Rating: Summary: ENTERTAINING!!! Review: Second Sunday is a witty, and entertaining novel made up of several complexed issues all related to the traditional denominational theme of "Second Sunday". The story is set around the church's original pastor has died, and the deacon board is left with the assignment to select the new pastor before the 100th anniversary of the church. There are several stories told within this novel but they are all related, and it shows that we are never too late to change, and have faith that all things are possible. I didn't think I would enjoy it, but I read it in 3 days, and I found myself laughing throughout the book.

Rating: Summary: Who says that women have no power? Review: Second Sunday is all about the power that women have when we, as women, work together. The men folk of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church are trying to find a new preacher. Unfortunately, the last preacher died shortly before the church's historical centennial anniversary celebration. The deacons found that they had to bale the last pastor out of sticky situations on more than one occasion; let's just say, that the pastor took caring for the members to a whole new level. The women of the church resent the fact that the men are again keeping them out of the process after making such a bad choice with the last preacher. Therefore, they decide to be proactive and devise a plan to "test" each of the candidates, enter the "jaded" woman of the town. Sheba Cochran is a single mother of four, each by different men. She spends Saturday night at the local juke joint and very rarely graces the church doorstep on Sunday morning. Nettie and Viola, sisters and deaconesses of the church, are spiritual enough to still be her friend and not judge her or look down on her because of her past; they can see her for the beautiful person she truly is. It also helps that Nettie figures that Sheba knows men and is "an expert when it comes to sniffing out a man." Katie Mae does not have fond things to say about Sheba, as Sheba is one of the women on her husband's, Cleavon, list of mistresses. The group overrules Katie Mae's objections, for the good of the church, and thus begins the search for a new pastor by the women of Gethsemane. I did not have the pleasure of reading the first book in this series; consequently, I cannot make a comparison. The plot holds few surprises and might be described as "bland"; nevertheless, the book is entertaining and a light read. Leanna R.E.A.L. Reviewers
Rating: Summary: Not as good as Church Folks Review: Second Sunday was not at all what I'd expect. I'd hoped it was a great sequel to Church Folks. It was in noway good as Church Folks. Even though it was funny and quite humors at times. Some of the situations were believable while some were not . Especially the the one about Rev. Wilson and Sheba. I hope I am not being judgemental but I just do not see that situation happening. No I'm not going to tell what happen, but I do not see those two together. To rate this one would be 3* to 3.5* Okay so I can believe all the other situations happening but not the marriage between the Rev. and Sheba with 4 kids by four different men. Okay so I told it. Sheba was only guilty in falling in love with the wrong men which neither meant her any good. I'm glad she did find true love but I would not have believe it would have been with the minister.
Rating: Summary: A Delightful read Review: Second Sunday, displayed exactly what the author set out to show; which is a glimpse at the African American church. Gethesemane Church on it's 100th year of sitting on loaned property is about to experience much of what Paul preaches about in 1 Corinthians. Christians being puffed up, discord amongst the congregation and infidelity. Greed is the driving force of this property being re-claimed by an ancestor of the owner. Redemption and prayer is part of what made this book a page turner. Church Folks her debut, was excellent now with Second Sunday Ms. Bowen has rapidly become one of my top 10. Keep up the good work you have definitely satiated this Christians soul.
Rating: Summary: "A Must Summer Read" Review: Second Sunday, hit home for me in many ways. My church is almost like this one, except the money issue. This story made you want to jump back into time and attend this special church. I loved all the women in the story, and found them to be the most intriguing. The fact that they got their husbands to really think straight about the decisions they were going to make, really stood out. I loved the way Michele wove in different stories about love, marriage, and hope, and referred back to the church. If more people would depend on the Lord, instead of themseleves, they would be very surprised!!! This is one book that I'm recommending for everyone to read. Even my grandmother read it!!! She found it to be hilarious. I thought this book was a lot more realistic than "Church Folks". It just seemed more likely to happen, then pimps as preachers. Not saying there aren't a lot of crooked preachers out there, this just didn't seem realistic. But in Second Sunday, I could best believe most of what happened up in there. I was very impressed. Thanks Michele for a hilarious, and thoughtful read!

Rating: Summary: SECOND SUNDAY SECOND SUNDAY Review: The church folk need a new pastor before their 100th anniversary and during the process of finding a new pastor, we have all the antics you can think of going on in the background. The storyline was very witty and humorous. The characters were great also. I felt that some of the storylines could have been developed more. Maybe that's for the next book ... Overall I enjoyed the read and if you've read "Church Folks",then you know how Michele Andrea Bowen does it !!! The prayers of the righteous availeth much ...

Rating: Summary: I Felt Like I was in "Chutch"!! Review: This book was absolutely wonderful! I enjoyed the exciting characters; their trials & tribulations and sharing their victories in the end. To read & share in their level of faith was like being a part of the story. Told in a humorous & touching way, I felt like I was a member of Gethsemane, fighting right along with them. A very good read. I would truly recommend this; God definitely has a sense of humor!
