Rating: Summary: A horrible tribute to the legacy of Druidry and the Celts Review: Not only is the book clearly misogynistic, but is filled with gross inaccuracies and outright lies. Should be listed under "fiction"; that's the best light it can be read under.
Rating: Summary: mixed bag Review: I found that there are infact many inaccuracies in this book--as other reviews have pointed out. But if one keeps this in mind and reads it with one hand on a factual account of history (little hard anyway as Druids did not keep actual written records) then the lessons can be insightful and helpful. I like the style of the book, using teaching stories to get points across but I had to remember about the inaccuracies as well. So, read and judge for yourself. But keep looking as well as this is certainly not the only book on Druidry.
Rating: Summary: 21 Lessons of Hogwash Review: As a modern-day student of Druidry, I cannot recommend this book, it is full of gross inaccuracies; to name two: (1) Monroe states that pumpkins were a "sacred plant" of the Druids, however pumpkins are indigenous to North America and were utterly unknown to the ancient Celts; (2) he recommends the ingestion of mistletoe -- mistletoe is a very toxic plant, and should *NOT!* be ingested in any form. I would recommend "The Apple Branch" by Alexei Kondratiev, also on this site, and books in its bibliography for those interested.
Rating: Summary: this isn't "real" Druidry Review: Monroe has tried to pass off invention and falacy as tradition. References are made to New World plants in the Old World before communication bewtween the continents. He incorporates misogyny in a field where there is no room for it. Read this book for the fun of finding its failures.
Rating: Summary: A Must For The Seekers Of The Old Ways Review: This book is something that many people have needed for a long time. It's bardic method of teaching the lessons is accurate and enlightning. This isn't neo-druidism, this isn't classical druidism, this IS druidism. As close to the original as you are likely to get. Now go and buy the second book, THE LOST BOOKS OF MERLYN.
Rating: Summary: This book interprited the Druids wondefully! Review: This book has everything, the legend of Arthur, and the religion of the Druids. If you want a good book on the Druids please, please read this book, it is great!
Rating: Summary: Learning made FUN with Mythical Lore. Review: As a Druid on my learning quest, this book is full of information. One who sees past the mythical lore will find useful knowledge towards their spiritual quest. It is up to the reader to believe or disbelieve. The knowledge gained and how you apply it, is in your hands. Search and enjoy!!!!
Rating: Summary: Over-hyped and Under-Thought Review: This book is poorly researched and is highly innacurate both towards modern spiritual practices and mesopagan druidism. To anyone looking for serious information upon which to base your beliefs: look elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: Why all the good reviews? Review: This book, while certainly amusing, does not border on the "truth" of anything, be it historical druidic practices, modern druidism, or even spiritual enlightenment. For instance, if Monroe is so enlightened, why does he claim that women are less spiritually evolved than men? If he's so enlightened, why does he spend so much time criticizing the Christian faith? Certainly, some one who was *truly* spiritually advanced needn't spend so much time bashing other people's faiths. Monroe's knowledge of other topics is also sadly lacking. He advocates the ingesting of mistletoe (eating one berry has been known to cause fatalities among children, and the oil of mistletoe is even more potent still). Also, if you put wormwood (which can cause miscarriage in pregnant women, though he neglects to mention that) in vodka, it creates a substance known as "absinthe" which can get you jailed for a few years *for merely OWNING,* let alone drinking, the substance. All in all, I found this book to be a highly misinformed work, both historically, medicinally, and spiritually. If you're looking for some good works on the Druids, try reading a work from the historical section, or at the very least, *do not* read this book. Unless, of course, you're not looking for any amount of intelligence in the books you read.
Rating: Summary: It is a must for every begining druid and for the curious Review: This is a very great book I enjoyed every minute of this book. It teaches the reader the ways of druidism in the ways of stories. It does this through 21 lessons hence the name. Before each lesson there is a story that complies to the lesson. If you are a druid or someone curious about becomeing one than please do yourself a favor get this book. thank you
