Summary: Very unique approach
Review: This book on Tarot is like no other you will find. It kept me interested as it was not redundant and just casually explaining different card meanings. It explains the symbolism of the cards in depth. And you will find yourself coming away from this book with an understanding of things you never even knew about. If you are a serious student or reader, you definately need this book.

Summary: As good as everyone said it would be, if not better.
Review: This book, more so than any other book I have used has really opened up my eyes to the symbolism and deeper meanings within the Tarot cards. I am amazed by Rachel Pollack's insightful assessment of every single card. This was by far the best choice I could have made for my Tarot library.

Summary: Best tarot book ever
Review: This is the best book on tarot I've ever read. Its only limitation is that it solely discusses Rider Waite and RW based decks, but this isn't enough to detract from the 5 star rating.

I think it's a great book for beginners - it's just not a book you can flick through and get easy meanings from while doing a reading. But it's the book that has taught me the most about tarot, mostly because of the way Pollack explains the conclusions she draws. She goes deeply into the symbolism and background of each card in a way that stays with you for a long time. It's a fabulous, fabulous book.

Summary: Best Tarot Book Ever
Review: This is the best, most intelligent, thoughtful, and interesting tarot book I've ever encountered. If I had to have only one tarot book, without hesitation this would be it. The interpretations of the cards are so dead-on and intelligent--the insight it has provided has made my readings and my meditations on the cards come alive in a way they never had before. It is much more mature and well-written than a lot of books on the subject. It is not flighty or superficially new-agey, nor is it filled with a bunch of obscure occultist ramblings. My tarot bible! It's magnificent.

Summary: Not for the Beginner, but...
Review: This revised and slightly expanded version of two long sadly out-of-print books ("78 Degrees of Wisdom: Major Arcana" and "78 Degrees of Wisdom: Minor Arcana") is a welcome addition to any serious Tarot reader's library.
Although I wouldn't normally recommend this book for the Tarot beginner, I'd recommend it highly to serious students of Tarot wanting to know more about the many different meanings of Tarot cards. Some beginners might find Pollack's usages of the definitions of cards to be more than the superficial ones.

Going far beyond the "This one covers you" school, Pollack gives many different ways to interpret the meanings of Tarot cards, both from a spiritual viewpoint ("What does this card mean to you?") and a metaphysical viewpoint ("What does this card mean to the person you're reading for?"). It also allows for meditation and self-study of Tarot cards.

Although set up like a standard Tarot book, with chapters covering the Major Arcana, the Minor Arcana, and some readings, (including a sample reading or two) Pollack's definitions of the cards goes far beyond the ordinary superficial "Death means something in your life is going through a major change - you are about to stop one thing and start doing another." Each card has a picture - many from the Rider-Waite deck that most Tarot card readers start with, but some from other decks that you may not have seen. Each card has numerous definitions - and even some examples of what that card might mean when in certain placements in a Tarot card reading, both regular and reversed.

I've no other books in my Tarot library that are more heavily thumbed than my old copies of the two "78 Degrees" books, and I was very glad that Pollack has found a publisher willing to not only reprint them, but allow her to revise them and include both books in one volume. Highly recommended for serious students of Tarot.

Summary: Useful book for the student of the Tarot
Review: This was one of the most useful books I've read regarding the subject of divination and Tarot. It takes the classical Rider/Waite deck and analyses it from a pictoral, historical, and a qabbalistic point of view. The progression of 'the tree of life' along the major arcana was incredibly useful to me.

Summary: Required reading for the person serious about tarot
Review: Unlike all the dime-a-dozen "quick meaning" books and "become a reader in a day or less" books, Rachel Pollack's "Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom" is THE book to read when you are ready to know more. If I were allowed only one tarot book on my shelf this would be the one. An excellent work from an author who knows how to communicate effectively and in an entertaining fashion. I would say this book is destined to become a classic tarot tome... but I believe it has already done just that.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Best book on Tarot
Review: What more can I say than has already been said. This has to be the best book on Tarot I have ever read. The only slight quibble I have is that I find the discussion of symbolism and the interpretations for the Minor Arcana to be not quite as perfect as the part on the Major Arcana. However, if you have to have only one book on Tarot this one is it.
