This book contains everything you would ever want to know about the history of runes. This one book also provides information on how to make runes, how to read the runes, and of course, how to use them. There are no overly religious overtones as there are in some books about runes that for me take away from the pagan mystique. Also, the illustrations in the book are excellent which aid in learning the runes. If you don't like history and prefer to simply know how to use them, not a problem, just skip ahead in the book.

Review: I chose this book because I don't like anything satanic (which many runes books protray), and I don't want a "watered-down" version either, so I figured this would be my best bet. It has great pictures, many interpretations of the runes, the history behind it (because I think that's very important). This book is suited for those who just want the facts and still worship God!

This is a great book for someone making the leap from beginner to expert, as far as working with the runes.
Lots of illustrations, and quite a lot of information on the history of runes, such as their evolution into different futharks & their many uses by different cultures.
If you have anything to do with runes, then you definitely should get this book!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: What are runes? Review: The Complete Illustrated Guide to Runes By Nigel PennickThis is a good rescource to learn the history of many rune systems and their meanings. It explains the runes of 5 different systems: Elder futhark, Anglo-saxon and northumbrian runes, Younger futhark, Gothic and medieval runes, and the Armanen runes, and goes over the meaning of each individual rune and why it means what it does. This also goes over rune use through out history, what runes are, and an almost endless amount of different uses for the runes. I RECOMEND this book FOR deciding what rune system you might want to use, or just good facts on what runes are whether or not you belive in or want to use them. I am NOT a neo-pagan or involved with wicca or any spiritual group. I am not religous, THIS BOOK REVIEW IS MY OWN OPINION ONLY. This does NOT mean that you have to agree with me. You might love the books I listed above, I don't have a problem with that. We each have different prospectives and opinions, my review in No Way should be Your Opinion.

It's wide reaching, although by necessity each chapter is brief. Pennick doesn't take the creative liberties one finds in many of his other books. This one is historically accurate and fascinating to read. It's not for runic scholars, but delightful for everyone else. I heartily recommend it.
