Review: Perhaps this book is insufficient for someone with no theological background. On the other hand, I have found it to be the most accessible of works written about Swedenborgianism in the last century.

It may surprise readers to know this. Other interpreters of Swedenborg's works have been hopelessly obscure, relying on terminology that is coherent only to Swedenborgians, and then only to those with sufficient caffiene to apply themselves to it. Much of what passes as Swedenborgian interpretation depends on poor and stilted translations; some effort has been made since the 1960's to remedy this situation (Dole and Woofenden translations).

The happy news is that now the Swedenborg Foundation and J. Applesed Press are making some effort at an approach to non-Swedenborgians. J. Appleseed is especially adept at explaining Swedenborg's teachings to non-Swedenborgians.
