Rating: Summary: Still the best RSV in publication Review: For those who believe, as I do, that the RSV is still the best English translation around, the next question is which edition of the RSV? There are some good ones on the market. In particular, the RSV Study Bible (Cambridge) and the new RSV Centenary edition (Oxford 2003). In addition is the RSV Catholic Edition (Scepter Publishers). None of these other Bibles though, as good as they are, seriously rival this edition. Apart from all the extras, such as annotations, articles, etc. mention must be made of the eminently clear and readable font of this edition. I prefer this edition of the Annotated Bible to the newer one with the NRSV for two reasons: I prefer the RSV to the NRSV; and this edition is smaller and easier to carry around. A sensible RSV first choice. The font in the edition with the apocrypha is slighly bolder.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Choice Review: I RECCOMEND THIS BOOK. IT IS ABOUT AS UN-BIASED A READ AS YOU WILL FIND. IT DOES NOT HAVE A STRONG SLANT EITHER WAY, AS THE EDITOR SEEMS TO DO HIS BEST TO PRESENT THE BOOK "AS IS". I LOOKED OVER 20 DIFFERENT BIBLES BEFORE SETTLING ON THIS ONE.
Rating: Summary: The Standard Study Bible Review: When I was in theological school this edition of the New Oxford Annotated Bible (NOAB) was required for many classes. I used it and my Holman Study Bible (RSV) each day during and after class. I kept the same notes in each bible. I still believe that this edition is better for Christians to use in their study of the Scriptures. The 3rd edition of the NOAB departs from a Christian understanding of the OT and uses the NRSV text. The NRSV is a good translation, but is not literal enough for close study of a text. It is overly inclusive too. This edition of the NOAB uses the RSV, which remains one of the best translations of the English Bible ever published. The notes are good, but better in the NT than in the OT. It has fairly good cross-references. The _Harper Study Bible_ in the RSV has much better cross-references. If you can find a copy of that study bible in the RSV it would also be a good addition to your library. Cambridge still publishes it as an RSV study bible. Again, the NOAB in the RSV is a very, very good study bible. The font size is great. I recently had my hardback edition covered in genuine burgundy leather. I'll never be without it!
