Rating: Summary: A great Book, no matter how familar you are with judaism Review: I purchased this book, becuase I wanted to become a more religous Jew. It is a great book, telling history, laws, and many customs in detail. I also Highly reccomend "To Pray as a Jew", by the same author.
Rating: Summary: a wonderful handbook Review: If your going to purchase this book I also recommend you check out his other book 'To Pray as a Jew'. Both are excellent resources. I highly reccommend this highly fulfilling read for anyone interested in Judaism and its practices. It is written so that any audience, Jewish or non-Jewish can read it and learn a great deal.

Rating: Summary: A Friend for the Convert Review: In addition to the praises that this book has already received, it is perfect for the non-Jew who is looking for a concise and well-written introduction to Judaism. It not only describes many of the basic practices of Judaism, but also gives excellent commentary on the meaning behind some of the rituals that are foreign to newcomers. This book will introduce you to the beauty of Judaism and lead you to seek further.jimfromkc@hotmail.com
Rating: Summary: Excellent, thorough introduction to Judaism Review: This book is exactly what its title proclaims-a very detailed guide to living as a Jew. I did not find it as reader friendly as "Living Judaism". After reading that title, though, I returned to this book and everything was clearer. I highly recommend it as an excellent addition to any library. It stands on its own merits and is second to none.
Rating: Summary: The Classic! Review: This book is joyous, with a nice balance of technical (e.g. Hebrew text) and well-written English prose. There's a reason this volume is on just about every conversion reading list around. If you enjoyed this, check out his other two books, To Pray as a Jew and To Raise a Jewish Child. Not just "more of the same," they each go off in their own direction and zero in on many of the details of the Jewish life Donin clearly loved so much in his lifetime.
Rating: Summary: a book worth reading Review: This book,by Hayim Ha-Levy Donin, was an in-depth and thorough account about what it meant to be Jewish, the emotional ties its people have to the faith, and so forth. Donin helped to open a once impregnable barrier between two seemingly clashing worlds. An excellent offering.
Rating: Summary: Answers to Questions on Judaism You Never Knew to Ask Review: This is definitely *the* classic work on Orthodox Jewish Law, in plain language. The thing I liked most is that Rabbi Donin tells not only how Jews observe each Mitzvah, but why. He shows that none of HaShem's Commandments were given to Israel arbitrarily; each has something to teach us about HaShem's wisdom.
Rating: Summary: Simply the best of the best!!! Review: This is THE book!!! It has basically everything you want to know about observance - the who, what, when, where, why and how...I have not found another book that even comes close. The book tends to lean on the orthodox side, but includes everyone. I've found that I keep coming back to this book for questions and answers again and again (even 7 years after I bought it!)
Rating: Summary: To Be a Jew Review: This was a very excellent book to read, especially people with limited Jewish knowledge. It skims the whole surface of Judaism, in a way that is quite interesting. R. Donin does a wonderful job with this book!
