Rating: Summary: The one book my students talk about before class!! Review: The Holy Man cuts away the fluff from our everday existence and cuts to the core of the human condition. Her short parables about jealousy, anger, vanity and many more, reach
deeply into your heart rather than your head. This is the one book I teach to entry level junior college students that they come to class talking amongst themselves
about how good the book is, even before it is due.
Although at times a bit didactic, Trott is usually able to make her chartacters very believable.
Rating: Summary: Insightful Review: The Holy Man is a book that is difficult to put down once you have read the first 2 chapters. Trott, through the various characters waiting in line to seek wisdom from the Holy Man, ponders the many frailties in the human condition. In simple, susinct language the reader is drawn to the life of Joe, the Holy Man, and Anna, the one that is to follow.
Rating: Summary: Joy to read Review: The Holy Man was such a pleasurable book to read. The writing style was simple, but the meaning was so deep. The Holy Man lives on a hill and people from every surrounding village, and some from even farther, come to ask his advice on every matter. There are small chapters of about 4 pages that introduce some of the pilgrims that have made their way to the Holy Man's house. The advice and words he dispenses are beautiful amd sometimes humorous.
Rating: Summary: A Lyrical Pilgrimage Review: This book is a metaphor (in the tradition of the Canterbury Tales) for the various journeys each of us take to find wisdom. Often we feel that someone or a place will give us the results we seek in life, but eventually the realization grows on us that the answers are already programmed in ourselves. In her writing, Susan Trott takes us along for the ride as she slices into many perspectives on the road to the Holy Man. Highly recommended reading... but give yourself some thinking time in between the chapters. It will help you reconnect with your beliefs in an authentic way.
Rating: Summary: Simply wonderful, wonderfully simple Review: This is a book you will want to share, and give as a gift. Once you begin, you will want to continue along on the path with the others.
Rating: Summary: To be read again and again Review: This is a small book with 34 short descriptions of people weall know in some way, even ourselves. I was fascinated with the waySusan Trott's characters got what they wanted or needed, sometimes without knowing they had been in the presence of The Holy Man. The humor is subtle but very appropriate and made this reader smile many times. I ordered copies for very special friends as I read it the second time. Tucked into my suitcase The Holy Man traveled through three states. I ordered 4 more copies for Christmas gifts. All brought rave reviews. Everyone who reads should have a copy but my retirement income won't allow me to be that generous. One reader was reminded of The Listener by Taylor Caldwell which I too had read years ago. This is a book I wish I could have written. It is just as F-A-S-C-I-N-A-T-I-N-G in the fourth reading.
Rating: Summary: The Holy Man Review: This is not a book of Christian Fiction. It was written by a Buddist.
Rating: Summary: Go Joe!!!!! -- Susan Trott sure has a way with words! Review: This small, quickly read volume has no superfluity. The pilgrims and the Holy Man are contemporary yet timeless characters. Ms. Trott's genius for revealing the essence of human nature in each brief chapter is unique. I found this book to be unforgettable. I have given copies to family members and friends. You will, too.
Rating: Summary: Thank goodness for insomnia Review: This tiny, little, unimposing book .... what a surprise. I keep hoping for Susan Trott's insomnia to return so we can have a third installment. Try to find the hardback version because you may want to keep this book with you for a while. It's been two years (?) and we're still going back to it! "One-Click" on this book right now.
Rating: Summary: Wisdom for all Review: This wonderfull novel has practical insights on many of man's plauges ranging from anger to forgivness. Which are all solved by a wise old buddist styled man named Joe. His teaching range from solving peoples fear of death or inability to let a loved one go. He explains the importance of ever day and that a nice man is also a happy one. Each day their is another common problem solved with a poetic style of unforgettable talent. Each chapter fits the next and the story greatly captures many great lessons. All readers will find lots of love and simple from this easy to read book.
