Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good translation and very detailed notes
Review: Olivelle does much to right some of the wrongs done by Indologists/Sanskritists in the past. He has copious notes on each Upanisad and has tried to be scrupulous in his translations.
Also, he has almost completely followed the texts as the tradition has preserved it for thousands of years and not twisted it to his own whims and fancies.
The only issue I have with his translation is that at a few places he does do the standard Indologist turn and interpret instead of translate to somewhat suit his own predilictions. At these places a short note explaining his reasons would have been helpful. However, these are very rare and almost never interfere with the philosophy of the text (they mostly affect one's view of the dates/history of the text)

In the final analysis, something in it for everybody. A good translation that can be read to get an idea of what the Upanisads talk about for the lay reader and detailed notes with interesting observations for the scholar
