Rating: Summary: Not just fir Christmas Review: This is a beautiful little story that is just the right length to read in a single sitting. That is what I did, and then I went back and read it again. The message of the story is two-fold. First, to remind us that the first Christmas gift ever given was not wrapped up and placed underneath a tree, it had nothing to do with St. Nicholas, but it was placed in a box. That gift was the Son of God that He gave to us because he loved us so much. God knew what was going to happen to his son, but he gave him to us anyway so that we would be saved from the devil. The second lesson was learned by the father in this story - to spend less time at the office and more with his family. There were times when I had to wipe away the tears while reading this book. It really is very touching to see how an old woman adopts the family she has hired to take care of her aging mansion. In return, they grow quite fond of her and share many things with her. She shares her Christmas Box however and reminds the family what the true meaning of Christmas is. Why 5 stars?: A very touching tale to remind everyone what the true meaning of Christmas: because God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that all who believe in him may not perish, but have eternal life. The tale is just the right length - easily read in one or two sittings. The lessons apply to all seasons and this book should be read all year round, not just at Christmas time.
Rating: Summary: thought provoking Review: I bought this box at christmas. One night while waiting for my 5 year old to get ready for bed I picked up this book. I finished the first chapter before he came in then I couldn't wait to finish reading the book. However I couldn't finish it that night because my son wanted me to read him picture books. So the next day, I started the second chapter. As it turned out even though it was a very short story it took me days to read it and as I took my time on reading, I reflected on what the author was writing. I felt that as each day was passing on the character lives, that they became people that I felt close to. When Jenna talked to Mary about time with her father it may my heart ache. Don't we all put off time now and then and forget about how fast our children grow? The book made me laugh, cry and reflect. So much, that now the most important thing in my life is my child. Work can wait my child can not. My child and I now wear angel pin pals so that we will never be apart from each other. A MUST READ BOOK.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful and Touching Story Review: If you can read, you should read this book. If you can't, you should get someone to read it to you. The "Christmas Box" was a beautiful family tale. The story is extremely short, taking only a couple of hours to read.
Rating: Summary: A Beloved Classic For All Seasons Review: I had enjoyed the tv movie of this with Richard Thomas and Maureen O'Hara, but never liking to read a book once I've seen the movie, I avoided picking this one up. Surprisingly, I won it while playing 'Dirty Santa' at a neighborhood party and felt compelled to read it. What a treat! This is one of the most heartwarming stories and probably the best by the wonderful Richard Paul Evans. Readers will be enchanted by the story of the young father who with his wife and daughter take up residence with an elderly lady in order to make ends meet. Instead of mere companions and housekeepers to the woman, they become dear and trusted friends. They, like the reader, are mystified by her past and want to know more about the Christmas box in the attic and the secret of the letters it holds. This book answers the profound question, 'What is the first gift of Christmas.' As every parent knows, it is a parent's love for a child and without being overly sappy on the religion angle, this book beautifully illustrates God's love for His children in sending His Son. Speaking directly to parents who have lost children, this book will appeal to everyone who believes in Christmas and the importance of cherishing family. For an uplifting renewal of your committment to yourself and to your family, read this book.
Rating: Summary: If you ever forget what life is truly for.... Review: Two years ago, in the middle of July, I went to the library with my daughter. She wanted to pick out a few books as she had just learned to read and I wanted to promote her eagerness. Whilst she was looking, I wondered to myself and thought, "Gee, when was the last time I read something good?". Looking thru the vast number of books on the best sellers list, The Christmas Box, in it's beautiful covering, caught my eye. "How silly, I thought - reading a Christmas book int he middle of July!!" But, I got it anyway and that night, never put it down til I was finished, wet cheeks and all. The very next day I went back and got both "Time Piece, The Letter" and read them through as well. What a wonderful experience and journey.... Richard Paul Evans has done a remarkable series.... and if you do want to have "a good Read", and want to escape into the twists and turns of the lives entangled in his story, take the time, you will enjoy every minute. And when you are finished, you can also read "The Locket", a new series he has started, and hopefully will unravel a few more titles... Thanks Richard! :)

Rating: Summary: Tender and Sweet and an Easy Read Review: The Christmas Box is marketed exactly as it should be -- a prettily packaged "gift book" with a melt-your-heart story. While Richard Paul Evans certainly gives us an easy read with a good message (such a rare gem these days!), his writing does tend to fall a bit flat at times, succumbing to unnecessary detail or, in some instances, cliche. If this writing style doesn't bother you, you will absolutely love this book. It's a refreshing change from much that is out there, and you will most likely sigh contentedly after you've finished the last page. Pick up this book for a light read -- if anything, it's definitely the kind of story that will draw you right in and keep you reading. And it's just the right size to squeeze into somebody's Christmas stocking as well! ---- Jill Schafer Boehme, Author of MY LIMA BEANS ARE ALLERGIC TO MY SPOON and Editor of MOMMY! Rating: Summary: BEAUTIFUL, MOVING HOLIDAY TALE.......... Review: Rick and Keri are struggling young parents, with 4-year-old daughter Jenna when they answer an ad in the local papers for caretakers of a large house and elderly woman. In exchange for room and board, the family is charged with minimal household duties, among them being cooking meals for Mary, the matriarch of the house. It soon becomes clear that what Mary wants most is that feeling of family--in time for Christmas. During the move in the Parkin mansion, Rick discovers an old Christmas box in the attic, filled with what appears to be love letters. He soon learns that these are actually Mary's legacy of love to her long dead baby daughter--and that he and his family's reason for being the caretakers of Mary and the house have nothing to do with finances, but everything to do with recapturing the real reasons and joys of Christmas.
