Rating: Summary: Hope for a Hurting Nation Review: Col Jeff takes the reader on an incredible roller coaster of emotions that depict military life through the eyes of faith. He conveys the tough reality of life, where God doesn't always deliver people from the circumstances. Instead, he shows how these men and women, through their faith in Christ were kept even through their circumstances (POW's, Traumatically wounded GI's etc). This is a must read for those looking for encouragement and hope when our nation is sorely in need of it.
Rating: Summary: Shelve it in the Amen Corner of the library. Review: For three-hundred years following the life of Jesus, it was nearly unthinkable for a Christian to become a soldier, much less participate in war. Then, Christianity gained control of the Roman Empire & its legions. Justification for Pax Romana was needed, & Augustine provided it with his "just war" requirements. There has been no war in history which has met all of those requirements. Perhaps the most significant "military moment with God" occurred when a junior officer in the Roman Army, his name was Martin from Tours, put down his weapons the day before a battle, offering instead to stand, defenseless except for a Cross, between the opposing armies. Fortunately, a truce was worked out that night. There is more truth to that story than to the one in this book recounting in detail the meeting between Big Chief George Washington & the Big Chief of the native American warriors, formerly allied with the French, who had wiped out half of young Washington's command & nearly killed the future Father of Our Country. This is how what should be an accurate, dispassionately written book, in which authentic spiritual experiences stirringly speak for themselves, becomes historically suspect. Too bad. As for there being "no atheists in foxholes," my brother steadfastly maintains that he remained one during his year in & around Pleiku. The nearness of death does not inspire religious faith in everyone. Sometimes there's only terror followed by resignation.
Rating: Summary: Holm Report Review: I have read the manuscript of this book. This book blessed me in several ways. One, it has many experiences of God' working in the lives of many people, especially military personnel. I am always bless with how God works in peoples lives. Two, it gives a person a better perpective of our armed forces in a way that the general public is not aware, and should be more up to date about the inner workings of our service men and women. Three, it brings out some of the problems that the families of service people deal with on a daily basis that is unique to the military. Four , it brings out the dedication of the men and women that serve this country, who are willing to lay their very lives on the line to protect our freedom. This book is not just a book to lift the spirits of people in the military, but is a book that every person should read. It is not a book to be read once and then put down to gather dust, but to be read over and over for the spiritual benefit of all who read it and enjoy God's blessings. This book should be in every ones home, in every public library, and in every church library.
Rating: Summary: A Time for Patiotism Review: In a time of renewed patiotism, Col. O'Leary's book is a timely release. It poignent words of inspiration have gripped the hearts of readers all across the United States. Now, more than ever, Americans believe in the heroism of the public servant. The Colonel, the Marine Recon., the naval captain, and even the military family. This is a collection of unforgettable memoirs of our modern-day heros. The brave men (and women) who have been to Hell and back, living to tell the story of the people (and the God) that led them through. It is a book encouraging renewed strength and belief in "One nation, under God, Indivisible... With Liberty and Justice... For all."
Rating: Summary: High Ground, Holy Ground. Review: There is just so much you could say about this book. For one Colonel Jeffrey O'Leary is an outstanding author. Even though he himself didn't write much of this book it took a great deal of research to come up with what he has written here. Before each chapter he has a list of quotes. Those quote are from all different kinds of people. It just goes to show that many different people have their faith in the one and only true God. The stories that are in here are all different. Some will make you want to cry other will make you laugh. Once I started I just couldn't stop reading. I hated it when I had to put it down and do something else. In my opinion it is such a good book that I am buying as many as I can and giving them out as Christmas gifts to the family and friends. Even to a non believer this would be a good book. It show that through the toughest times people held onto what they believed in and God pulled them through when there was no way that they could have made it without him there by their sides. I can't say much more without ruining the book for you. I would like to tell you about some of the stories but they are too good to tell them now. I will have to let you decide for yourself how good the book really is. I hope you enjoy it and that this review was helpfull to you.
Rating: Summary: GREAT INSPIRATIONAL BOOK!!! Review: This book was well-written and kept one's attention throughout. In addition to telling stories of heroism and suffering of our military, it shows how God is the one who is victorious in all the situations. Fantastic, Must-Read book for military or non-military readers.
Rating: Summary: High Ground, Holy Ground. Review: Upon finishing the book,I felt like I was standing on holy ground, not just high ground. The book abounds in sensitive and moving stories of love and courage from people with integrity, patriotism, and faith that has gone through the fire--ordinary people reflecting upon the gracious Creator, the one and only God.
