Summary: Engaging from the first page
Review: A wonderfully written and fascinating tale of the midwives Puah and Shiphrah. Brenda Ray brought the characters to life unfolding a story filled with romance, inspiration and gripping drama. A very enjoyable book; I was a bit sad for it to end. I found The Midwife's Song to be a more compelling read than The Red Tent.

Summary: A pleasure to read
Review: I heard about this book on the Dr. Laura radio show. In fact, I won it as part of an email contest. I read it in two days, stealing time from my busy life to read it whenever I could. It was a very enjoyable book to read - makes you realize there are real people, emotions, etc. behind the stories in the bible. I have known some of the story of Moses' birth since I was a child but this put it into a much more realistic perspective. Someone else's review mentioned that there was a trilogy planned - I hope so!

Summary: An inspiring story of love and faith
Review: I picked this book up thinking I would learn about midwifery traditions in ancient Egypt...specifically the use of herbs and non-invasive techniques in childbirth. This book does not address these topics in depth, what I did find, however, is an inspiring story of love and faith. I was also moved by how the biblical midwives were regarded with respect and reverence. She was not "threatened" by others, i.e., doctors or whatever they were called then. I've read other books about midwives, mostly those in the turn of the century and also one about a modern-day midwife, what they do and how they do it has not changed much but how they are regarded by the medical community, the public and their clients has. Thank you for giving us a heroine !!!

Summary: The Midwife's Song
Review: I received this book from listening to the Dr. Laura show and I put it away until my vacation to read it. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It is a wonderful story about Puah. This author took a few facts from the Bible and made a beautiful life story of a midwife. She brought Puah to life and her romance with Hattush. It was Great. I felt as though I was actually in Egypt, it was incredible. Thanks for the opportunity to read this book.

Summary: This book helped me to "experience" the Biblical story.
Review: I very much enjoyed this book. First, I found that the author was very skilled at telling a story. Her language and approach made it all very engaging. Second, I found that this book really drew me deeper into the Biblical story in a devotional way.

Even though much of it was fiction and, by nature, speculative, it built upon the Biblical narrative in a way that honored the original story.

Summary: How refreshing...
Review: It was wonderful to read about the life of Puah... Being a Certified Nurse Midwife.. and a Christian... I thought this book did a great job of showing the importance of Faith...

Summary: A Tale of courage and justice hard won.
Review: Puah is a Hebrew midwife in the Land of Egypt where Pharaoh rules like a god. He has proclaimed that all male Hebrew babies are to be slain at birth. Puah is an instrument of the one true God and cannot follow such a command. The story goes on to tell of the coming of Moses in the midst of this strife.

This is a book with more than the story of Moses; it is a love story that will reach the very depths of your heart. The author, who is also a midwife, had me in the palm of her hands by the second chapter. Her characters were so real, and their emotions so strong, I am still moved by them now. This is a wonderful story that is fast moving and written with a flow that makes the pages fly by. If you enjoy this book, another similar book of equal quality is QUEENMAKER by India Edgehill. Summary: The way it may have been
Review: This book provides a very vivid picture of how the events may have unfolded around the time of Moses's birth. It is nice to be able to understand the characters and how they may have acted and felt. At its best, this tale is both informative and moving.

However, this is not a piece of great literature. The story is, sometimes painfully, contrived and trite. The repetition of phrases like "fine linen" and awkwardly used flashbacks quickly become grating.

The story of Puah is compelling, but the telling of it is not. Despite its weakness, this is still a good read for those who want new insight into a very familiar story.
