Rating: Summary: Typical Coupland... Great! Review: Though not my favorite Coupland (Life After God), I enjoyed Miss Wyoming every bit as much as I've enjoyed all of his other works. If you get nothing else out of his works, you get rich characters and an almost philosophical look at meaning in life. In addition, Miss Wyoming is a great love story. As you read it, you sympathize with the characters to the point that you feel anxiety and love as if you were them. You understand John Johnson's lovesickness and why he can't sleep or eat. You crave resolution. You want John to be able to express everything he feels for Susan. You want the happy ending. You desire the only thing that seems to bring a sense of meaning to the lives on the characters in the book. Miss Wyoming is a gripping book that is hard to put down and at the same time it is a cerebral book that asks the tough questions about life. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: Same unique style, different scenarios Review: What I perhaps enjoyed most about "Miss Wyoming" was that Coupland tackled new subject matters. No self-absorbed twentysomethings. No plans to save the world. Instead, there were unique characters on their different personal quests. And I love the amazing detailed descriptions only Coupland could devise (John's pale blue eyes are "the color of sun-faded parking tickets.)
Rating: Summary: As usual, fantastic Coupland Review: Miss Wyoming is a fantastic book, with superbly realized characters, a sleek and efficient style, and enough plot twist to keep even the most fickle readers satisfied. The way the story moves around, going back and forth in time, and relating the characters with each other, reminded me of the current movie Magnolia, and the book took less time to read than watching the movie. Always a plus.
Rating: Summary: No "Microserfs," but not at all bad. Review: As with most of the reviewers below mine on this page, Douglas Coupland is my favorite author. While "Miss Wyoming" was nowhere near as great as "Microserfs" (which I consider literary perfection), it was still a very entertaining book. It benefits from Coupland's non-chronological storytelling (it's similar to "The Usual Suspects" in the way the book starts almost at the end of the story and then jumps around in time from there), and the characters, while not fully believable as people, are still sympathetic. All in all, it's pretty satisfying.
Rating: Summary: Great Book, So Why Am I So Angry Review: So here's the deal, I've read the first chapter and my heart is already racing in anticipation, but I am also very angry and here's why: Someone, i am assuming the publisher, decided it would be a good idea to do a cover wrap on the dust jacket that shows the title "Miss Wyoming." That's fine by me, it wasn't what I expected, but it was fine. Because I liked the look of the original cover I choose to remove this wrap. Bad idea. The adhesive that was used to afix the wrap doesn't release in the snotty-gummy way I expected, instead it just ripped the dust jacket. Anger ensues.
Rating: Summary: Survey of Life in B land Review: Miss Wyoming -- new book by Douglas Coupland. Good book. Not great, in that there was an uneasy feeling that there wasn't really a center to it. It's a survey of a couple of fringe Hollywood types, how they got where they are, and part of their quest for meaning or a center to their lives. Not really a quest, but a survey...Life's a journey, not a destination comes to mind. That said, I couldn't put it down until I was done with it. Vividly drawn characters.
Rating: Summary: Decent read, but no "Generation X" or "Life After God" Review: Douglas Coupland is my favorite author. I have loved all of his books--until now. The quirky characters in "Miss Wyoming" often made me laugh, but the novel as a whole did not bring me through the depths of emotion that his other books have. I don't feel like i'm a better person for having read "Miss Wyoming." I realize it's a lot to ask of a writer to change my life, but in the past, it was a challenge that Coupland had no problem meeting.
Rating: Summary: Good, but not great Review: Douglas Coupland is my favorite authors. I eagerly await each new release and snag it at its first availability."Miss Wyoming" is a good book. I liked the characters and the discontinuity of time. But it wasn't as strong as his other works. I liked "Girlfriend in a Coma" much more. A must-read for a Coupland fan, but not one of his best.
Rating: Summary: a fulfilling book Review: I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book is August. I was very excited, as Douglas is my favourite author (in the spirit of you knowing my bias). I must say the book was great. It reminded me on one level of a Vonnegut novel, but this book was just so 'there' for me. It may not have touched me like Microserfs did, but the books was satisfying. It was like receiving a letter from an old friend and hearing that not only is their life going well, but also that they still think about you. There was just something reassuring in this novel, maybe it was that you don't have to be the persona that you are. It gave me hope that I can stop being cynical (the generations cliched attitude) and project the happy, optomistic person that I am on the inside. I know this hasn't been just about the book, but to me when I read a good book it will bring out these emotions. This isn't like watching EdTV, a shallow, pointless, cliche movie, this is like watching American Beauty or even, dare I say, Fight Club, movies that just touch you inside because they are real. Thank you Douglas for writing a novel that is real and honest.
Rating: Summary: Another Great Coupland Novel Review: an amazing book, full of twists, turns, and as always..insight. Brilliant
