Summary: A lovely story, beautifully told, about family relationships
Review: Christmas on Jane Street first intrigued me since my name is Jane, and I've spent time in New York City and also rural New England, both settings in this book.

It's a beautifully written tale about how the people of New York City befriend, and in turn are befriended by, a family from rural Vermont. The father in the family comes to believe that his daughter has turned to 'city' values, and feels that she is no longer his best friend. In the end, the meaning of family and the holiday spirit is poignantly brought to light.

This book is very relevant to today's families because it talks to the misunderstandings, conflicts, and - ultimately - love, bonding parents and their children. (And it's so well written that I read it completely in one sitting.)

Christmas on Jane Street would be a great gift from a parent to a teen or adult child, or to anyone who believes in the holiday spirit of love and forgiveness...

Summary: More than just a holiday book!
Review: Disguised as a book about Christmas, this is really a touching story about fathers and their daughters; and the sometimes clumsy struggle that occurs as they BOTH mature. A comic and heartfelt story which is certain to touch every dad and his daughter, I will buy many copies of Christmas On Jane Street for the upcoming holiday season.

Summary: Description and Synopsis
Review: Every holiday season for ten years, Billy Romp, his wife, and their three young children have spent nearly a month living in a tiny camper and selling Christmas trees on Jane Street in New York City. They arrive from Vermont the day after Thanksgiving and leave just in time to make it home for Christmas morning--and for a few weeks they transform a corner of the Big Apple into a small village community.

The French baker across the street keeps them supplied with fresh rolls and bread. The dry cleaner around the corner cleans their quilted vests and down jackets free of charge. A neighbor extends a power line from his basement, winds it through high tree limbs and into the camper to keep their little heater humming. The local meter maid "forgets" to ticket the camper. And, in the ultimate statement of affection and trust, Jane Street neighbors deliver apartment keys to the Romps with open invitations to come by anytime for a hot shower, shave, and nap.

For the Romps, the Christmas tree business is also a serious business. A good sales season can make the year for this frugal family. Under tremendous financial pressure this particular year, Billy is counting on his family to pitch in as they always do, when he faces an unexpected obstacle: His oldest child and best helper, Ellie, sets her sights on attending the extravagant "Nutcracker" ballet and testing her wings outside her close-knit family. How Billy reconciles Ellie's transformation from a tomboyish, female version of himself and into a graceful, independent young lady is at first a struggle and later a revelation. Along the way, he must learn how to let his daughter dream her own dreams--even when they diverge from his own. In setting her free, Billy learns the ultimate lesson of Christmas.

CHRISTMAS ON JANE STREET is about the transformative power of love--of parent and child, of merchant and customer, of stranger and neighbor. The ideal Christmas story, it is about the lasting and profound difference that one person can make to a family and one family can make to a community.

Billy Romp, his wife, and their three children live in rural Shoreham, Vermont--when they're not spreading Christmas cheer in Manhattan.

Wanda Urbanska, the co-author with her husband Frank Levering of SIMPLE LIVING and MOVING TO A SMALL TOWN lives near Mount Airy, North Carolina.

Summary: A lesson in how *NOT* to raise children
Review: First of all in many sections the writing was choppy and amateurish
-- Patti sunk her eyes into mine --
Doesn't that give ya a purty picture? (gag)

Most importantly though, I just plain did not like the story.
Ellie is a selfish, spoiled brat in my opinion. She drops her father and leaves him hanging at the tree stand needing help, and pursues her own agenda to which her father has vocally opposed. Then she is out all night and doesn't even call ... and how old is she?? All of 10 or something.
If my daughter went so thoroughly against me and acted as downright selfish and pouty and peer dependent as Ellie did then I would wonder "Where have I failed?"

And to top it off ... the dad ends up taking the blame on himself for the way he acted, (which was like a PARENT) so they can all be a happy family again.

I believe in child centered parenting ... to a point ... but I thought this was ridiculous ... It was a lesson in how NOT to parent in my opinion.

I know I'll be labeled the Scrooge but if this is a 5 star book (true story to boot!) then the shallowness of the world has reached an all time low.

Summary: Small book BIG story
Review: I first heard about this book when I read that the Romp family was riding from Vermont to Alaska on a bicycle built for four and pulling a trailer containing the youngest family member. I ventured onto their WEB site and noticed that the father of this family had written a book about selling Christmas trees in New York each year. This interested me and I obtained the book. The first evening I had the book, I started reading it and couldn't quit reading until I finished the book. This is a wonderful little book with a BIG story. I was inspired by the tale and it brought tears to my eyes during one part. I'm going to buy multiple copies and give them to all my friends for Christmas!!

Summary: Good Christmas Read
Review: I heard about this book in a Country Living magazine. I kept the title in my mind for a couple of years until I ran across it again and bought in on Amazon.com. It was worth the wait. The book is about a family who sells Christmas trees every year on Jane Street in NYC. It reminds you of the importance of family and confirms that everyone needs their family and even strangers can become your family. This book reconfirms the value of caring about others.

Summary: Heart felt story of family, love, and the Christmas spirit
Review: My husband and I personally know the Romp's and just want to give them the highest of accolades for this excellent book Billy has written. It really makes you smile and get warm and fuzzy inside reading about this Vermont family that moves to the city each year to sell Christmas trees and the friendships and bonds that have developed over the years. Christmas on Jane Street is the story about the love between a father and his daughter, family and friends, and the unconditional generosity and true caring people can give to one another. I would highly recommend this book for anyone and everyone.
