Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: Rabbi Heschel was one of the 20th century's most profound rabbis. This book here is for anyone who wants to learn not only more about Judaism, but more about themselves. Although written in 1950's, this book rings true more so today than ever. Shabbat is a time for us to take time out of busy lives, to return to our spirituality, our family and to ourselves. This is a must read for every Jewish scholar young and old.

Summary: The book transcends the typical fare related to the Sabbath.
Review: Rabbi Heschel's book transcends the debate over which day is Shabbat, and clearly dilineates what the Sabbath is and how man is to relate to his God by it. The book will revolutionize one's concept of God, Creation (space) and time. The first thing the Creator called "holy" was time: 24 hours of it every week. Heschel's work is a must read for all who would to have a higher understanding of the Lord and how he operates in His creation.

Summary: WOW! This book is rich!
Review: Some books are informative. Others are inspiring. This one is both. It has gems on every page. It's not a how-to guide for how to make Shabbat, but a how-to guide for how to think about the Queen of Days. He uses word imagery and wisdom from the sages to paint pictures on every page. It's the kind of book you can read over and over and get something different.

After checking this book out of the library, I want to buy two copies: one for me and one for our temple's library.

Summary: Good Shabbos
Review: The holy grandson of the Ohev Yisrael( The Lover of Israel, the Apter Rebbe) Heschel was a Hasid in his soul. And in this work his fervent love for Shabbos is felt in every line. He conveys with a beautiful depth of thought the sacred meaning of the one day of the week devoted to sacred tasks alone. He reveals how the whole of our being can be uplifted on this holy day.

Summary: Not for the uninformed Jew
Review: This book is not for beginners, or those who are relearning their heritage. This book is more like a dissertation, and assumes that the reader is somewhat of a Jewish scholar. More advanced for my taste. But it is ver informative, and perhaps one day I will reread it after I have studied Judiasm more thoroughly.

Summary: Timeless: Understanding of an Institution
Review: This book is what breaking concepts down to their basic elements is all about. This is a classic study that lucidates the institution of the Sabbath for all of mankind. Heschel strips all of the burdensome details of adherence from this holy day and makes it accessible to the novice.

This book allows the reader to understand the premise, and hence provides motivation for the adherence of the day as opposed to making it a regimented theology given as a burden to mankind.

The delight of the Sabbath can be grasped in this brief study. Learn it, live it, enjoy it.

Summary: SHORT, WELL-WRITTEN AND MEANINGFUL
Review: This book, focusing on the celebration of the Seventh Day, helps bring a Jewish person who may have wandered back to an appreciation of Jewish practice and belief. The notes add a scholarly touch and the delightful art work adds to the beauty of the book.
