Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Nice
Review: This is a very nice little book, beautifully written, that will give you greater insight into the meaning of the Sabbath. Somehow it feels like a light, effortless, fun read while at the same time containing deep philosophical stuff. Very good!

Summary: Five plus and more stars you have
Review: This is positively the best book available for understanding the Judeo-Christian sense of time. Heschel starts with very simple observations e.g. that time/Sabbath was the first of God's creation to be blessed and called holy. From there using Scripture, traditional commentary, and his own wise observations he builds an understanding of the pivotal role Sabbath plays in Jewish life.

The illustrations truly enhance the book - not essential but an indication of the care that has gone into this book.

Summary: Palace on Time
Review: Those wishing to understand the meaning and significance of the Sabbath in the modern life will find an outstanding presentation in this book. Its portrayal of the Sabbath as palace on time stresses the enduring nature of a day created for the sake of human beings.

Summary: Richer in value than rubies, and finer than Egyptian linen
Review: While I have been studying on the topic of the sabbath to find out its meaning for us today, I have found excellent supporting knowledge and facts that Abraham Heschel has eloquently put into words. His teaching comes naturally and his liberated style shows maturity and strength. The humour within is ticklingly enjoyable. I laughed at some of the imaginative illustrations. Although this book has fine lighter moments, it is also very serious and it does not get bogged down in the fluff of many words. Heschel has given a gift to us with this delightful book; he gently enlightens the reader to see what God has set apart for those who truly worship him in spirit and in truth. The Sabbath: its Meaning for Modern Man is worth more than one long, thoughtful and prayerful read. Thanks be to God for this book.
