Rating: Summary: BORING! Review: This book was so boring. I don't understand why it needed to be written. My hats off to people who finished it. It just didn't appeal to me or make sense to me. And WAY TOO fictional for my tastes....
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, must read for an alternative viewpoint Review: This book will forever change your perception of the New Testament. Considering what Jesus (Yeshua aka The Cristos) really stood for, this could be more fact than fiction. Take a leap, read the book and believe. This is one book I read every few months and every time I read it I come away with something new.
Rating: Summary: I love this book Review: This is a beautiful book, and I have read it several times already. Not only is the story great, very involving and well written, but the imagery and historical references are accurate and scholarly. As a woman interested in the often under-represented female perspective on historical events, this book fills a need for fully fleshed out mythical perspectives on life. At first I wondered if the alternate take on Christian myth would be sort of like a vegetarian version of a meat dish, interesting but not really enjoyable or necessary. Instead I found myself immersed in a completely plausible reinterpretation of a universal story which pulled me in and then expanded my understanding of myth and mystery. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: A blending of ancient Paganism and Christianity Review: This wonderful, well-written book blends the gospel story with the ancient Pagan religions of the Goddess Inanna-Ishtar and Her descent, the trials of Isis, and the dying-and-rising god motif. It is a tribute to Kinstler's skill and imagination that her version is totally believable. She takes familiar stories and gives them a new twist. Her Mary Magdalene is a priestess, a mother, a lover, and a person who struggles with fear and doubt while trying to live a life devoted to her Goddess. I own this book and have read and re-read it several times during the last few years.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Club Book Review: We read this for book club and it generated one of the best discussions we have ever had. We talked about this book for almost two solid hours, with no digressions. Our book club is known for its digressions when the book cannot hold our attention. Some of us liked it, some of us didn't, and the discussion was on! The general consensus was that we were glad we read it, and it was an interesting premise, and then opinions diverged. Read it and decide for yourself what you think about it. I myself really enjoyed it because it was vivid, imaginative, and educational (to a point: some characters do not coincide with their New Testament counterparts). Educational regarding The Goddess, whose worship I know nothing about. If you are in a book club, read it. If you are intrigued by the premise (the Passion of Christ from the eyes of Mary Magdelene, the high priestess in the service of The Goddess), give it 50 pages and decide whether or not to continue. I couldn't give it more than three stars because opinions widely diverged on this book in my book club, so I settled on three, which was the average of all 12 women in the club. It's an interesting read!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful, magical tale! Review: When my friend gave me this book to read, I was very sceptical. I have been an atheist for many years, although I was familiar with Catholicism and its teachings. Today, many religions base their teachings on male-centered principles. It was so refreshing to finally come across a story of Jesus (Yeshua) and Mari Magdalene from a woman's perspective. The characters in this book are so rich, so ALIVE, so believeable. A must read for those practicing religion or not!!!
