the book. I did think that there were too many secondary characters who were too similar though, and I just mushed them all together in my mind. I did find Lucifer's fall a bit fast (sorry about that pun), considering he was fleeing London to avoid exactly what happened. Although I like the fact that Lucifer and Phyllida spent a lot of time together, they still only knew each other for a short time before they fell in love and got married. Especially once we learn about Phyllida's aversion to marriage. Lucifer does a great job convincing her to marry him, but this should have happened over 5 to7 months, not 2. And although starting to sound nit picky, would Phyllida been allowed so much freedom and time to spend with Lucifer alone in 1820? All in all, I really did like this book, and I would suggest reading it, especially if you have not already read the previous 5 books. The character development is strong and the book is more character and plot driven than sex scene driven (though there are plenty of those too) which to me makes for a strong read. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: All About Love = All about BOREDOM Review: I ask myself: How many times can Stephanie Laurens write the exact same story and still get published? Obviously, she can do it six times. This novel is just like Devil's Bride, which is just like Rake's Vow, which is just like Secret Love, which is... Well, we get the idea. Hero meets heroine, decides she's the one for him, she doesn't think so for most of the book, someone is murdered, hero will investigate but doesn't want heroine's help, heroine is bound and determined to inject herself into the action, heroine decides she likes hero after all, they have sex, hero marries heroine, murder gets solved, everyone lives happily ever after. This is the plot of every Cynster novel. If it's not bad enough to recycle the plot over and over, the characters are always the same. What's the difference between any of the Cynster men, or the Cynster women besides changing a few minor details? Characterization is much more than changing eye color, or hobby. And I swear, even the dialogue in this book is the same as all the others in the series. This is the conversation that every Laurens Hero and heroine have in every single book, for at least half of the book: Hero: You will marry me. Heroine: Never! Repeat until nausea is induced. Stephanie Laurens has a true talent for atmospheric writing and, sometimes, can actually display a decent ear for dialogue. If only she would use it! Writing by template is never attractive, and it only gets worse with each additional installment. And to think that there will be MORE books in the Cynster series, which I'm sure will be exactly like all the others. I could have just read Devil's Bride 5, 6 or 7 more times rather than getting more books in this series. Recommendation: Buy Cynster books used. Please send a message to all authors that only those who bother to be original with each and every book deserve our hard-earned money.
Rating: Summary: What's the fuss about - this is a great book! Review: I don't understand the one star and two star ratings of this book by other reviewers - unless they just aren't fans of the genre and were forced to read this at gunpoint. I will admit that I agree with some of the others - nothing quite equals that first "wow" you got when you read the first Cynster book, Devil's Bride. As strong as all the Cynster guys are, they do pale in comparison to Devil. I think Phyllida holds up just fine to the rest of the Cynster wives. Yes, we have a formula going here - duh, it was set up in Devil's Bride. None of these guys are going to fall easily, but the bigger they are, the...well, you get the drift. In my opinion, this book has some features not found in the other books - 1)the subplot mystery is much, much stronger and cohesive than all of the other books (Devil's Bride was good, but the rest have been rather silly). Lauren's is showing growth as an overall writer. 2)I personally liked the fact that we went out of London and the ton for once - it's like a sexy Jane Austen book, with country folks and manners. 3)I agree with the other reviewer who noted the unique difference with Lucifer's proposal - it's about time! I had to write this review to come to the defense of the book. I didn't find it watered down or weak at all. But stay away if you want ballgowns and rides around the park (yawn). (And by the way, I loved Demon and Flick's story - Rogue's Proposal. Yes, it's a little,er, rougher than the others, but those two fit together so well. Of all, I found Gabriel's story the weakest, but the premise was something I found improbable. However, the love scenes were some of the best! See - always something to love in a Cynster novel.) I say, bring on Chillingsworth, the twins, and Tolly's little brother! In fact, with all of these baby boys, I see some Victorian novels just begging to be written!
Rating: Summary: Keep up the good work "Stephanie!! Review: I found this book to be quite a page turner. It kept me interested and that says a lot for me. Stephanie Laurens is a wonderful writer and I take my hat off to her for putting together this one.
Rating: Summary: Delightful! Review: I have read all of her Cynster novels and each one was wonderful. This does not disappoint.
Rating: Summary: Worth the wait! Review: I have read all of the other Bar Cynster series and was not disappointed in this one. I thought Stephanie Laurens did a good job with continuing the story with the last of the Bar Cynster. True, Lucifer did fall in love fairly quickly after meeting Phyllida, but that is the strength of the Cynster curse. I do agree that Lucifer may not have been the best nickname for Alasdair since he was a very nice gentleman in this story. I can't wait for Chillingworth and the twins' stories.
