Rating: Summary: A Refreshing Breath of Searching for Hope! Review: Upon my usual visit to [my local bookstore] searching for a new Craddock or Claypool or Barbara B Taylor, there's the latest of John's searches for Hope. Barbara herself calls this John's "cumulative wisdom of years to all whose hearts hunger for hope." The next accolade by Barbarba C Crafton urges you to take any chance to hear him preach or to sit with him! I totally agree... Upon re-reading Opening Blind Eyes & Mending the Heart, I was enriched by his latest search for "Avenues to Authenic Hope; What Can We Expect of God?; Hope and Forgiveness; Hope and the Life to Come!" These are picturesque Chapt headings. Nobody in my knowledge of literature can reach into the bag of creativity to pull out more descriptive titles to fill in that picture for ornamentation! After reading six of his books, sitting with him in two classes of Preaching Genesis & Preaching Jesus, spending a few times of relating to former & present Profs, I list his person-centered stories of Frederick Buechner, Sam Keen, Anthony DeMello, C S Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle, + one quote: "Whenever the word 'hope' comes up in conversation, our thoughts instinctively turn toward the future...Hope is certainly a stance of positive expectation in relation to the Great Not Yet." Adverbs and All! From retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
Rating: Summary: A Breath of Freshness to follow after suffering... Review: Upon my weekly visit to the local bookstore I searched for a new Brueggemann, Craddock, Claypool or Barbara B Taylor. Lo! Behold! I find there the latest of John Claypool's search of The HOPEFUL HEART! Barbara Brown calls this John's best, "cumulative wisdom of years to all whose hearts hunger for hope." The next accolade by Barbarba C. Crafton urges one to take any chance to hear him preach or to sit with him! I heartily agree.
Upon re-reading OPENING BLIND EYES & MENDING THE HEART, It was enriching to see his recent search titled, "Avenues to Authenic Hope, "What Can We Expect of God? "Hope and Forgiveness, "Hope and the Life to Come!"
These are picturesque chapter headings! No one else today writing religious literature reaches into their bag of creativity to pull-out such descriptive title pictures for personal inspiration! Two good friends in retirement have experienced Chemotherapy after cancer. Both read this book soon after C. S. Lewis' GRIEF OBSERVED. "We received A freshness of deep help from John Claypool's book!"
After reading most of his books, sitting to audit his classes of "Preaching Genesis & Preaching Jesus"; spending a time for relating to former & present Profs, I love his person-centered stories of Frederick Buechner, Sam Keen, Tony DeMello, C. S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle in her quote: "Whenever the word, Hope comes up in conversation, our thoughts instinctively turn toward the future. Hope is certainly a stance of positive expectation in relation to the Great Not-Yet." Adverbs and All! From long-retired, Chaplain Fred W Hood
