Summary: Best book I've read on the subject
Review: As a Christian living in Utah, I have read many books about Mormonism. Many of them have less than a loving attitude towards the Mormon people, and thus it is difficult to discover practical, positive ways to share your faith with your Mormon friends. This book, on the other hand, seems to strike the perfect balance, loving Mormons without compromising Christian beliefs.

The first half of the book concentrates on knowing Mormons' culture and their doctrine. The material is presented in a very clear and interesting manner. Mark Cares has lived in this culture many years and has an excellent understanding of it which he conveys very well to the reader. This material is essential to understand your Mormon friend so that you can share with them in a sensitive and loving manner.

The second half of the book gives very effective witnessing strategies based on the cultural information presented in the first half of the book. It includes an especially useful chapter on witnessing to the Mormon missionaries, along with an essential dictionary of "mormonese". This will help you to make sure that you are really talking TO your Mormon friend and not just past them.

If you had to have only one book on Mormonism on your shelf, this would be the one to buy.

Summary: Excellent Witness Resource to Our Mormon Friends
Review: Cares provides us with an excellent book both to understand what Mormons believe, and also how to and not to witness the Christian faith to them.

Any Christian witness must do three things: first, demonstrate that we care for them, whether they come to the Christian faith; second, that we understand what they believe; and finally, that what they currently believe will not give them eternal life in heaven.

Cares excellent book meets these three criteria exceptionally well. His background in Mormonism provides a firsthand testimony of their beliefs and culture, insights which are so valuable in reaching our Mormon friends. All this in an attitude which is convincingly winsome, with the love of Christ and the truth which we can offer them in the crucified and resurrected Christ.

Experience has shown me that when dealing with Mormons we have to expose their dependence on the Law, which will never save not one person, Gal. 3:11. Faith in Christ will never disappoint any who believe in Him who loved us and gave himself for us.

Cares book is truly a most valuable aid to our outreach to our Mormon neighbors and contacts.

Summary: Excellent Glossary
Review: Many Mormons and Protestants do not know why they appear to be talking past one another. The key is different definitions for the same English word. The Utah/Mormon culture was separate from that of the rest of the United States for seventy plus years. Some religious terms developed unique (to the rest of the U.S.) meaning. Many of the words in the "Mormoneese" language can not be found with the LDS meaning in any standard American dictionary.

Mark Cares reviewed official Mormon teaching material for men, women, and children in the l990s. He built a 40 page glossary of such unique words. Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox Christians should be most thankful. Mormons, "Saints," should be glad also -- helping them understand why the blank looks from their "traditional-Christian" friends. Like a lot of problems in life, it is the words we use.

Mark Cares' chapter on "Understand Their Culture" is the best coverage on the subject that I have ever seen. SPEAKING THE TRUTH IN LOVE should be in any major public or collegiate library--- easy to read, kind and gracious in style. It is on the cutting edge of understanding a major intermountain unique American culture.

Summary: Great Witnessing Technique
Review: Mark Cares's book is probably the best book I've read on evangelizing to Mormons. He writes in a loving and non-confrontationsal way, that, while it is intended for Christians who wish to evangelize to Mormons, is clearly practicing what he promotes.

The thing to remember about this book is that it is written by a christian for Christians. Rev. Cares was never a Mormon, but is a pastor in a predominantly Mormon community. He has a great deal of first hand experiance.

In the book, Cares promotes Christian Love in evangelism, and tries to carefully explain Mormon thought, doctrine and conceptions. The defining of the Mormon mindset is a great bonus in this book. A lot of the problems people have in evangilizing to Mormons comes from the different definations Christians and Mormons have for key words in Their faiths.

I've used this book in my personal evangelizing to Mormons. It has a been a huge asset. I'd suggest it to any Christian who hopes or intends to be doing evangelism among Mormons.

Summary: Informative and Compassionate Good News
Review: Over the past two years, my wife and I have read literally dozens of books about and from the LDS church. This is one of, if not the best I've read.

I appreciate Pastor Cares informative, yet sensitive approach-emphasizing both knowledge and compassion for friends, neighbors and even family members in the LDS church. While many Mormons are great, moral and upright people, they are in bondage to a religious system that demands perfection. Therefore, I also appreciate his caution not to argue theology, especially by "Majoring in the minors," but to share our witness as Christians in God's Law (those demands for perfection that can never be met) and Gospel (God's perfecting unconditional love-grace- in Jesus that has made us perfect by his life, death and resurrection).

I highly recommend this book to any one who either wants to know more about their neighbors' faith. I especially recommend this book to those who wish to go further and share the hope that is within them in the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Summary: Great Christian Witness Book
Review: Pastor Cares did an admirable job of not only outlining the Mormon faith, but also giving practical strategies for witnessing to them. "Speaking the Truth in Love to Mormons" is written in a very Gospel-orientated tone (something that is many times lacking in Christian books on the LDS church).

If you have a Mormon friend or neighbor, and are in need of a starting point to talk to them about Christianity, this very affordable book will not disappoint you.

Summary: Great overview on the LDS religion
Review: There are any number of books that cover the religion of Mormonism, but Cares' is one of the best. He deals with pertinent issues that don't fly over the average layperson's head. In addition he provides specific references that anyone can write into their Bibles (along with other LDS scriptures) in order to become efficient in sharing one's faith. Cares' attitude of "sharing in love" is also appreciated, as it is evident that he has no bone to pick or desires an "anti-Mormon" label. I have only two minor complaints. 1) There are a number of grammatical/ spelling/ layout errors that could easily be cleaned up with a good editor/ proofreader. 2) The book doesn't appear to be on a publisher's current list...this is a timeless piece that somebody ought to pick up. For Christians hoping to have a healthy dialogue with their LDS friends and neighbors, I suggest this as one of the books you purchase.

Summary: Love is the key to all doors
Review: They have the key, which is love. There is too much hate in the world, and they bring up love, which is always necessary in dealing with such touch religions--the other part being the truth, that sets us all free, for we need truth to see things clearly: I believe that this books contents are relvent to any discussion, and, I might persoanlly say, is got to be my favorite book, sicne they do emphasize the twin virtues of truth and love, unlike Brian Wilson who sung about "Love, and MErcy," which are also good, but not as compolete as this book, which has a fine index, I might add--indecies are half the book: an unindexed book is not worth reading.

Summary: Great Witnessing Technique
Review: This book has wonderful ideas on how to witness to the LDS people. The first time I read this book was four or five years ago when it completely changed my beliefs on how to witness to Mormons. I have recently been studying it again as a result of Mr. Cares' web site .... The book has been a great help in using this web site. If you have already read this book, the web site goes even further in learning about mormon culture and tangible witnessing ideas.

The book is a must read if you are interested in learning about the stresses that Mormonism places on its people. I live in Idaho and know many Mormons that are striving for perfection. This book has helped me to take the idea of Jesus' perfection to my friends.
