Rating: Summary: A beauty Review: Beautiful. My only complaint is apparetnly there is a typo somewhere?! See another's review.
Rating: Summary: A Great Buy!! Review: I have been looking for a genuine leather RSV for a long time, and this Bible is worth-the-wait! The binding is superb. The type face is very easy on the eyes. Contrary to what one writer stated, the text does not bleed through the paper. This is a quality product at an unbelievably low price. I am glad I got one before they go "out of stock."Gala Rothchild
Rating: Summary: Great Bible That is Kind of Confusing... Review: I went looking for a good leather-bound Bible of the RSV translation with complete deuterocanon, and I found this one, which is durable and nice to read. I think the RSV is probably one of the best translations out there for traditional liturgical and catholic Christians (I am a traditional Anglican). The RSV generally fits this purpose much better than the politically correct NRSV, whose inclusive language obscures messianic passages. There is no comparison between the beautiful RSV psalms and the plain NRSV psalms. Needless to say, I enjoy this edition of the RSV. It includes the entire Roman Catholic and Orthodox deuterocanon, 3+4 Maccabees, Psalm 151, and all the rest. However, the 50th anniversary edition I have has a few publication errors. First, the Genesis 37:15 typo a former reviewer mentioned is in mine as well. Also, Zechariah 11:2 has some type missing (which I wrote in). And then there is perhaps the strangest thing about this RSV, and that is the New Testament. It seems as if the Gospels/Acts (and Hebrews too) come from the regular RSV, and the rest of the NT comes from the RSV Catholic Edition. I own the RSV New Oxford Annotated Bible, and my 50th anniversary edition does not always match up with it. For instance, at Romans 9:5 the regular RSV reads in a way to not refer to Jesus' deity, whereas my 50th edition RSV reads, "Christ who is God over all," matching the Catholic Edition exactly, which my brother owns. The same is true of other instances in the NT outside the gospels/Acts. See Romans 5:5, where the regular RSV reads "which" when referring to the Holy Spirit, but my 50th Ann. edition reads "who," matching the RSV Catholic Edition. I compared the RSV Catholic Edition changes listed in my brother's RSV CE and about 80% of the catholic changes are in my 50th Anniversary edition RSV. Perhaps I got a weird printing. Or Perhaps I am unaware of some alternate RSV edition out there that is different from the RSV New Oxford Annotated Text, and this explains why my 50th Anniversary edition reads differently at places. Either way, I enjoy the edition as I have it. The changes from the regular RSV make the New Testament more catholic and traditional, and for me this is a plus. Overall, this is a sturdy and visually appealing RSV Bible that Christians of all stripes will find helpful.
Rating: Summary: decent binding, readable, but even more typos Review: Other reviews have pointed about textual typos. I found 2 typos pertaining to chapter markings. The typos that I found combined with those reported by others indicates that there are more than likely even more not mentioned yet.
Aside from that, the text is readable and the leather is quite decent for the price. While it lacks references, it is not a straight text bible as it has paragraph headers.
You would think that something marketed as a "50th Anniversary Edition" would not be so fraught with errors. The actual typos combined with the careless marketing is a 2 star deduction in my book.
If only Cambridge would offer a RVSCE reference edition. They seem to care about bibles, not so sure about Oxford now.
Rating: Summary: Shared Golden Anniversary Review: There's nothing quite like Genuine Cowhide to lend a book an aura of opulence and permanence, characteristics sadly lacking in today's purely functional and economy-based publishing industry. The celebratory and commemorative focus of this publication, as well as its plush executive presentation, have prompted its selection in a representative capacity for this review, which represents in itself another landmark Golden anniversary of equal significance to Amazon shoppers: Cladinoro's 50th book review! This book, still popular and significant enough to be published in such a luxurious Anniversary Edition 50 long years after its original appearance, is a worthy subject for this genuine Cowhide Golden Anniversary Review.
Any 50-year-old book will inevitably raise some issues of currency and relevance, but these problems are compensated easily with Genuine Cowhide Burgundy binding. Apparently some misprint problems have also crept in since this book first appeared 50 years ago. These will hopefully be cleared up in time for the 100th Anniversary Edition, for the preparation of which I believe the publishers are already attempting to procure significant quantities of extremely rare "Texas Red" Book-Binding-Grade Cowhide.
In anticipation of the improved 100th Anniversary Edition, then, this 50th Anniversary Edition receives a suspended rating of 3 stars. Cladinoro looks forward to guiding Amazon shoppers through many more purchases, for many more Genuine Cowhide Anniversaries to come!
Rating: Summary: Genesis 37:15 misprint Review: This is a beautifully bound Bible and just the right size. I've been looking for a new, leather-bound edition of this particular Bible for a long time. Unfortunately, Oxford spent more time on the binding than on making certain the edition was correct in terms of editing and proofreading. I've already found one misprint in Genesis 37:15 (the pronoun "you" is left out of a sentence). Joseph is asked: "What are seeking?" as opposed to "What are you seeking?" I wonder if there are other misprints. I contacted (via email) an editor at Oxford. I am hoping that they will re-print this Bible with a leather binding and pay closer attention to the accuracy of the Scripture texts. I was so enthused about the re-release of this version in leather binding and so disappointed to find poor editing 37 chapters into Genesis. I would recommend holding off on purchasing this particular edition until Oxford fixes this (and maybe other) error and issues a second, corrected printing. Again, this is a great Bible. I am bummed out that the quality is only skin deep. Come on, Oxford University Press, you can do better than this!
Rating: Summary: An Outstanding Bargain for a Classic Translation Review: What a great buy! The genuine cowhide leather of this edition is soft and supple and yet extremely durable. The paper is also excellent! Very clear type makes this edition exceptionally readable. The print is large enough to satisfy even my older eyes. This Bible just FEELS good in your hands! The 50th Anniversary Edition is slim, even with the inclusion of the Apocrypha. A joy to carry anywhere. The RSV is one of the most accurate translations available and it is nice to be able to purchase one that is made with such craftsmanship. As a chaplain, this Bible will serve me well. I plan to use it for private reading as well as in public functions such as weddings and funerals. It is just the right size!
