Rating: Summary: St Cassian in devotional format Review: Fr Jerome Bertram's translation of Cassian's De institutis is irreproachable. The book itself is well-presented and ideal for devotional reading, being compact, unlittered with commentary and even including a bookmark -- which is actually a curious thing, since the Conferences would have been better suited for this purpose. In any event, the book was published in a series that is designed to make important works of Christian spirituality available to a wide audience. It fills this role admirably. But scholars who are interested in the Institutes for whatever reason will likely find it disappointing that there are very few references to related early Christian material, or indeed to contemporary secondary literature.
