Rating: Summary: Interesting Theory Review: The greatest thing this book has going for itself is that Dr. Humphreys (unlike one of his well-known reviewers) is an excellent writer. His book was easy to read and included some helpful graphics, which is why I gave it 3 stars.
However after reading the book I found it interesting the the young-earth creationist camp would be so eager to embrace this White Hole Cosmology.... it is simply a variation of the Big Bang theory. Humphreys merely combines the standard Big Bang theory with Special (God's supernatural) Creation in a way that is receiving criticism from fellow YECs and scientists alike.
Rating: Summary: Intriguing Theory Review: The scope of this book is different from other famous Creationist books, such as Jonathan Safarti's "Refuting Evolution" (highly reccomend both 1 & 2). It seeks to present a model of creation consistent with a literal translation, and at the same time harmonize scientific observations pointing to a universe older than a couple thousands of years old.In response to a review entitled "Pathetic!": This person does not seem to understand the relativity of time, and hence cannot connect an old universe with a young earth - showing not only a lack of understanding of physics but also of what Humphreys is stating. The book is short, and understandably so, for it caters toward the average reader and not a scientific community. It gives an overview, as well as brief mathematic formulas to support the assertion of a young Earth and old universe, thereby upholding the literal interpretation of Genesis chapter 1. The writing is concise and easy to understand, providing diagrams to better visualize scientific concepts that are hard to fathom on paper. One aspect that makes this book a valuable read, even if you reject Dr. Humphreys' model, is how it explains how some famous evolution/creationist models are fallacious, illuminating some theological as well as scientific problems with popular theories including the "gap theory." Even as Humphreys himself admits, the book is not meant to be the beginning and end of the Creationist debate, but to merely provide a model that can hold up to biblical scrutiny (as well as scientific concepts such as red shifts). For what the book sets out to accomplish, it does so admirably. A must read for those interested creationism.
Rating: Summary: Pathetic! Review: There is a humorous side to this book and its VHS counterpart. Dr. Humphreys stands there holding a Bible (on VHS), published by "Through the Bible Radio Network" with notes by Dr. J. Vernon McGee. (The cover and logo on the Bible are clearly visible in the video.) In the notes on Genesis Dr. McGee clearly states (refering to Genesis) " . . . the first 11 chapters cover a minimum of 2000 years. It could easily be a thousand times longer." That's a direct quote! And that is from a leading Christian Bible scholar, evangelical, creationist, and teacher. . . heard 'round the world and translated into many languages. I have heard Dr. McGee many times (in person) and he clearly thought that the universe could easily be "trillions" of years old, without any problem with the Bible's teaching. McGee said God is not limited . . . He can take as long as He wishes. McGee was a Greek and Hebrew scholar. The book, "Starlight and Time" is pathetic with nothing to offer except, maybe, amusement as to how far a "young earther" will go to "twist" a view to fit observed facts and the Truth of the Bible (as he mis-understands it).
Rating: Summary: Execellent challenge to the idea of an old universe. Review: This book is very understandable to someone without a physics background and yet the author provides the math at the back to support his theory. I have a physics degree and his mathematics and theories held true. I also shared it with one of my physics professors who has a Ph.D. in physics and he found nothing wrong with Dr. Humphreys theories or math. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever wondered how the universe could be young, and yet we can get light from distant galaxies. To answer one of the critics above: The Big Bang Theory itself states that the whole universe was at one time together in a very small volume. There is your mass to allow for gravitational time dilation.
