Rating: Summary: To be treated with care Review: /I do not want to continue on in a boring way for everyone, but I do feel strongly much of this material should be treated with great care. Some reviewers are saying Mr Brier's book is good _because_ these incantations work and some are saying that it is a good book _despite_ the magic not working. What about this book being bad exactly because these spells sometimes _do_ work? This is dangerous territory, and I am sincerely astounded at how lightly these things are being treated.
Rating: Summary: a fairly dismissive account Review: Brier, who wrote the wonderful MURDER OF TUTANKHAMEN, has written a book that is clearly dismissive of the religions and high culture of Egypt. In Brier's eyes, Egyptian religion was nothing but a silly lot of superstition. In fact, there is a highly symbolic nature to a great deal of Egyptian spritual thought that goes beyond a literal meaning of the hieroglyphs. Indeed, sounds were believe to hold vibratory magic, and anyone with sensitivity can read this in the hieroglypic texts. To read Brier, one would think that all they did was wear amulets to prevent illness and prepare disgusting mixtures for miraculous healing. Surely, there were a large number of Egyptians who believed in all sorts of superstions, but Brier does not balance this fact with any of the many graceful, beautiful prayers that adorn the tombs. Surprisingly, good old Sir Wallis Budge summarizes Egyptian magic much better in his EGYPTIAN MAGIC. Budge has been considered outdated for many years, but his work still forms the basis of modern Egyptology. All in all, this book was disappointing. Lynn
Rating: Summary: Egyptian Magic Review: I found this book helpful in how Egyptians viewed their Religion I practice Egyptian magic myself.I found some of the spells helpful and got information on how to write my own.I am a Anth./Arch. student,I useally don't put much faith in mainstream Egyptologists but I like Bob Brier on TV and in my opinion he is one of the more open minded Egyptologists.By reading what has been found so far it helps me to create my own rituals. It's an easy read and even has some humor in it I recomend it to anyone interested in Egyptian Magic
Rating: Summary: Easy & pleasant Review: I found this book very easy to read and understand the Egyptian life for anyone who has no particular background in ancient Egyptian history and magic.
Rating: Summary: Aincient Egyptian Magic Review: The spells I have found in this book I use on a daily basis, and there are many things that could have happened to me without them. This book shows you everything from what Aincient Egypt was like, to how to become a priest or magician (Sesh Per Ankh). In short I am a very satisfied costomer, and would like to thank Bob Brier for writing such an incredible book!
Rating: Summary: Excellent history, but not enough spells Review: There's a lot of history about Ancient Egypt, but very few spells. The best part is probably the Egyptian calender that's included in this book. Apart from that, it's well researched but without any really "mystical" aspect, and that is disappointing.
