Summary: An excellent book encouraging serious introspection
Review: The Heavenly Ladder was an uplifting surprise. It was practical and mystical, well-referenced and wonderfully written. Not only are there dozens of specific exercises designed for personal reflection and meditation, there is a wealth of information explaining the Jewish traditions that encourage such growth. I often think that authors of self-help books are helping primarily themselves by espousing their own methods. This book references methodology thousands of years old and applies it to techniques useful right now. Who am I to argue with Maimonides? Mr. Hofmann has done something uncanny- a self-help book that is truly helpful and definitely fascinating.
