Summary: An Excellent Hindu Primer
Review: This is the best introduction to Hinduism that I have ever come across. The author is knowledgeable about his subject and the text is easy to read yet thorough. There is no attempt to "explain away" or convince anyone of anything, but simply tries to explain everthing to the best of his ability. The inconsistencies are not ignored but addressed directly and after a reading of this book, the religion seems a great deal more valid than I had understood it to be. The authors personal opinions do come out in several places, but as Hinduism is not an organised religion and because of the vastness of its scope, this is unavoidable. An excellent read and well worth the price.

Summary: THE COMPLETE HINDUISM REFERENCE BOOK...
Review: This book is a must read for every Hindu, student, Indologist, teacher and seeker. A great reference book for all those studying comparative religion.

The author, Ed Viswanathan, covers a great deal of subject matter on Hinduism, whose true name is the Sanatan Dharma ( the Everlasting Religion).

He shows great skill and understaning while keeping such a profound religion clear and well arranged. A reader can look up most subjects at a glance in the index.

Mr Viswanathan shows the all encompassing inclusiveness of the world's oldest religion. He also shows many parallels between Christianity and Hinduisms great Scriptures. Hiduism is ideed blessed to have so many God-relized prophets both ancient and modern. The author effectively answers the many misconceptions other faiths have about Hinduism, and shows us that "Brahman", the one true God that Hindus knew about, long , long before Abraham, has no limit to his manifestations. Hinduism's all encompassing nature makes room for all true prophets of all true religions, as well as for the great difference in human needs on the path of the spirit.

The author brings us right up to the present century with brief outlines of the great yoga systems that are now sweeping the modern world. This is no doubt one of India's greatest contributions to human civilization. The yogis of India perfected the ways to reach SELF-REALIZATION into a complete and flawless Science. Kriya Yoga was brought to the West by Paramahansa Yogananda who wrote the classic "AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOGI", which has changed the lives of millions of people. He was able by his God centered life to show the west a living example of India's great saints and sages.

"AM I A HINDU?" will greatly help to break down the narrow views of many who find other religions so strange. The book presents an ideal setting, a caring father shares a lifetime of faith with his growing son. Hopefully many parents will follow this much needed example. Your children will have s! urely have a rich inheritance.

Summary: A short book with a deep content
Review: I have just read this book and while it only took me a few setings to go from beginning to end I will be thinking about what it had to say for a great deal longer. Am I A Hindu covers a lot of gound, and so can not really go into a lot of detail but what is found I think is just what is needed, and from the things you learn it is easy to take your study deeper if you wish. If you know little about the philosophy of India but wish to learn more, and you could only get one book this would be the one.

Summary: I am a well read Hindu;still I find it extremly useful...
Review: I read this book few years ago;even today I find it extremly useful as a guide or as a reference. I have not seen another book explaining in "layman's language"; some of the 'difficult to explain' facts on Hinduism. To anyone interested in knowing the basics of Hinduism; DON'T BE WITHOUT THIS BOOK!. This is especially true for all Hindu parents;your children may have already asked,or will be asking the same questions in the near future. Syam Unnithan.

Summary: A life's education in an hour!
Review: Western readers have long needed such a book as this. Pointed and clear, Am I A Hindu is the single best guide for the newcomer to Hinduism in print. Clearly aimed at the lay person, Am I A Hindu explains the most common and often-times vital elements of the Hindu faith without overloading the reader with superfluous commentary and speculation. Intricacies of our daily life are explained and the reader made to understand our way of life, not simply our manner of speaking. I can honestly say that I wish such a consise guide was available when I first began my journey to Truth. A definate "must-read" for any serious seeker or student of world religion

Summary: just what I was looking for!
Review: As the father of a 4 yr old, I have been searching for ways to introduce Hinduism to the young one who will be spending the rest of her life in the US her country. This book has helped in giving a proper East+West focus to explaining the concept of Hinduism. The question answer format between the author and and his young (teenage?)son does a wonderful job of presenting many facts and explanations in a most tender manner. I have recommended this book to others. Ed, wonderful book!

Summary: A beautiful question and answer book on Hinduism.
Review: I am the author of this book and I wrote this book for my own needs. For long time I was looking for a book like this answering every conceivable question about Hinduism in simple questions and answers. I did not see such a book in the market. So I wrote one. I am born in a very orthodox Hindu family and I had studied almost all Hindu scriptures. I also studied [ many times I forced to study] books written by many Hindu saints and books published by theosophical society. Even with all that I have to research more than four years to write this wonderful book. Initially I published the book in 1988 in India spending more than 5000 dollars. After publishing the book I received more than 8000 letters from people around the globe including one from President Clinton and Mr. Walter Issacson, Managing Editor of Time Magazine. On my part I have not accepted even one dime from the sale of copies of my book in India. I had made arrangements to give profits in India to charity. The book is dedi

Summary: A simple, friendly introduction to a fascinating religion.
Review: This is an easy-to-read, wonderful overview of Hinduism. Written in the context of a boy asking his father questions, it is simple and poignant; a wonderful look into a fascinating religion

Summary: Not bad but...
Review: In general, I thought the book was okay, but a few things bothered me:

1) The format of a kid asking the questions which seemed to take the discussion in one direction and ignore others.

2) No index or contents.

3) Topics that make my doubt how credible the rest of the book is. (One example of this is when the author talks of the Mayan indians traveling to India.)

Oh well, it's still an interesting book.
