Rating: Summary: The book offers great reading Review: I was forced to read the book for english 102 and I am overjoyed with the outcome of what I experienced by reading this novel.
Rating: Summary: This is not only a girl's book. Review: Even though my teacher described it as a love story, it is not. I saw it as a true representation of the pioneers on their settlement of the Old West. I would recommend it for any person who would like to experience the feeling of being back on the farm in the early to late 1800s.
Rating: Summary: A Treasure to Enjoy. Review: I have been an avid reader since I can remember. However, I avoided this book while growing up in Nebraska where the book takes place. I felt I have lived here all my life, why would I want to read about it. I finally read this while taking a college literature course and I absolutely loved it. I could not put it down once I started. I related to it in so many ways. It basically was a summary of my ancestors history and how they must of felt coming over here from Czechoslavakia. I could feel the pain and suffering they must of felt once they arrived here. Read it and learn a little about the history of all immigrants.
Rating: Summary: The land is the main character in MY ANTONIA. Review: In the introduction, Cather writes of Antonia, "More than any other person we remembered, this girl seemed to mean to us the country..." Antonia's story is the thinly veiled story of the land itself. The exotic girl becomes the tough, hard working woman. She experiences strife but eventually becomes the bountiful, mother earth. So, too, the land evolves from the strange, wild country into an explosion of fruitfulness. Cather anthropomorphizes the land with vivid phrases: "slightly undulating", "...I felt the motion in the landscape; ... as if the shaggy grass were a sort of loose hide, and underneath it herds of wild buffalo were galloping, galloping..." Look behind or within Cather's charachters and discover the great, wonderous, living land.
Rating: Summary: The best book ever! 5 STARS Review: This book is about life as a pioneer in Nebraska. This is a good book for people of all ages who like to read. I can almost guarantee you and anyone else who reads this book will start being interested in the history of America.
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: I am a Junior attending the Lowell Whiteman School and this book was required reading for this year. I had to read the Scarlet Letter, Red Badge of Courage, and others and I must say that this book stood out from all of the other books. I enjoyed reading this book so much that it didn't seem to be a chore to read it for me. Cather does an incredable job of using Antonia as a symbol through out the novel. She also seems to be elaborating on the Latin saying, "Optima dies...prima fugit." In the mortal world, the best days are the first to flee.
Rating: Summary: Lovely piece of literature Review: It's sweet, touching, powerful, and sincere. The unique setting--rural Nebraska--makes the novel even more intriguing. The simplicity yet vividness of the writing make it an easy yet interesting read.
Rating: Summary: There is an ugly cover and this books reeks. Review: Its stupid, and gushy. Lets here it for the girls
Rating: Summary: it was gushy. lets hear it for the girls.! Review: stupid, and really, really, really gush
Rating: Summary: simply beautiful Review: Ms. Cather's images make the phrase "the beauty of simplicity" ring true for me. This book finds beauty in the simplest things: a garden, a summer breeze, conversation around the kitchen stove. A wonderful book.
